Harm-Free in the Workplace

HF Group February Safety News

Our Safety Priority

Harm Free in the Workplace

At HF, safety is always at the core of everything we do. Each month, we spotlight a key safety concern to raise awareness and enhance safety standards across our divisions. For February 2025, we are revisiting and reinforcing the key themes of on-site safety with a continued focus on manual handling, asbestos awareness, and working at height.

Identifying and Mitigating Risks

Effective risk management starts with comprehensive risk assessments. By systematically evaluating job sites and operations, we can proactively identify hazards and implement tailored strategies to mitigate risks. This month, we aim to reinforce the critical importance of keeping safety measures top of mind for all team members.

Manual Handling Safety

Manual handling tasks, such as lifting, carrying, and moving equipment or materials, are routine for many of our teams.

To protect our employees from injuries, we promote:

  • Proper Lifting Techniques: Ensuring that employees know how to lift safely, avoiding twisting or bending during lifting tasks.
  • Use of Mechanical Aids: Encouraging the use of trolleys, hoists, and other mechanical aids to reduce strain.
  • Practical Training: Regular sessions with hands-on demonstrations to reinforce safe manual handling practices.

Asbestos Awareness

Asbestos exposure poses severe health risks, making vigilance in this area crucial. We take a proactive approach by:

  • Strict Protocols: Ensuring all work near potential asbestos-containing materials follows approved procedures.
  • Team Training: Equipping team members to identify asbestos hazards and respond appropriately.
  • Protective Measures: Reinforcing the use of PPE and containment strategies to minimise exposure risks.
  • Toolbox Talks: Regular sessions to refresh knowledge and maintain awareness of best practices.

Working at Height Safety

Falls from height remain one of the most significant risks in our industry. We can mitigate this with:

  • Specialised Training: Providing comprehensive training on fall protection, ladder usage, and scaffold safety.
  • Fall Prevention Systems: Ensuring appropriate systems and equipment are in place before commencing work.
  • Ongoing Risk Assessments: Conducting assessments to address site-specific challenges and ensure proper precautions.

Commitment to Continuous Improvement

Our approach to safety goes beyond campaigns—it’s a continuous journey as we continually illustrate with our ISO45001 Accreditation. Regular toolbox talks foster open discussions about safety concerns and encourage sharing of best practices. Training programs are constantly reviewed and updated to meet evolving safety standards.

Additionally, we want to ensure that all team members have access to necessary PPE, from hard hats and safety glasses to harnesses and respirators, and provide guidance on their correct use. If you need new PPE or training on how to use them, do not be afraid to contact our health & safety team.

Empowering Our Team

We believe a well-informed and equipped workforce is the strongest defence against workplace incidents. By focusing on the specific risks of manual handling, asbestos exposure and working at height, we empower our team to take charge of their safety.

Together, we strive for a harm-free workplace where everyone returns home safe and well at the end of each day. Let’s continue to work together, stay vigilant, and uphold our shared commitment to safety excellence and make 2025 our safest year yet!
