A Company Well Connected

Let’s talk about Periodic Inspection & Testing

Did you know that the cables and electrical installations that electrical current flows through will age.
It isn’t planned obsolescence, it is simply a fact that electrical wiring, equipment and control gear deteriorate over time.

This means that you should have any electrical installations in a building inspected and tested periodically to make sure that they are in good condition and safe to be used.

Which is why we want to talk about Periodic Inspection and Testing.

What is Periodic Inspection and Testing?

It is, as the name suggests, scheduled inspection and testing of electrical equipment in a building that happens periodically.

It will:

  • Check for any electrical equipment that is overloaded
  • Check for any electrical shock risk and fire hazards
  • Check for defective electrical equipment or wiring
  • Check for earthing and bonding issues

How often is it required?

It differs depending on what the property is used for. For example:

  • A Commercial premises (ie. Pub, Restaurant, Offices…) should be carried out every 5 years.
  • An Industrial premises (ie. Warehouses) should be carried out every 3 years.
  • A residential home owned by the person occupying it should be done every 10 years.
  • A rented home should be done every 5 years.
  • A caravan should be done every 3 years.
  • A swimming pool should be done every 1 year.

Who can carry our Periodic Inspection and Testing?

Periodic Inspection and Testing should only be carried out by registered electricians who can check the condition of electrical equipment against UK standards BS 7671 – Requirement for Electrical Installations (IET Wiring Regulations). As both a NICEIC and a Select Registered Electrical Contractor, we can provide a full range of electrical services, including periodic inspection and testing.

Why is it important?

It may seem obvious but electricity is dangerous. Periodic Inspection and Testing helps to ensure that the electrical equipment and wiring in a building is safe to use. There are around 35 deaths per year and over 4,000 injuries per year in the UK because of electrical issues. In industrial complexes and factories, the electrical demands of manufacturing machinery generates a lot of heat which can cause overheating issues and electrical fires. Having Periodic Inspection & Testing can help reduce electrical shock injuries and cut down on the risk of electrical fires.
