At HF, our strength has always been our people. As we continue to expand our footprint across the UK, we are delighted to introduce the latest addition to our senior leadership team: Bruce, our new Head of Operations for the Mechanical Division.
Bruce joins us at an exciting time. With our Mechanical & Electrical divisions working on more and more high-profile projects for healthcare, industrial and commercial clients nationwide, having a steady, experienced hand at the operational helm is vital.
We sat down with Bruce to discuss his journey from construction beginnings to leading multi-skilled teams, and why problem-solving is the “Force” that drives him.
The Q&A: A Focus on Operations
So Bruce, what do you do at HF Mechanical & Electrical? I’m Head of Operations for the Mechanical division. My role oversees our team of mechanical engineers and managers that serve our customers 24/7/365. Having the correct engineers available and by making sure that they are assigned to the right jobs based on skill sets is key to delivering successfully to our customers .
I know it is early days but what are your first impressions of working here? It’s still early days but I have been really impressed with the friendly and busy working environment. HF have five branches and while it will take me a while to get fully bedded in, from everything I have seen, there is great communication and teamwork between all the different divisions of the company.
What does your ideal workday look like? As I work in an operational role and manage an operational team, you always have to be prepared to react as you never know what is around the corner. Customers rely on HF 24/7 and usually when in times of need, the ideal day is one where we can help support our customers with the issues they bring to us and find a solution to allow them to get back on track with minimal disruption.
What led you to this career? I have always been interested in the built environment and have been in the industry since day one of my career. This has evolved over time to focusing on commercial properties and in particular the HVAC and building services side of things. So being here at HF, helping to strengthen and grow the Mechanical side makes complete sense.
What energises you at work? It’s the high-stakes problem-solving inherent in mechanical operations. I’m driven by the challenge of taking a complex, often chaotic set of variables like tight deadlines, design discrepancies, or supply chain bottlenecks and engineering a path forward that keeps the project on track.
There is a unique satisfaction in seeing a theoretical solution become a physical reality. Ultimately, I’m motivated by the fact that in this industry, my solutions have a direct, measurable impact on the bottom line and the safety of our team. I don’t just see a problem as a headache; I see it as an opportunity to sharpen our processes and deliver a better result than what was originally thought possible.
What advice would you give to your teenage self? If I could sit down with my teenage self, I’d tell him that hard work and determination aren’t just tools for success. Talent might get you in the door but it’s the relentless ‘workhorse’ mentality that keeps you in the room when things get difficult. There will be days when it feels like you’re working harder than everyone else and seeing fewer results. Keep going. Hard work doesn’t always pay out daily; it pays out in a lump sum years down the road.
What is something about yourself that you’re most proud of? (Professional or personal) What I am most proud of is the arc of my career and the perspective it has granted me. I started from humble beginnings, entering this industry at the foundational level. Today, I lead large, diverse, and multi-skilled teams within a major organisation, but I have never forgotten the view from the other side.
“A Company Well Connected” Approach to HVAC and Building Services
Bruce’s background in the built environment and his specific focus on HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning) makes him a perfect fit for the HF ethos. In an industry where you never know what is around the corner, his calm, solution-oriented mindset ensures our customers receive the 24/7 support they’ve come to expect from us.
His journey mirrors the path taken by many in our team, including former apprentices who have gone on to lead national organisations, and reinforces our commitment to Social Value and internal career progression.
Leading the Future of Mechanical Services
As Head of Operations, Bruce will be overseeing the diverse, multi-skilled teams that keep our clients’ mechanical infrastructure running smoothly. Whether it’s emergency reactive maintenance or long-term HVAC installations, Bruce’s focus on “minimal disruption” ensures that HF remains a trusted partner for commercial properties nationwide.
Welcome to the team, Bruce! We look forward to seeing the Mechanical division thrive under your operational leadership.
