We were proud to have been involved in the successful completion of electrical work for the Larkhall Professional and Businessmen’s Club’s (LPBC) latest community project, in partnership with Larkhall Academy – a crafted stained glass window panel. This project, a tribute to the late Dr. J.F. (Hamish) Smart, a beloved local GP is the result of combined artistic creativity and community spirit, all while helping young students at Larkhall Academy develop invaluable new skills for the future.
The project, originally conceived just before the COVID-19 pandemic, brought together a team of students from Larkhall Academy’s Additional Support Needs (ASN) unit. The goal was to create a stained glass panel in memory of Dr. Smart, whose dedication to the community left a lasting legacy. The initiative received funding support from South Lanarkshire Council’s Renewable Energy Fund, as well as backing from LPBC and Larkhall Academy.
Although the pandemic delayed progress, the project resumed in the 2022-2023 school year with regular classes that taught students the intricate processes involved in stained glass making. These lessons culminated in a stunning NHS-themed design, chosen as a tribute not only to Dr. Smart but to all NHS workers who tirelessly served the community during the difficult days of COVID-19.
We were honoured to contribute to this meaningful initiative by sponsoring and completing the installation of a custom lightbox, which now showcases the beautifully crafted stained glass panel. Our team worked closely with both LPBC and Larkhall Academy to ensure the electrical components were installed to the highest standard, providing the final touch to this exceptional work of art.
The project involved around eight pupils, all of whom gained hands-on experience in the art of stained glass, while also discovering hidden talents and skills. The finished piece is a testament to their hard work and dedication, highlighting community spirit, creativity and the lasting impact of collaboration between local organisations.
In recognition of this, all the students who participated in the project were presented with a special, handmade stained glass medal. Each medal was crafted to symbolise their contribution to the creation of the stained glass panel, serving as a lasting memento of their involvement in this meaningful community initiative. These unique keepsakes were designed to remind the students of their role in honouring Dr. Smart’s legacy and their newly developed skills, which will stay with them long into the future. This thoughtful gesture was a fitting way to celebrate the students’ achievements and the spirit of collaboration that made the project possible.
At HF, we are incredibly grateful for the opportunity to support such a heartfelt project. We extend our sincere thanks to the Larkhall Professional and Businessmen’s Club for their continued trust and collaboration over the years and to the students of Larkhall Academy for their outstanding efforts. This partnership serves as a reminder of the power of community and the importance of fostering the next generation’s potential.
