A Company Well Connected
Our Green Energy team were called to Callander, near Stirling, to upgrade existing EV charging infrastructure by replacing a faulty wall-mounted charger with a brand-new Connected Kerbs dual Gecko charging system. The project involved transitioning from a wall-mounted charger to a ground-mounted system, which required more than a straightforward equipment replacement. Specialist civil works were undertaken to install new ducting and a mounting box to support the dual Gecko units. During these works, an unexpected concrete pad—believed to be from a former structure—was discovered beneath the surface. This obstruction prevented the installation of a conventional TT earthing solution, presenting a technical challenge on site.
Our experienced Green Energy electricians identified and implemented a safe and compliant workaround by installing a Matt:E auto-reset PME device. This system continuously monitors the supply and automatically disconnects power to the EV chargers in the event of a fault, restoring supply once conditions return to normal. This solution ensured the installation met all safety requirements without compromising the project timeline.
Our Green Energy team were called out to Callander, near Stirling to replace a faulty wall mounted EV charger with a brand new Connected Kerbs dual Gecko charger system. As more and more drivers switch to Electric Vehicles, ensuring that the UK charging network is not just expanding but being well maintained is of vital importance. Connected Kerbs ‘Gecko’ EV charging system is designed to fit into the existing architecture of the streets of towns and cities like Callander with minimal visual impact while delivering vital charging points for the ever expanding number of electric vehicles on our roads.
Project Challenges: Going from a wall mounted EV charging system to a ground mounted charging system is more than just simply unscrewing one device and installing another. Civils contractors were required to provide ducting for the new ground mounted unit and for the installation of the Mounting Box that the new dual mount chargers would be fitted to.
When the work began to install the ducting and mounting box, a previous concrete pad for an older building that may have been in the position was discovered. This impeded the ability to get an earth rod or ConduDisc in place to provide a TT earth.
Our specialist Green Energy Electricians managed to find a suitable ‘work around’ solution to this by install a Matt:E auto-reset PME device. This device, when it detects a supply fault, will immediately cut off the supply to the EV charger. When it detects the fault has cleared, it automatically resets.
There is a growing wave of support for electric vehicles in both the commercial and consumer sectors that is currently exceeding the electric vehicle charging network. There is a great demand for charging stations across the country that needs to be met. And with various eco and Government grants available, there has never been a better time to have electric vehicle charging stations fitted.
