The World Day for Safety and Health at Work is a significant date in our industry calendar. It is a moment to reflect on the global progress made in occupational health and to recommit to the prevention of accidents and diseases. However, at HF, we believe that for a safety culture to be truly effective, it cannot be a once-a-year conversation. It has to be a daily, visible, and unyielding commitment.
While the world stopped to discuss safety on April 28th, for our SHEQ (Safety, Health, Environment, and Quality) Manager, Jonathan Ring, it was “business as usual.”
Leading from the Front
To mark the occasion, Jonathan was doing what he does every week of the year: conducting rounds across our diverse range of project sites.
One of his stops yesterday was at the Scottish Gas Murrayfield Stadium, a venue HF knows intimately. High above the pitch, our electrical teams are currently engaged in a complex project installing new electrical wiring across the stadium roof. Due to the unique architecture and height of the structure, this task requires specialist rope access methods.
We believe that excellence is maintained through consistent oversight. Jonathan’s presence on-site at Murrayfield wasn’t a special event for an international awareness day; it was a routine part of the proactive safety audits he performs year-round.
Why Constant Visibility Matters
In the Mechanical and Electrical sectors, “safety fatigue” can be a real risk on long-term or repetitive projects. By ensuring our SHEQ Manager is “out and about” constantly, we achieve three critical goals:
- Immediate Accountability: Regular, unannounced site visits ensure that our high standards are being met in real-time, every time.
- Cultural Reinforcement: When the team sees leadership on the tools and on the roof, it reinforces the message that safety is not just an office-based policy, it is a core HF value.
- Collaborative Problem Solving: Being on-site allows Jonathan to work directly with our engineers to navigate unexpected challenges, such as the unique rigging requirements at Murrayfield, ensuring that safety solutions are practical as well as compliant.
From Comms Towers to Commercial Fit-Outs
The scope of HF Group’s work is vast. On any given day, we might have teams working on remote telecommunications towers, historic heritage sites or high-end retail fit-outs like Miller & Carter.
Regardless of the scale or the “prestige” of the project, our commitment remains the same and is backed by a SHEQ system that is active, mobile, and constantly evolving.
Well Connected. Well Protected.
As we look past this year’s World Day for Safety and Health at Work, our mission remains clear. We continue to push a workplace culture where every member of the HF family feels empowered to speak up, act safely, and look out for one another.
