HF Controls supported BEAR Scotland and Transport Scotland in the successful live validation of the automated VEVA traffic diversion barrier system across both the Queensferry Crossing and Forth Road Bridge. Designed to replace an arduous, manually intensive 6-hour diversion process, the automated system executed physical barrier deployment in just 4 minutes and 20 seconds, achieving a complete multi-bridge traffic diversion in a total process time of 19 minutes—without requiring initial direct police intervention. Building on this milestone, HF Controls provides ongoing 24/7 emergency support, proactive maintenance, and technical expertise to guarantee the continuous uptime and operational readiness of this vital, time-saving transport infrastructure asset.

The Forth Estuary forms one of the UK’s most critical transport corridors, anchored by the modern Queensferry Crossing and the adjacent Forth Road Bridge. Managing major incidents, adverse weather, or essential maintenance across these dual spans historically required manual traffic diversions. A process that took up to 6 hours and relied heavily on emergency services.
The automated VEVA Barrier System transformed this workflow by completing a full multi-bridge diversion in just 19 minutes, with the physical barrier deployment executing in 4 minutes and 20 seconds. HF Controls now provides full maintenance, 24/7 technical support, and operational readiness to guarantee total reliability for this critical infrastructure asset.
When severe incidents or weather conditions disrupt traffic on the Queensferry Crossing, traffic must be rerouted onto the Forth Road Bridge. Historically, deploying traditional diversion measures presented major operational hurdles:
To mitigate these risks, Transport Scotland introduced the VEVA Traffic Diversion Barrier System on both northbound and southbound approaches to the estuary crossings.
Following the initial hardware setup by Spie, HF Controls took charge of long-term control system support, operational maintenance, and emergency response capabilities.

A simultaneous live validation test across both the Queensferry Crossing and the Forth Road Bridge verified the performance metrics of the automated system:
| Metric | Historical Baseline | VEVA System (Live Test) | Impact / Saving |
| Physical Barrier Deployment | Manual / Multi-Hour | 4 mins 20 secs | Near-instant lane control |
| Total Traffic Diversion Time | ~6 Hours | 19 Minutes | Up to 5.5 Hours saved |
| Police Intervention Required | Mandatory for initial setup | None required for activation | Operational self-sufficiency |
Maintaining critical infrastructure requires continuous technical oversight. HF Controls ensures system uptime across three operational pillars:
By eliminating up to 5.5 hours of network gridlock during major bridge closures, the VEVA system sets a new standard for transport resilience in Scotland.
