Brief Project Description: HF was commissioned by Mitchell & Butler to convert an underutilised first-floor area at their O’Neill’s pub in the heart of Glasgow into a new, exciting darts venue called Arrow Smiths. The new venue was to feature six “Oche” (dart lanes), and the project required a full electrical and mechanical overhaul to bring the space up to standard for the new facility.

Electrical Scope of Work

The electricians at HF were tasked with ensuring that the venue’s electrical infrastructure supported the unique demands of a modern darts space. Key aspects of the electrical work included:
• Mains Power Installation: HF electricians ran new mains power to the first floor, ensuring a safe and reliable power supply to the entire space.
• Mains Distribution Board & Mode Tiger Panel: To manage the new lighting system, we installed a new mains distribution board and a Mode Tiger panel, which allowed for control over the venue’s dimmer lighting system. This feature was essential for setting the right mood and atmosphere for both players and spectators.
• Cabling & Power Sockets: The team installed new cabling throughout the venue, ensuring that all dart lanes (Oche) were properly powered. Additional power sockets were fitted to accommodate electronic devices and other equipment.
• LED Lighting Installation: We also upgraded the lighting throughout the venue, fitting energy-efficient LED lights. As you can see from the photos, the new venue features quite a lot of new lighting fixtures, enhancing the overall experience for customers.

Mechanical Scope of Work

Our mechanical engineers were responsible for upgrading and repositioning several of the venue’s heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems to ensure a comfortable and climate-controlled environment for patrons and staff.
• Heating System Upgrade: The site’s existing heating system was upgraded with new radiators, improving the energy efficiency and performance of the system, ensuring the venue was warm and welcoming, even in colder Glasgow months.
• Ventilation System: A new ventilation system was installed to ensure good air quality and the removal of any lingering smoke or humidity, which can be important in busy, high-energy environments.
• Air Conditioning Repositioning: The existing air conditioning units were repositioned to better serve the new layout of the venue, ensuring optimal cooling during warm months.

Fire & Security Scope of Work

Our Fire & Security team played a vital role in the project by making fire alarm alterations to comply with building control requirements. These modifications ensured the venue met all necessary safety standards while integrating seamlessly with the updated design.

Project Challenges: One of the primary challenges of this project was working within the constraints of a heritage building. The team had to carefully navigate existing infrastructure while ensuring that all new installations were compliant with safety regulations and the specific requirements of the new darts venue. HF’s experience with complex installations allowed the team to quickly adapt and resolve challenges in a timely and cost-effective manner.

The Arrow Smiths darts venue at O’Neill’s is now a state-of-the-art facility offering a unique and entertaining experience for visitors. With the work completed on time and within budget, the venue boasts a reliable electrical system, an upgraded HVAC system and an inviting atmosphere, making it a popular destination for darts enthusiasts and pub-goers alike.
HF’s expertise in mechanical and electrical installations as well as fire & security work, combined with our commitment to safety and quality, ensured the success of the project. The team’s collaborative approach and attention to detail working alongside Hugh Stirling Ltd Shopfitters resulted in a seamless transformation of the venue, showcasing HF’s ability to deliver complex projects with precision and excellence. The new venues interior design was brought to life by Spatialized. Their innovative approach turned the derelict space into an engaging and visually stunning venue.
