A Fond Farewell to a Champion of Safety

Career Stories, Health & Safety, Our Latest News

This month marks the end of an era at HF as we bid farewell to one of our most cherished team members, Pat Rafferty.

Pat is retiring after 13 years of dedicated service at HF having been a true ambassador for safety, leadership and the values that HF holds dear.

Over the course of his tenure, Pat has been instrumental in reshaping how we view and practice safety within our company. His role has gone far beyond the traditional expectations of a Health & Safety Manager. He has been a guiding force in establishing safety as a cornerstone of our corporate culture and his relentless efforts in making the workplace safer for each and every team member have had a profound and lasting impact on the company. His contributions will continue to be felt for many years to come.

Redefining Safety at HF

From the very beginning, Pat recognised that safety should never be an afterthought, but rather an integral part of everything we do at HF. His commitment to this cause was unwavering and has resulted in significant improvements in our safety protocols and practices. Whether it was creating more effective safety training programs, improving communication around safety issues, or developing initiatives to ensure better protection on the job, Pat has always taken a proactive approach.

Safety wasn’t just about checking boxes, it was about creating a culture where employees felt safe, valued and supported. It was his belief that if our team members were not only equipped with the right knowledge and tools but also had a sense of ownership and accountability, they would become the biggest advocates for their own safety and the safety of those around them. And that’s exactly what happened.

His influence extended well beyond the formal processes and systems he put in place. Pat had a natural ability to communicate the importance of safety in ways that were both clear and compelling. Few in the Glasgow Branch will forget Pat giving a pep talk to a window cleaner across the road for poor safety practices (working on a job for a completely different business). His approach was personal and relatable and nobody left a conversation with Pat without understanding the ‘why’ behind every safety measure; not just their own well-being but the well-being of their colleagues as well.

Building Strong Foundations for the Future

Pat’s leadership and mentorship have not only shaped our current safety standards but also laid the foundation for the future. Over the past two years, Pat has worked alongside Jonathan Ring, preparing him to take on the role of Health & Safety Manager. This transition was not just about passing the baton; it was about ensuring that the values and practices Pat instilled in HF would continue to thrive long after his departure.

Pat retiring and the future of Health and Safety at HF Jonathan

Jonathan and Pat have worked closely together, sharing ideas, strategies and perhaps most importantly, a shared commitment to safety that has been central to their collaboration. Through this hands-on mentorship, Pat has been able to impart his knowledge and wisdom to Jonathan in a way that ensures HF will remain in capable hands. While Pat’s leadership will be deeply missed, we know that Jonathan will continue the work that Pat started, further enhancing our focus on safety and ensuring that the team remains equipped to face any challenges that come our way.

This passing of knowledge and experience reflects the strength of our organisation. We are not just focused on immediate results, but on creating a sustainable future for HF.

A Legacy of Dedication

Pat’s impact goes far beyond the systems, procedures and policies he developed. It is seen in the improved safety record of the company, the countless lives he has helped protect and the lasting cultural shift he inspired in the workplace. One of the things that truly set Pat apart was his unrelenting perseverance. Safety is his passion, and he has fought for it with a determination that never wavered. Even when safety standards became challenging or required a change in mindset, Pat was there to lead the charge, reminding us all of the ultimate goal: ensuring that every single person at HF could go home to their loved ones at the end of each day.

Of course, it wouldn’t be a true tribute to Pat without acknowledging his sense of humour and warmth. His sweet tooth is legendary within the company and he was a big fan of our Ice Cream Truck Day. His love for a good biscuit has become a bit of a running joke in the office.

A Well-Deserved Rest

As Pat moves on to the next chapter of his life, we are all incredibly happy for him. A passionate gardener in his spare time, Pat will now have the opportunity to enjoy more time in the garden, basking in the summer sun and taking the time to appreciate the things he loves.
Pat’s retirement is not just a personal milestone; it’s a reminder of the long-term impact one individual can have on a company. His legacy will continue to shape HF for many years to come, and as we move forward, we’ll carry with us the lessons he taught us about the importance of safety, leadership and the power of persistence.

While we will miss Pat’s presence, we take comfort in knowing that his influence will remain a driving force behind everything we do. Thank you, Pat, for everything you’ve done to make HF a safer, stronger and more connected team. Enjoy your well-earned retirement, you’ve truly earned it, and we will forever be grateful for the positive, lasting impact you’ve made on all of us.
