HF Controls engineered and delivered a bespoke, 6-metre electrical control panel to support a major site expansion at William Grant & Sons’ flagship distillery in Ayrshire. To manage the high thermal load generated by expanded washback fermentation and distillation condensing, the custom automated control system provides centralised automation, power distribution and safety controls for two high-capacity evaporative water cooling towers running alongside active fermentation lines.

In Scotch whisky production, controlling temperature during fermentation is critical. Yeast activity generates significant heat; if temperatures breach optimal thresholds, yeast can stall or produce off-flavours.
As part of a major site expansion at William Grant & Sons’ flagship distillery facility in Ayrshire, HF Controls was commissioned to design, build, and deliver a bespoke electrical control system. The expanded production capability required dedicated thermal management to handle increased load across the distillery’s washbacks (fermenters) and condensing operations.
We engineered a custom 6-metre enclosure housing the complete power distribution, automation, and electrical control systems necessary to manage two high-capacity water cooling towers running in parallel with active fermentation processes.
The two new evaporative cooling towers deliver continuous, temperature-regulated cooling water to heat exchangers on the expanded fermenter line and distillation condensers. The custom HF Controls panel provides the central control interface managing pumps, variable-speed drives (VSDs) and safety interlocks for both towers.
HF Controls delivered a robust, purpose-engineered control panel that enables William Grant & Sons to scale up distillery throughput safely while keeping precise control over fermentation conditions.
