Putting the spotlight on manual handling.

Health & Safety
HF Company Values

At HF, safety is more than just a priority—it’s part of our culture.

Whether you’re an engineer on the road or a member of our office staff, we’re committed to ensuring everyone operates in a safe, healthy, and supportive environment. To uphold this standard, we focus on a core safety topic every month, highlighting its importance and reinforcing best practices across our team. For December, we’re putting the spotlight on manual handling.

Best Practices for Manual Handling

Here are some quick tips to help you stay safe:

  1. Plan Ahead: Assess the task and ensure the path is clear.
  2. Lift Safely: Keep the load close to your body, bend your knees (not your back), and lift with your legs.
  3. Use Assistance: If the load is too heavy or awkward, don’t hesitate to use mechanical aids or ask a colleague for help.
  4. Take Breaks: Avoid overexertion by taking regular breaks, especially when performing repetitive tasks.
  5. Report Hazards: Let your line manager know if you encounter unsafe conditions.

Why Manual Handling Matters

Manual handling is an everyday task for many of us, involving lifting, carrying, pushing or pulling loads. Done improperly, it can lead to serious injuries, particularly to the back, shoulders and joints. That’s why understanding the correct techniques and applying them consistently is vital for everyone at HF.

HF’s Commitment to Manual Handling Safety

We take a proactive approach to safety, ensuring our team is equipped with the knowledge and tools needed to work safely. This month, we’re rolling out resources and reminders to reinforce safe manual handling practices, including:

  • E Learning Training Sessions: Hands-on workshops to demonstrate correct lifting techniques and posture.
  • Toolbox Talks: Guidance on how to use lifting aids, such as trolleys or hoists, to minimise physical strain.
  • Risk Assessments: Encouraging everyone to assess the load, environment, task and each individuals’ capabilities before attempting any manual handling.
  • Open Two Way Communication: Providing platforms for team members to report unsafe conditions or request support.

A Team Effort

At HF, we know that safety isn’t just about policies—it’s about people. By staying vigilant and prioritising manual handling safety, we can ensure everyone goes home healthy and injury-free at the end of each day.

This December, let’s make manual handling a shared responsibility. Together, we can continue to uphold the HF standard for safety excellence.

If you have any questions or suggestions about this month’s safety focus, please don’t hesitate to reach out to the health and safety team.
