The Drum & Monkey

The Drum & Monkey is one of Glasgow’s most iconic pubs, housed in a building with rich architectural history. HF was commissioned to perform a full-scale infrastructure modernisation across our Electrical, Mechanical, and Fire & Security divisions.

The project presented significant challenges, most notably the discovery of asbestos surrounding legacy electrical installations. These components were so aged they were believed to be part of the building’s original electrical fit-out. Navigating these hazards while working within a historic, high-traffic city centre venue required meticulous planning, specialised handling, and a commitment to preserving the building’s aesthetic integrity.

The Solution: A Triple-Threat Integrated Approach

1. Electrical: 18th Edition Excellence & Atmosphere

Our electrical team replaced the outdated legacy systems with a robust, modern infrastructure.

• Safety & Compliance: We stripped out the old installations and performed a partial rewire, including new distribution boards and sockets, bringing the entire premises up to 18th Edition IET Wiring Regulations.
• Lighting Design: To enhance the venue’s famous atmosphere, we installed a new lighting scheme featuring a Dimmable Tiger Panel System. This allows the staff to precisely control the “mood” of the pub throughout the day and evening.
• Back of House: We also fully modernised the lighting and power for all staff and kitchen areas to ensure operational efficiency.

2. Fire & Security: Non-Invasive Protection

Protecting a historic building requires a delicate touch. The existing conventional fire alarm was no longer fit for purpose.

• Hybrid Addressable System: HF Fire & Security designed and installed a fully addressable hybrid system.
• Preserving the Fabric: By utilising a mix of wired and wireless devices, we were able to provide 100% coverage without the need for invasive cabling that would have damaged historic fixtures, ornate ceilings, or original wood panelling. This ensures the building is protected by 21st-century technology without losing its 19th-century soul.

3. Mechanical: Modernising the Guest Experience

To bring the venue up to modern hospitality standards, our mechanical team focused on a high-spec upgrade of the facilities.

• Sanitary ware Upgrade: We supplied and fitted new bathroom sinks and sanitary ware throughout the premises, ensuring the guest facilities match the premium quality of the rest of the venue.

The Results: A Safe, Efficient, and Historic Success

The Drum & Monkey project showcases HF’s ability to manage high-risk materials and historic constraints while delivering a completely modern M&E package.

• Heritage First: Through the use of wireless fire technology and sensitive lighting placement, the pub’s historic character remains untouched.
• Risk Managed: The safe removal of asbestos and the replacement of original electrical components has eliminated significant fire and health risks.
• User Control: The new Tiger Panel lighting system provides the client with a level of environmental control they never previously had.

Working on the Drum & Monkey required a deep respect for Glasgow’s architectural history. By integrating our Fire, Electrical, and Mechanical teams, we were able to solve complex safety issues like asbestos while ensuring the pub is now one of the safest and most energy-efficient historic venues in the city.
