Brief Project Description:The Lyceum Theatre in Edinburgh, one of Scotland’s most iconic cultural venues, partnered with HF Fire & Security to upgrade and manage its operational fire and security infrastructure. This comprehensive project involved modernising existing systems, installing new access control solutions, and integrating full security management across the entire site. Now, the Lyceum Theatre, including the Konj Eatery and its administrative offices, benefits from HF’s 24-Hour Manned Call-Out Services, guaranteeing round-the-clock protection and rapid response.
The Royal Lyceum Theatre is a cornerstone of Edinburgh’s performing arts scene, renowned for its historic architecture and vibrant cultural contributions. Hosting a variety of productions throughout the year, the theatre demands robust fire and security systems that ensure the safety of its staff, performers, and patrons.
Given the complexity of the site — which includes a theatre, adjoining restaurant (Konj Eatery), and separate office space across the road — maintaining reliable and integrated fire and security systems is vital to daily operations and overall safety management.
HF Fire & Security was commissioned to take over the existing fire and security systems across all associated premises. The main goals of the project were:
Our team was selected for this project due to HF’s proven track record in managing large-scale, multi-site installations across commercial, hospitality, and entertainment venues throughout the UK.
Before the upgrade process began, HF’s engineers carried out a full inspection of the existing fire and security systems across all three locations — the main theatre, Konj Eatery, and the administrative offices. This initial assessment allowed us to evaluate the current setup, identify any areas of concern, and plan an effective transition strategy that would minimise downtime and disruption to daily operations.
As part of the takeover, our engineers replaced and upgraded the site’s outdated sirens (formerly known as bell boxes) with modern, high-performance models. These sirens not only provide improved sound clarity and reliability but also align with current safety regulations and performance standards.
This upgrade ensures that in the event of an emergency, all occupants can be promptly alerted, and evacuation procedures can be executed safely and efficiently.
At the request of the client, we installed a new access control system at the theatre’s stage door. This upgrade enhances site security, ensuring that only authorised personnel can gain access to backstage and restricted areas.
The new system provides flexible management options, allowing administrators to monitor and adjust access permissions with ease, a vital feature for a venue with varying staff, contractors, and visiting performers.
Given the multi-site nature of the project, HF designed and configured each location’s fire and security system to operate independently.
This approach provides each area with dedicated functionality while still allowing our fire & security team to oversee the full network under our managed service plan.
A key success factor in this project was ensuring a smooth and disruption-free transition from the previous system provider. HF’s experienced team coordinated all works around the theatre’s busy schedule, ensuring safety systems remained fully functional throughout.
Following the completion of the upgrades and installations, we now provide ongoing maintenance and monitoring, guaranteeing optimal system performance. The Lyceum Theatre now has direct access to our Manned 24-Hour Call-Out Services, offering immediate assistance in the event of an alarm, fault, or emergency.
The completion of this project has delivered several important benefits for The Lyceum Theatre and its associated facilities:
Enhanced Fire Safety: Upgraded sirens and independent systems ensure full compliance and faster response times.
Improved Security: The new access control solution strengthens on-site protection, particularly around high-risk backstage areas.
Independent System Management: Each location benefits from tailored control, reducing operational complexity.
24/7 Peace of Mind: HF’s nationwide Manned 24-Hour Call-Out Service provides reliable support whenever it’s needed.
Long-Term Partnership: The Lyceum now has a trusted partner in HF and our team dedicated to maintaining and improving their systems over the years ahead.
