HF were commissioned to upgrade the existing floodlighting system at Eyemouth High School, replacing outdated and inefficient pitch-side floodlights with modern, energy-efficient LED lighting. The existing system relied on older technology that consumed high levels of energy and offered limited flexibility in how the pitches could be illuminated.
As part of the upgrade, our team removed the old floodlighting units and installed new high-performance LED fittings designed to deliver improved light quality, greater reliability, and significantly reduced energy consumption. In addition to the lighting replacement, HF implemented a new lighting control system that allows the school’s grounds manager to operate the floodlights with far greater flexibility. The new controls enable individual pitch selection or full-site activation, providing a major improvement over the previous system, which required all floodlights across the three-pitch area to be switched on regardless of actual usage.
This enhanced level of control represents a significant step forward in energy conservation for the school. By only illuminating the pitches in use, Eyemouth High School can now reduce unnecessary energy consumption and achieve further savings on running costs—an especially important benefit given rising energy prices and increased usage during the darker winter months.
The project was completed within the specified timeframe despite the challenges of working in a live school environment. The pitches are in near-constant use throughout the day by pupils and are also hired out for after-school activities, meaning access windows were limited. Drawing on our extensive experience working on live sites, HF carefully planned and delivered the works to ensure the pitches remained safe, accessible, and fully operational throughout the upgrade.
The completed installation provides Eyemouth High School with a modern, efficient, and flexible floodlighting system that improves lighting performance while delivering long-term energy and cost savings, supporting both educational and community sporting activities.
HF were called in to upgrade the existing floodlighting system for Eyemouth High School . The work required removing the existing pitch side floodlights which were old and inefficient, and replacing them with new energy efficient LED units.
As part of the lighting upgrade, we set up a lighting control system that allows the Schools ground manager to control the floodlights and activate them all or select each pitch lighting individually. This is a massive step forwards in energy conservation for the School as previously, all of the floodlights had to be turned on across the entire three pitch space, regardless of whether only one of the pitches was being used. The new system will allow them to save even more on their energy bills because of this feature.
There are many advantages for commercial, retail and industrial business sectors when upgrading to LED lighting from inefficient halogen and compact fluorescent lamps (CFL). These range from cost to the quality of light emitted and even the lifespan of the lights.
We were successfully able to complete the lighting upgrades in the specified time and with the increasing energy costs across the UK, the School will nwo benefit from more efficient lighting, with more customisation and reduced energy costs – just in time for the darker winter months ahead.
Project Challenges: Because the School pitches are under near constant use, our available access to the pitches to complete the upgrade work was limited. With the outdoor space is used throughout the day by the school as well as for after school hires meaning there were few available time slots to complete the work. At HF however, we have vast experience of working in live sites are were able to safely complete our work without hindering the usual day to day sports activities.
This was imperative for the School who stipulated that the pitches had to remain open and safe for use by their pupils.
