A Company Well Connected

HF Controls at IFAT Munich 2026

Engineering the Future of Global Sustainability

As the industrial world pivots toward a more sustainable, circular economy, the “brains” behind the machinery must evolve. This week, leadership and engineering experts from our Automated Controls Division, HF Controls joined over 120,000 industry professionals at IFAT Munich 2026, the world’s leading trade fair for water, sewage, waste, and raw materials management.

For HF Controls, a world leader in bespoke control panel systems, the visit was more than a networking opportunity; it was a strategic deep dive into the next generation of environmental technology.

The Pulse of Innovation: Why IFAT Matters

Innovation does not happen in a vacuum. While HF Controls has been a cornerstone of the UK’s critical infrastructure since 1996, the rapid pace of change in sectors like recycling and water treatment requires a proactive approach to research and development.

Staying at the cutting edge of control system technology requires more than just internal R&D. It requires getting out there and keeping up to date with the latest developments and technologies that will integrate with our control systems into the next generation of recycling and waste management technologies.

The 2026 event highlighted a significant shift toward climate-adapted water management and advanced circularity. For a company like HF, which specialises in the design, manufacture, and installation of complex electrical control panels, these trends represent the next frontier of bespoke automation.

Bridging the Gap: Bespoke Automation Meets Environmental Science

At the heart of IFAT’s “Green,” “Blue,” and “Orange” stages was a singular theme: Efficiency through Integration. This aligns perfectly with HF’s core mission. We provide a total turnkey service that bridges the gap between high-level architectural strategy and forensic hardware engineering.

As we toured the “Spotlight Areas”, ranging from hydrogen power in the circular economy to the digitalisation of water management, the synergy between HF’s services and the industry’s needs became clear:

  • System Architecture Conception: The success of a modern waste-to-energy plant or a high-capacity water treatment facility depends on its foundation. HF’s ability to design cohesive arrangements that balance high-power distribution with low-power automation is exactly what the next generation of “Smart Cities” requires.
  • Detailed System Hardware Design: Seeing exhibits in action at IFAT allowed our team to visualise how our CAD wiring schematics and component specifications will house the sensors and AI-driven processors of the future.
  • Integration Works (ELV to 33kV): As one of the few UK contractors capable of managing the entire electrical spectrum, HF is uniquely positioned to help municipalities integrate new plant extensions into aging infrastructure—a major topic of discussion at the IFAT “Blue Stage.”

Breathing New Life into Legacy Systems: Plant Life Extension (PLEX)

One of the most pressing challenges discussed at IFAT Munich 2026 was the need for sustainability within existing infrastructure. The “Orange Stage” focused heavily on how the circular economy can be advanced not just by building new plants, but by optimizing what we already have.

This is where HF’s Plant Life Extension (PLEX) services shine. By revitalising legacy systems and integrating modern control intelligence into existing infrastructure, HF helps clients extend operational life by decades. This “Revitalise over Replace” philosophy was a core tenant of the 2026 trade fair, highlighting HF’s role in minimising capital expenditure while maximising asset value for our global partners.

In-House Excellence: From Glasgow to the Global Market

While IFAT is a global stage featuring 3,000 exhibitors from 60 countries, the strength of HF Controls remains rooted in our dedicated Automated Controls Facility in Glasgow. By keeping 100% of our control panel assembly in-house, we eliminate the risks of sub-contracting. This ensures that the innovative ideas we gathered in Munich can be translated into build-ready technical specifications and manufactured under the strictest quality controls back home.

Looking Ahead: A Responsible Future

The visit to IFAT Munich 2026 has provided the HF team with a roadmap for the coming years. From observing live demonstrations of automated sorting systems to participating in “Solution Tours” focused on water-conscious cities, the takeaway was clear: the future is integrated, digital, and green.

As we return home, we bring with us fresh insights into Functional Design Specification (FDS) and new ways to ensure our clients remain at the forefront of their industries. We don’t offer “off-the-shelf” compromises; we deliver precision-engineered systems built on time and on budget.

For our customers in manufacturing, recycling, and beyond, this means total peace of mind. Whether you are a global player or a medium-sized enterprise, HF Controls is ready to provide the “brains” for your most critical infrastructure, ensuring your operations are as efficient, safe, and sustainable as possible.
