The Importance of Automatic Opening Vent (AOV) Hatches in Fire Protection

Fire & Security, Information

What Are Automatic Opening Vent (AOV) Hatches?

Automatic Opening Vent (AOV) hatches are essential safety devices designed to release smoke and heat from a building in the event of a fire. These hatches automatically open when triggered by fire alarm systems or heat and smoke sensors, creating a clear route for smoke to escape.

By doing so, AOVs:

  • Help maintain breathable air and visibility in escape routes such as stairwells and corridors.
  • Reduce smoke spread, making it easier for occupants to evacuate safely.
  • Improve conditions for firefighters entering the building.

How Do AOV Systems Work?

An AOV system integrates with a building’s fire detection and alarm system. When smoke or heat is detected, the system automatically signals the AOV hatch to open. Depending on the design, AOVs may open via electric actuators, pneumatic systems, or thermal triggers.

These vents are typically installed on roofs, stairwells, and atrium ceilings, where they can most effectively draw rising smoke out of the building.

Why Are AOVs So Important?

In a fire, time is everything. Effective smoke control can make the difference between a safe evacuation and a dangerous situation. A properly maintained and compliant AOV system ensures that:

  • Escape routes remain clear of smoke.
  • Structural damage caused by excessive heat is minimised.
  • The building meets the latest fire safety regulations, such as EN 12101, which governs smoke and heat control systems in the UK and Europe.

Regular inspections, maintenance, and testing of AOV systems are essential to ensure reliability in an emergency.

Why the R-410A Phase-Out Demands a Business-Critical HVAC Upgrade

The UK’s commitment to net-zero carbon emissions is driving a seismic shift across all industries, and for businesses that rely on stable climate control, the moment to act is now. The cornerstone of this change in the built environment is the impending ban on high-Global Warming Potential (GWP) refrigerants, most notably the widely-used R-410A. Effective […]
