A Company Well Connected

Can I charge an electric vehicle with a regular plug outlet?

With a growing list of benefits, longer range and a greater range of options on the market, electric vehicles are becoming a popular alternative to fossil fuelled cars on the road. But with such a new technology, there is understandably some questions that potential buyers may have about charging an electric vehicle after so many years of simply filling up at the pumps.

Can I charge my EV at home?

Yes you can. If you have a driveway, garage or parking slot with permission to install an Electric Vehicle Charging Point then the easiest way to charge an EV is at home. You can also use the traditional three-pin socket to charge your vehicle.

How fast does an EV charge with a 3-pin socket

Your plugs at home are deemed as ‘slow chargers’. It can take around 30 hours to fully charge a modern electric car from empty to full using a 3-pin plug. Most car manufacturers recommend a three-pin socket method of charging as the last resort.

How can I connect my car to a 3-pin plug?

Whether you run a cable through an open window (which can create a security risk for your home) or you install a dedicated weatherproof socket outside, a 3-pin plug option is the cheapest way to charge an EV.

If you are renting a property or do not have access to private parking to install an EV charing point then 3-pin sockets may be your only option. However adding a correctly fitted charging point to your home can add value to the property.
