A Company Well Connected

World Earth Day 2026

Today marks World Earth Day, a global event that serves as both a celebration of our planet and a serious reminder of the collective responsibility we share to protect it. For 2026, the global theme is “Our Power, Our Planet,” a call to action that focuses on the urgent transition to renewable energy and the power of individual and corporate choices in driving environmental change.

At HF, sustainability is not a new concept or a peripheral “green” initiative. It is a core pillar of our business strategy. As ‘A Company Well Connected’ with a history stretching back over three centuries, we understand better than most that longevity is built on responsibility. To remain leaders in our sectors, we must lead in environmental stewardship.

Lets explore how HF Group is answering the call of World Earth Day through our comprehensive ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) framework, turning high-level goals into measurable, on-site results.

Environmental Responsibility: Decarbonising the HF Infrastructure

The “E” in ESG is often the most visible, and at HF, we have focused our efforts on where we can make the most immediate impact: our own energy consumption and carbon footprint.

Onsite Solar PV Generation

We believe that the most sustainable energy is the energy you generate yourself. This is why we have implemented a robust Solar Photovoltaic (PV) strategy across our office locations. Our Glasgow Head Office now serves as a flagship for this initiative, with extensive solar arrays actively generating renewable electricity to power our daily operations.

By generating power onsite, we reduce our dependency on the national grid and lower our Scope 1 and 2 emissions. These systems are actively monitored to ensure peak performance, and we are continually exploring opportunities to expand this capacity across our regional bases in Edinburgh, Manchester, Belfast, and Aberdeen.

100% REGO-Backed Tariffs

While our goal is to maximise onsite generation, we recognise that the grid remains a necessary component of our 24/7 service model. To ensure our remaining energy use aligns with our values, all grid electricity procured by HF Group is sourced via fully renewable, low-carbon energy tariffs.

These are supported by REGO (Renewable Energy Guarantees of Origin) certificates. This provides our clients and partners with the transparency and assurance that the power behind our services is backed by certified renewable generation sources, such as wind, solar, and hydro.

The Transition to Sustainable Transport

As a national contractor with a manned 24-hour call-out service, transport is a significant part of our operational footprint. Decarbonizing our fleet is one of our most ambitious and critical sustainability goals.

EV Fleet Transition

We have implemented a structured program to transition our company vehicle fleet from traditional diesel engines to Electric Vehicles (EVs). This is an iterative process where EVs are prioritized for all new acquisitions wherever operationally viable.

By analyzing route data, payload requirements, and charging availability, we are successfully integrating electric vans into our Fire & Security, Comms, and Mechanical & Electrical divisions. As battery technology and charging infrastructure continue to improve across the UK, our goal is to move closer to a fully electrified fleet.

Empowering Our People: Salary Sacrifice & Infrastructure

Sustainability at HF Group extends beyond the company fleet. We want to empower our employees to make low-carbon choices in their personal lives as well. To facilitate this, we have introduced an Electric Vehicle Salary Sacrifice Scheme, making EV ownership more accessible for our staff.

To support this transition, we have installed dedicated EV charging infrastructure at all our office locations. This ensures that whether it’s a company van or an employee’s personal car, the “fuel” used is clean, accessible, and supported by our onsite renewable energy.

Operational Sustainability: Efficiency by Design

Sustainability is often found in the details of how a business operates day-to-day. At HF Group, we apply the same “Mechanical & Electrical” expertise we give to our clients to our own facilities.

Energy Monitoring and Building Performance

You cannot manage what you do not measure. We actively monitor energy consumption across our facilities to identify “energy leaks” and opportunities for optimization. This includes:

  • LED Lighting Upgrades: Transitioning all office and warehouse lighting to high-efficiency LED systems with motion sensors.
  • HVAC Optimisation: Ensuring our heating and cooling systems are running at peak efficiency, utilizing the same PPM (Planned Preventative Maintenance) standards we provide to our clients.
  • Resource Efficiency: Moving toward paperless operations through digital project management and e-billing, reducing waste at the source.

Social Value: People and Workplace

The “S” in ESG focuses on the people who make HF Group possible and the communities we serve. A sustainable business must be a diverse, safe, and supportive one.

Investing in the Next Generation

A key part of our social sustainability is our commitment to Apprenticeships. By nurturing young talent and providing them with high-level training in Green Energy, EV infrastructure, and modern electrical standards, we are ensuring that the “skills gap” is bridged with a workforce that understands the importance of sustainability.

Community and Connection

Whether it’s sponsoring local sports teams or our engineers meeting for a friendly game of golf at Ratho, we foster a culture that values well-being and friendship. We believe that a connected team is a resilient team, and resilience is the foundation of long-term sustainability.

Governance and Ethics: The Foundation of Trust

The “G” in ESG ensures that our environmental and social goals are managed with integrity. HF Group maintains the highest standards of governance through:

  • Accreditation and Compliance: Maintaining our MATS, Achilles, and SafeContractor certifications, ensuring we meet the most stringent safety and ethical standards in the industry.
  • Transparent Reporting: Developing processes to track and monitor carbon emissions to provide clear, honest data to our stakeholders.
  • Partnerships: Working with organisations like the ITP to ensure our industry-wide contributions are ethical and forward-thinking.

Looking Ahead: The Path to Net Zero

World Earth Day is a moment to look at the progress we have made, but it is also a time to look at the horizon. HF Group is currently exploring advanced pathways toward Net Zero carbon operations.

We are not just a service provider; we are a partner in the UK’s transition to a greener economy. From installing Air Source Heat Pumps for our clients to generating solar power on our own roofs, every action we take is designed to prove that industrial excellence and environmental responsibility go hand-in-hand.

As we move through 2026 and beyond, HF Group will continue to innovate, adapt, and lead. We are “Well Connected” to our clients, our people, and most importantly, our planet.
