Project Overview

The Euston “Chimney” project stands as a premier example of HF Comms’ ability to solve complex urban infrastructure challenges. By combining high-level RF engineering (ProX5) with innovative architectural concealment, we successfully installed a high-capacity comms tower in one of London’s most sensitive locations.

The project was defined by its Off-Site Fabrication strategy, which allowed for a “factory-to-rooftop” transition of pre-rigged hardware, minimising onsite risk and community disruption. Through the use of RF-transparent GRP materials and a 40m crane operation involving complex road closures, HF Comms delivered a site that satisfies both the technical requirements of the client and the aesthetic requirements of the landlord (BT).

Full Project Details

HF Comms was tasked with the end-to-end delivery of a brand-new communication structure on a high-profile rooftop in Central London. Situated in the immediate vicinity of Euston Station, the project required a delicate balance between high-capacity network requirements and stringent aesthetic “stealth” mandates. At the instruction of the landlord (BT), the tower had to be fully disguised to integrate seamlessly with the historic urban skyline.

Phase 1: RF Modeling & Multi-Skilled Visit (MSV)

Due to the dense footfall of the Euston area, precision in the feasibility stage was paramount.

  • ProX5 Modelling: We utilised ProX5 to conduct a detailed 3D electromagnetic environment analysis. By modelling the Form Factor at maximum theoretical capacity, we ensured the site was future-proofed for high-density 5G traffic while maintaining strict ICNIRP compliance.
  • MSV Strategy: A Multi-Skilled Visit (MSV) was conducted to pinpoint the optimal tower footprint. This survey was critical in identifying the exact lease boundaries for the agreement between the client and BT.
  • ICASE Integration: Technical data confirmed the necessity of a specific vertical height to clear surrounding “urban canyons,” ensuring signal propagation was not obstructed by neighboring London architecture.

Phase 2: Technical De-Risking & Planning

Given the central London location, the surveying phase focused heavily on logistical and legal hurdles:

  • Infrastructure Health: Assessed the structural integrity of the existing roof to ensure it could support the new grillage and steel load.
  • Legal & Estate: Facilitated the complex lease requirements between the client and BT to ensure long-term site tenure.
  • Planning Permissions: Managed the submission for local authority approval, focusing on the “stealth” nature of the design to mitigate concerns regarding the visual impact on the Euston skyline.

Phase 3: Specialised Design & “Stealth” Engineering

Our HF Comms design team proposed an innovative “Chimney” concealment solution.

  • Hybrid Material Construction: The structure featured a robust steel internal frame for stability, but utilised Glass Reinforced Plastic (GRP) for the external cladding.
  • RF Transparency: The use of GRP in the mid-section is technically vital; unlike steel or brick, GRP is RF transparent, allowing signal transmission without interference while maintaining the visual appearance of solid masonry.
  • Off-Site Fabrication: To minimise site time and disruption, the entire tower, including internal antennas, was pre-assembled and “pre-rigged” in a controlled factory environment.

Phase 4: Logistics & Implementation

The build phase required a high degree of coordination with London transport authorities:

  • Road Closures & Crane Lift: A 40m crane was deployed to hoist the pre-fabricated structure, grillage, and Power Supply Unit (PSU). This required meticulously planned road closures in one of London’s busiest districts.
  • The “Single Lift” Strategy: By fitting the antennas in the factory, we were able to lift the complete system in a single operation, significantly reducing the high-risk “Working at Height” duration.
  • Civil Works: Strategic civil works were carried out on the rooftop to install the grillage and ensure the structure was anchored to the building’s core.
  • The Stealth Finish: Once the steel and GRP were secured, the structure was covered in high-fidelity printed brickwork panelling, designed to match the specific colour and texture of the surrounding Victorian-era buildings.

Phase 5: Power & Active Commissioning

  • Power Integration: In a collaborative effort, BT provided the primary power supply. HF Comms engineers managed the final cabling, connecting the PSU to the active hardware arrays within the chimney structure.
  • Active Partner Activation: Once the physical build was verified, the client’s active partners accessed the site to upload software and activate the modules, bringing the new Euston macro-cell live.

Phase 6: Handover & Sustainability

  • Sustainability: Consistent with our core values, all redundant materials and packing crates from the GRP delivery were removed and recycled.
  • Site Restoration: Using “before and after” photography, the rooftop was returned to a clean, “as-was” state, with the new tower completely hidden from public view.
  • The HOP Pack: A full digital Handover Pack (HOP) was delivered, containing all structural certifications, ICNIRP compliance certificates, and as-built drawings.

Key Outcomes

  • Architectural Synergy: Successfully achieved total concealment of a high-power macro site using GRP technology, meeting BT’s “stealth” mandate while maintaining 100% RF transparency.
  • Logistical Precision: Executed a complex 40m crane lift in a high-traffic London transport hub (Euston) with zero disruption to station operations and a perfect safety record during road closures.
  • Off-Site Efficiency: By utilising factory-fitted antenna installation, we reduced on-site assembly time by 60%, significantly lowering the risk profile for our rigging teams.
  • End-to-End Integration: The project flowed seamlessly through our specialised teams, from the initial Multi-Skilled Visit (MSV) and ProX5 modelling to the final Handover Pack (HOP) delivery.
