Advancing Smart Grid Technology

Automated Controls, Information

The electricity network of Great Britain is undergoing a significant transformation as it moves toward Smart Grid status.

This evolution involves modernising control and observation methods to boost efficiency, stability, and sustainability. One of the major challenges in this transition is the increasing integration of renewable and low-carbon generation into predominantly passive distribution networks, where System Operators have limited visibility.

To meet these challenges, Phasor Measurement Unit (PMU) technology has emerged as a crucial innovation. PMUs deliver high-resolution phasor measurements of current and voltage, providing essential data on frequency and the Rate of Change of Frequency (RoCoF) that are vital for maintaining grid stability and performance.

Phasor Measurement Unit (PMU)

A flagship project spearheaded by the University of Strathclyde has taken centre stage in this endeavour, and we are thrilled to announce that one of our apprentices is playing an active role in its success. Liam Duffy, a third-year MEng Electronic and Electrical Engineering student at the University of Strathclyde and an apprentice at HF Controls since 2024, brings with him a keen interest in power electronics and renewable energy solutions. His enthusiasm and technical expertise embody the spirit of innovation that drives both the University and HF Controls in shaping the future of smart grid technology.

Why Is This So Important?

The innovative platform developed in this project displays real-time PMU data alongside operational network data—a feature that has yet to be seen in any Great Britain-focused online monitoring system. The availability of such detailed and publicly accessible PMU data is a rare commodity that promises to become an invaluable asset for academic research and network operators alike. By enhancing grid visibility and facilitating more in-depth analysis, this project lays the groundwork for a more resilient and efficient energy infrastructure.

HF Glasgow Crazy Golf Night Out

Last Friday, members of HF came together for a fantastic night out at Golf Fang in Glasgow. The event provided a great opportunity for colleagues from different divisions to meet up outside of the office, enjoy some laughs, and take part in a few rounds of ‘non-competitive’ crazy golf. With trick shots, banter and a […]
