With such a rich history in the UK electrical field, HF occupies an unprecedented position in industry. A huge part of this success has always been through our apprentice programme. We are incredibly proud of this apprentice programme which has seen so many of our young apprentices successfully continue their career into full time positions within the company, either as Electricians, Mechanical Contractors or as one of our Fire & Security team.
One of our current apprentices working in our Electrical division is Morgan, who was one of the winners of the Apprentice of the Year award at Glasgow Clyde College in 2022. We sat down with Morgan to find out more about life as an apprentice at HF and why she chose to begin a career as an electrician.
I first applied for an electrical apprenticeship as its a great opportunity to gain high quality training and valuable skills. Teamwork, communication and problem solving experience which you can’t get in the classroom. It is all from being out onsite. My goal is to become an Electrician and being an apprentice involves a lot of learning on the job and is very hands on. I like this aspect of the job as I’ve always been more of a practical learner.
Becoming an apprentice also intrigued me as a lot of females historically don’t go into this type of work and I thought it would be fulfilling and lead to a great career.
I choose a career in electrical because the electrical industry as a whole is in very high demand and always will be. With new gadgets and technology, the demands for electrical installations is only going to grow and with the government’s plans to become net zero, that is only going to speed things up. Due to the electrical industry evolving with endless possibilities of what can be invented in the further makes it an exiting time to be a part of the industry and be involved in all the amazing opportunities that come with it.
I did the pre-app course in Cardonald/Glasgow Clyde College where they recommended HF as a company to apply for because they have always held apprentices in such high regard. I looked at the many different types of work they carry out and found it very interesting at the range of what they do. It’s a family run business with an outstanding reputation and is local to where I live. One of the main reasons I wanted to work for HF was that they have a good ethos of equal opportunities.
There is so much I enjoy about being an electrical apprentice. Working hands on within practical tasks, the variety of tasks I get to carry out and the variety from day to day all helps to further advance my skills and knowledge in the electrical trade. There is many role models within HF and College who demand high standards of me and this pushes me to try my hardest in every task I’m faced with as I know it’s expected of me. I also enjoy working with the different people at the company as this improves my social skills. I take pride in the fact that I’m more independent as I’m earning for my self thus being able to do the things I enjoy.
My future goal as it stands is to become an fully qualified electrician by finishing my apprenticeship and passing my trade test and which will then hopefully lead to a job with HF. I also want to gain as much opportunities and knowledge as possible by taking up many courses such as the testing and inspection 2391 and EV charging.
Thank you Morgan

In the business world, electrical failures can become a serious issue that can grind day to day operations to a halt.
Electrical Testing and Inspection is designed to eliminate the risk of electrical hazards and minimise potential downtime while helping to spot any developing issues before they become big problems. But what is Electrical Testing?
The main purpose of electrical testing is to ensure that all the electrical appliances, wiring and installations in a business are functioning to their full capacity and will continue to run trouble free. Electrical testing can help prevent office downtime, production problems and actually cut costs for a business should there be problems that you don’t know about; all while helping to save lives.
Electrical testing is carried out both for commercial and residential properties but it is in the business sector where it is most important and more frequently called upon. Injuries caused by electrical failures are dangerous, can cause injuries to members of staff or customers and the business owner is the one liable. Regular testing and PAT testing are required by law as some of the most important requirements of the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 and are applied to business owners, landlords and their tenants.
Electrical periodic inspection will:
Electrical testing benefits include:
While it is required by law, issues with electrical appliances can develop throughout the year and may require a call out for reactive repairs. The most common warning signs of faulty electrical wiring and electrical machinery are:
It differs depending on whether you are a home owner or a swimming pool. A swimming pool (as an example) needs to have electrical testing completed once per year. A domestic home should have electrical testing completed every 10 years (or after a change of tenant. )
At HF Electrical, we provide Periodic Inspection and Testing services across the UK. All our testing and inspection services are offered with required certification for fixed wiring in line with our NICEIC regulations.
We can offer electrical inspection and testing services for:
To find out more about our electrical periodic inspection and testing and for a full range of electrical tests available to your commercial business or domestic home, please contact us on 0800 783 9480.
Whether it be electricians, gas engineers, comms designers….at HF, we are immensely proud of the loyalty that we have managed to foster within the company as we always strive to put the people who work for HF first. After all, we are at our strongest and most effective when we respect, value and collaborate together as one team.
So today, we get to celebrate yet another work anniversary as Frank Rafferty, one of our Electrical Contracts Managers at HF Mechanical & Electrical hits 20 years working at HF. To commemorate this, we sat down with Frank to ask him some questions about his time at HF and what it means to him.
Summer holidays, Christmas holidays, Easter….only kidding. My favourite thing working here has been the variety in what I get to do. It keeps things fresh and interesting, especially over twenty years. Getting to work on different jobs and at different sites, all with their own unique challenges and obstacles to overcome has kept me on my toes throughout my career at HF and long may that continue.
My biggest accomplishment has been getting to where I am right now. I started out here as an apprentice (so technically I have now been at HF for 21 years though only as a full time employee for 20 of those years) and working my way up from an Electrician to an Approved Electrician and now to a Contracts Manager has been something I am vey proud of. When I started out, it was just a job but it has become a career and I am very thankful for that.
It’s two things really. Independence and Trust. With the work that we get to do at HF, there is very little in the way of obstructing hand holding. The bosses trust us to get the job done and that gives us a lot of independence and freedom to do the job properly without distraction. Obviously we have to deliver and that brings with its own pressure. HF have a very high standard and always have done so we need to ensure that we constantly meet those high standards with every project we work on.
In my time here, the jobs that we have worked on have become bigger and the responsibility on HF has been steadily increasing. And you can see the dynamic shift that this has created within the HF team on site. It has created a stronger work ethic and actually helped strengthen the collaboration between members of HF in the different divisions. For example, we have been working on a large job in Liverpool recently that includes electrical, fire & security and automated controls work. We are responsible for the full job and the collaboration between what we need to do in Electrical and how that works alongside Fire & Security and the Control System work HF Controls are doing has never been stronger.
Listen to your tradesman and have a good work ethic. When I was an apprentice, I turned up on time, I paid attention to what I was being told and I put in the hours. Not every day is a good day but with the variation in what I get to do and the scale of jobs I get to work in, it has all been worth it. The early days as an apprentice and an electrician can be tough. There is a lot to learn but if you are looking for a rewarding career then I would highly recommend it.
Thanks Frank
Faced with today’s business challenges – recessions, pandemics, takeovers and mergers, the family ethos behind HF and the family continuity at management level which is rarely seen is just a part of our recipe for success. Employees working at HF get to work across a variety of business sectors in exciting, ground-breaking projects. A big congratulations to one of our electrical apprentices in our Manchester branch Kiegen who has just passed him AM2 Trade Test and can now become a qualified Electrician having worked as an Apprentice for HF over the last 4 years.
Last year, our Manchester branch celebrated 20 years since it first opened and newly qualified electricians such as Kiegen will continue to help HF to strengthen our electrical services in this region. Our Manchester branch, like those in Edinburgh, Belfast and Aberdeen provides domestic and commercial customers with Electrical, Mechanical and Fire & Security services ranging from electrical installations all the way to next generation biometric security systems.
At HF, we are the first choice for some of the country’s leading businesses when it comes to electrical services. But for some businesses, things never stopped. And one of those companies was HF. With our Manned 24 hour Call-out Service, we provide electrical, mechanical and fire & security call out services for customers nationwide three hundred and sixty five days a year!
So while the majority of the country was taking time off over Christmas, our team have been hard at work ensuring that businesses in retail, the hospitality sector, manufacturing, leisure etc can keep working through the busy Christmas period. And while it would take too long to list all of the jobs that we have been working on over the holidays, we wanted to share a few examples of the kind of services that we have been carrying out as part of a vital service for so many businesses that depend on electricity, plumbing, heating and ventilation during the holiday season.
A well know restaurant chain in its Glasgow location had a serious issue in the build up to Christmas. The interlock panel in their kitchen area activated and shut off the gas supply! And no gas means no cooking which is a fairly important part of a restaurants business model. Our emergency call out team were on site ASAP and had the issue fixed within one hour of the call coming in. This meant that the restaurant suffered minimal disruption during one of their busiest times of the year.
A popular bar in Livingston was alarmed to find that one of their hand dryers in the toilets had begun sparking. This posed a serious risk to life and our emergency call out team were able to quickly get to the job and make safe the electrical device while a new one was ordered and fitted in at the beginning of the year.
The main control panel for the extractor fan in a fast food restaurants kitchen area had developed a fault meaning that the kitchen could not turn on the extractor fan. Our electricians were on site and fixed the issue within an hour of the call.
When a freezer looses power, it can become a big problem for the restaurant as they could loose the food stock currently in the freezer. That was exactly what happened for a take away restaurant in Glasgow’s City Centre but thankfully, HF were there to help. Our repair team had the issue fixed within one hour of arrival and we are delighted to say that there was no loss of stock for the restaurant.
With the amount of sub zero days and nights causing issues with domestic and commercial properties this winter, our Mechanical team have been working flat out 24/7 helping customers with burst pipes caused by the freeze. With the temperatures in Scotland having frequently gone below zero over Christmas, there has been a lot more frozen pipes and burst pipes that in recent years meaning our plumbing team have been working very hard.
We can provide our clients across the UK with the peace of mind that our trained, qualified and certified engineers are always only ever a phone call away from fixing your electrical, mechanical or fire & security issue. And when we mean 24 hours service. We really mean it. No matter the time of day, month of the year, HF is always on standby.
If you would like to know more about our Manned 24 hour Call-out Service, where we cover and the services we can offer, please contact us. With branches nationwide and the opportunity to tap into a wide range of varied services and associated consultants with a skills base and command of technologies which are second to none. Working with HF Group is more than just another service contractor.

Christmas may only come once a year but the timing of our recent apprentice competition means that for Glasgow based electrical apprentice Kyle Sinclair, he has managed to bag a fairly mighty early Christmas present from HF thanks to the recent Health & Safety competition that we ran for all of our apprentices.
AT HF, Health & Safety is incredibly important to us and we ensure that all of our apprentices are fully versed in the various health & safety processes and procedures when working on jobs for domestic and commercial clients.
Kyle was the winner of our health & safety competition and is now the proud owner of a brand new DeWALT power drill.
We are incredibly proud of our apprentice programme at HF which has seen so many of our young apprentices successfully continue their career into full time positions within the company, either as Electricians, Mechanical Contractors are as one of our Fire & Security team.
Kyle is one of our current apprentices working in our Electrical division and when he collected his new power drill, we sat down with him to find out more about life as an apprentice at HF and why he chose to begin a career as an electrician.
I first applied for the apprenticeship programme through recommendation from a friend who had previously found a job in the Pre-apprenticeship program offered at Glasgow Clyde College. He said this would be the best first step in the industry and a way to separate myself from other candidates aspiring to become an apprentice. He always seemed to enjoy his work and I could see the development he had made in his roles so I knew this would be the right challenge for myself.
A few close friends of mine had made the decision to go down the electrical route after school while I went to college to study business. After achieving my HND in this sector I felt it wasn’t quite suited to me and wanted to widen my horizons. The electrical industry then began to interest me more than any other in construction and seeing the development of knowledge and skills my friends had made in just a few years of something they didn’t have any experience in before only made me want to follow that path and progress as far as I could giving the right opportunities.
HF is one of the top electrical contractors in the country so being selected by them for an interview from the pre-apprenticeship programme was a great feeling. Knowing I was up against other tough candidates with similar knowledge to myself only made me want to try my best at the interview to prove why I stood out to them. I had already heard from close friends in the industry how large the company was and the different areas they worked in so I felt it would be the right fit for myself to improve my experience in this industry.
Having just passed my FICA exam last month I can only look back and say that I thoroughly enjoyed the last few years as an apprentice at HF. Some days were challenging but I can honestly say I’m thrilled with the good friends I have made here and the experience I have gained on the many different types of job I have been able to work in.
In the future I hope to keep growing my knowledge and experience as an electrician in any possible way I can and to improve on my future career opportunities. I will always be looking out for the next chance to show my skills and strengths and hope to one day be designing my own jobs.
And it is far from an exaggeration to say that we could not have done it without the people who have worked for us over the years. As a family run company we have so many fantastic examples of employee loyalty and success within the company with many members of the family having hit some very impressive milestones at HF.
And today we are delighted to add yet another name to that list as Eric Bowie (no relation to David) hits the milestone of THIRTY FIVE YEARS as a member of HF.
Eric is our Financial Controller and is heavily involved in tracking invoices, handling salaries and so much more.
To mark hitting such an impressive anniversary, we wanted to ask Eric some questions about his time at the company and the things that have changed over the last three and a half decades here.
HF has come a long way since I first started working here. Many people forget that HF was not the same large company that it is today. When I first started working here in 1987 it was a lot smaller, we only had one van in the Glasgow branch. Now we have well over one hundred.
Being a part of the company as it has gone through so much change and growth has been something of immense pride for me. But my absolute favourite moment was when we first hit the £6 million barrier.
Breaking that marker was a big thing back then and being part of it and sharing the excitement when it happened was great. Now of course, the company has grown so much with our Telecommunications division HF Comms and Automated Controls Divisions HF Controls that it makes that number seem somewhat smaller. These days we are closer to the £40 million mark but back then, it was a big deal and I was part of it.
Surviving 35 years!!! In all seriousness, it is the growth of the business and being a part of that. Of the 300+ people who currently work at HF, more than half of them were born AFTER I started working here. I have been able to work with so many fantastic people in my time here and helping the company to grow in the way it has has been a big accomplishment and source of pride for me.
It is the challenge of handling all the numbers and variables that come with a company that has so many divisions and services. The tagline ‘A Company Well Connected’ sometimes doesn’t do justice to how much we can do. When a project has been completed that uses Electrical, Mechanical and Fire & Security services, being part of the solution to ironing out all the variables and processing the numbers is incredibly satisfying and is something that never gets old for me.
There are understandably different groups within the office so I liaise with the people around me and those in a similar role, and together, we have always had great humour in the office. Collectively, whether it is electricians, mechanical engineers, comms designers etc, there is a total understanding amongst everyone about the job at hand and how to work together to get things done. Not every project is straight forward and when things do go wrong on a project, watching everyone band together to deliver the result is something impressive to see.
Technology has changed the landscape so much over the years and as good as the software is, technology can fail you. So having real world, hands on experience is crucial.
When I first started here, the way we processed payments simply doesn’t exist anymore but having the experience of the entire process and not being afraid to get stuck in and help others has stood me in good stead when technology has let us down. It is something I would always advise others to thing about. If the technologoy stopped working for just a day, how would you be able to do your job and could you do it?
Thanks Eric
Faced with today’s business challenges – recessions, pandemics, takeovers and mergers, the family ethos behind HF and the family continuity at management level which is rarely seen is just a part of our recipe for success. The likes of Eric and their experience, skill and loyalty are big parts of the HF success story and long may that recipe continue.

Apprentice hourly rates differs depending on what stage of apprentice they are currently at. Once qualified, Electricians and Plumbers are some of the highest paid trades in the UK.
We have so many success stories within HF; from the almost endless number of electrical apprentices who have forged successful, long spanning careers with us, to those who have moved from one division of HF to another as they grow and seek new challenges.
At HF, we consider all of our employees as part of the family and invaluable assets to our business. We continually invest in training and development programmes, allowing the entire team to share in a thriving and mutually supportive working environment.
The name HF Group occupies an unprecedented position in industry across the UK and a huge part of our success has always been through our apprentice programme. We are incredibly proud of this apprentice programme which has seen so many of our young apprentices successfully continue their career into full time positions within the company, either as Electricians, Mechanical Contractors are as one of our Fire & Security team.
One of our current apprentices working in our Electrical division is Gary, who earlier this year won the Apprentice of the Year award at Glasgow Clyde College. We sat down with Gary to find out more about life as an apprentice at HF and why he chose to begin a career as an electrician.
I was directed towards HF through Glasgow Clyde College and their pre-apprentice programme. This got me an interview with HF and I was lucky enough to became one of their current apprentice electricians while studying at the College.
I have a few family members who already work in the construction sector. They urged me to pursue a career in the construction sector, feeling I would be well suited to it. It was for this reason that I originally applied to an engineering course straight out of school. However I didn’t feel I had the practical experience to succeed in the construction sector just yet so I applied for an electrical apprenticeship in order to gain the valuable experience I felt I needed to succeed in the future.
When researching the best electrical contractors in Scotland, I heard about HF. I quickly realised that they were a very successful and diverse company with many divisions such as electrical, fire and security, commas and controls. And for me, that opened up so many possibilities for my career going forwards. Knowing this, I felt that HF would be the best fit for me as they could give me a broad knowledge base in order to help me towards my future goals.
I feel that one of the best parts of my work is the people that I work alongside. There are so many talented tradespeople at HF to learn from and the other apprentices in the HF Group are always incredibly helpful if I have any questions. I like the fact that everyone helps one another for the overall good of the project.
I hope to gain as much experience as possible in my apprenticeship in order to leave me options for my future career choices. I have not yet settled on a definitive goal for my future but I do wish to progress in the construction industry in some fashion and hope to one day be off of the tools and working on designing installations.
The name HF occupies an unprecedented position in industry across the UK. We have diversified and developed abreast of industry advancements and have grown into a group of world-class companies leading the way in next-generation technologies; and all with a family continuity at management level which is rarely seen. We are always looking for quality, talented and enthusiastic new members to our team and apprentices form a vital part of the services that we offer and the quality that we can provide to our customers.
If you are interested in apprentice programmes in Electrical, Mechanical or Fire & Security services, use the link below to find out more about the current opportunities in areas near our branches in Glasgow, Edinburgh, Manchester, Belfast and Aberdeen.

For those who watched the game on TV and for those that were lucky (or unlucky depending on how you look at it) enough to be there, you may just have seen the HF logo a bit more prominently during the Scotland vs Australia game at Murryfield.
Scotland hosted Australia in the first of the 2022 Autumn Nations Series and while the home nation came agonisingly close to a victory, it was still great to see the HF branding prominently lighting up the digital advertising boards during the game.
As ‘A Company Well Connected’, adverts like this allow us to tell the audience about the full range of companies within the HF brand. From the Mechanical and Electrical services we offer under HF Mechanical & Electrical Ltd to the work we do in 5G Telecommunications within HF Comms Ltd.
But the animated banner was not the only HF participation at the game. Our Fire & Security team from HF Fire & Security Ltd were also on hand as live support for the game. Our Fire & Security team provide the standby support for a number of sporting events and similar hospitality venues in the UK as part of the wider commercial fire and security services that they provide.
If you would like to know more about the live standby services that we provide at HF, please contact us.
But renewable, clean energy solutions have been in use for decades. Solar panels for example were first patented in the 1880’s! Hydro electric power is another popular source of renewable energy that has been in use for decades with the likes of the Hoover Dam (where construction first began in 1931) producing hydro electric power year after year for multiple states across the pond.
Another hydro electric scheme a little closer to home is that of Knoydart in Scotland. A project that we were directly involved in nearly 50 years ago in 1976.
The hydro electric dam itself has been in the news recently as one of the many articles related to the cost of living crisis that is currently hitting the UK. The article on the BBC website highlights that, due to its location, Knoydart is completely off the national grid and relies on all its power directly from the local hydro electric dam. As one of the most rugged and remote locations in the UK, Knoydart draws its power from Loch Bhraomisaig, generating around 280kW for the residents and businesses in the area meaning that the whole area is able to run its own electricity rates and it not governed by the national grid prices.
HF’s involvement in the project nearly 50 years ago focused purely on electrical installation work and revolved around the mains and distribution set up for the area. We ran nearly 3km worth of electrical cable linking the various distribution boards for each house with the main powerlines linking to the hydro electric dam. As with all the work we do, there were challenges in the project ranging from weather to access. After all, this was nearly half a century ago and access to Knoydart was even more difficult back then than it is now.
While it is nice to look back at green energy electrical services that we have worked on in the past, we are more focused than ever on the green energy projects of the future. From EV Charger Fittings to Solar PV installations, energy efficiency reports and battery storage systems. Through our range of Green Energy Services, we are offering our customers a bright way forward for energy solutions in your business or home.
Leading the charge towards a more sustainable and efficient future from one of the oldest and most highly regarded electrical services contractors in the UK.
The name HF occupies an unprecedented position in industry across the UK. We have diversified and developed abreast of industry advancements and have grown into a group of world-class companies leading the way in next-generation technologies; and all with a family continuity at management level which is rarely seen.
With senior-level hands-on management from initial planning to final handover, and with the opportunity to tap into a wide range of varied services and associated consultants with a skills base and command of technologies which are second to none. Working with HF is more than just another service contractor.
As with any new technology, there is much to discover for businesses in the UK over the potential applications, benefits and money saving benefits of green energy. With offices across the UK, we can offer our green energy services across Scotland, England and Northern Ireland and are happy to discuss the full range of exciting services that we can offer your business as we all move towards a greener future.
Mental health problems can affect lives, families, workplaces and communities yet are too often dismissed or ignored rather than treated or talked about. World Mental Health Day wants people to recognise that mental health should be treated just like physical health for the benefit of both the individuals who are suffering from mental health issues and for society as a whole.
At HF, we consider all of our employees as part of the family and invaluable assets to our ongoing success. So we continually look at ways to invest in training and development, allowing the entire team to share in a thriving and mutually supportive working environment. One of the most important things we can invest in is the mental health of our employees and one of the ways we do this is through something called Perkbox.
Perkbox is just one of the additional benefits and perks that we offer our employees and gives members access to thousands of deals and discounts, loads of no cost benefits, wellbeing content and much more.
All members of the HF family get free membership to a Perbox Subscription and one of the services it provides is something called the ‘Employee Assistance Programme’. This is a direct telephone line that puts them through to qualified therapists and gives them access to a wealth of information on mental health and wellbeing issues.
Powered by Health Assured, this completely free programme includes a team of qualified therapists on hand to offer support with a range of emotional, legal and financial issues – 24/7. Completely confidential, 365 days a year.
While Perkbox is a great asset for our employees to use, we also have long term staff within HF who have taken Mental Health Training Courses so that whether employees want to turn to a friendly face or, should they feel more comfortable, turn to a confidential programme and phone service like Perbox, we have options that will suit them.
World Mental Health Day is a chance for you to talk about your own mental health or to discuss it in general and raise awareness. If you are struggling, there is always someone to talk to. If you are concerned that you are developing a mental health problem, visit The Mental Health Foundation ‘Get Help’ page using the link below…

Some solutions to reducing energy costs involve large investments in the likes of solar panels while others require cuts to existing consumption by reducing the use or temperature settings of things like air conditioning in the office.
At HF, we are able to offer a number of solutions to help businesses reduce their energy consumption including energy reports and water conservation reports and today, we want to talk about Lighting Surveys.
A Lighting Survey is exactly as it sounds. We conduct a site survey of your existing lighting set up, review your current expenditure on lighting and provide solutions to reduce this expenditure. One of the easiest solutions to reduce your lighting energy consumption is to switch to LED lighting.
Switching to LED lighting has always been a no brainer in our eyes. The benefits of LED lighting go beyond just the cost saving of making the switch and can deliver an almost instant return on your investment. LED lighting is one of the best ways for businesses to lower their energy consumption and therefore their energy costs so if you are currently still using conventional spotlights, halogen bulbs or fluorescent lighting in your commercial premises, we can help you save a lot of money on your energy bills.
As an example, we have recently completed a lighting report for a customer in Edinburgh. Their existing annual kWh usage is 25,000 which has been costing them in the region of £34,000 per year. By switching to LED lighting, their estimated kWh usage will drop from 25,000 to just 9,000. This means that they will go from spending around £34,000 per year on electricity to just £12,500!!!
You do not have to be very good at maths to see the significant saving that upgrading to LED lighting can have for your business. And while there is an initial cost to switching to LED lighting, the financial savings means that they will pay for themselves incredibly quickly. All while lowering your electricity usage and helping your business save money in the months and years ahead.
There are many advantages for commercial, retail and industrial business sectors when upgrading to LED lighting from inefficient halogen and compact fluorescent lamps (CFL) including:
Energy efficiency in lighting solutions are looked at in two ways. Luminous efficacy and useful lumens. This describes the amount of light emitted per unit of power (watts) by the light source. Upgrading to LED lighting can result in 65% or more improvement in energy efficiency of your business facilities lighting. If you are currently using outdated and energy inefficient lighting, this energy saving can be even more.
The components of an LED light and the way that they generate light means that they have a far greater lifespan than other forms of light source. A traditional light bulbs filament weakens over time before eventually burning out – LEDs don’t burn out. An LED’s bulb produces low heat levels, is durable and energy efficient which makes it realistically possible to outlast other light bulb types by thousands of hours.
Because LED lighting is capable of emitting such a high level of brightness, it can offer increase lighting power over halogen meaning that not only does it require less power to turn on an LED light. You actually need less LED lights to achieve the same room lighting. Which can save you even more in running costs.
It is well known that older lighting solutions gave off more heat than light energy. LED lights are able to operate at a significantly lower temperature and what little heat they do give off is actually dissipated in a special heat sink. And because LEDs do not emit infrared radiation, they are ideal for lighting heat sensitive areas such is in food production facilities, Museums and medical facilities.
LED lighting is a far more reliable lighting option. Not just because of the increased lighting hours that they provide but because they can operate in colder temperatures (ideal for walk in freezers) and are more durable to impact and vibrations because they have no filament or fragile parts they are a more reliable option for busy commercial and industrial facilities that need reliable lighting solutions through all hours of the day.
LED lighting has a strong Colour Rendering Index (CRI) which is a measurement of lights ability to reveal the colours of objects compared to an ideal light source aka natural light from the sun. LED lighting with a high CRI makes them an ideal solution for night time security lighting where they can illuminate more objects in a surrounding area thanks to a higher CRI.
LED lighting can be bunched into a unit to replace larger bulbs or be arranged in isolation in smaller devices. They can be strung out in a sequence and come in a wide range of colours. In fact, LEDs are available in a wide range of Correlated Colour Temperature (CCT) values ranging from Cool to warm, yellow, white light and so much more. This design freedom means that they can be used to great effect by interior designers, retail stores, museums and so much more.
While CFLs take a few moments to warm up and an incandescent bulb works by heating a filament to a temperature that produces light, LEDs are instantaneous and operate at full brightness the moment you flip the switch.
These are difficult times for businesses as costs of energy and materials continue to increase. But however you look at it, LED lighting offers considerable benefits to businesses as a way of reducing energy bills and maintenance requirements whilst offering a well lit, safe working environment.

The event is a combination of the regional winners brought together for an event where the national winner is crowned in one of nine different award categories.
We are this year’s ‘Subcontractor of the Year – £100k – £500k package value’ winners through the work we have done for Morgan Sindall in Electrical, Mechanical and Fire & Security work across the country.
This award comes directly from Morgan Sindall who we have worked closely with on multiple projects. They have recognised the quality of work and service that we have provided on large-scale jobs across the country.
“Few Main Contractors look after their sub-contractors in the way that Morgan Sindal does. To be nominated at their awards ceremony in various categories was kudos in itself, but winning on one of them, lets me know our team is continually delivering expectation.”
John A Ferguson – HF Mechanical & Electrical Director
As ‘A Company Well Connected’, we have always put service and quality at the front of what we do. With senior-level hands-on management from initial planning to final handover, and with the opportunity to tap into a wide range of varied services and a skills base which are second to none, awards like this are important to us as they highlight the work that we have done while demonstrating what we can do for others.

We consider all of our employees as part of the family and invaluable assets to our ongoing success. So we continually invest in training and development, allowing the entire team to share in a thriving and mutually supportive working environment. The benefit to us? Excellent staff retention and length of service rates. And to clients like Morgan Sindall? The reassurance of the best possible service, throughout every aspect of your communications with us.
And that, it turns out, is why we are their award-winning subcontractor of the year for 2022.

IP (Ingress Protection) Ratings are used to demonstrate the protection and resistance to intrusion of both solids and liquids for electrical components.
An electrical enclosure will usually have an IP number rating that refers to the specific rating for the solid and water rating of the component. The first number references solid matter while the second number defines the protection level against various forms of moisture/liquid build up. Together, this IP rating will demonstrate the effective protection that the electrical enclosure can offer and therefore where the device is suitable for use.
The first digit in the IP rating represents solids. There are seven ratings numbered 0 – 6. Where an X is displayed, this represents that the device has not been tested for solid ingress protection.
Offers no protection.
Protection against solid objects greater than 50mm in size. (Protection from a large part of the body such as a hand)
Protection against solid objects greater than 12.5mm in size. (Protection against fingers or other similarly sized objects)
Protection against solid objects greater than 2.5mm. (Protection from many commonly used tools)
Protection against solid objects greater than 1mm. (Protection from from objects such as wire, nails, paperclips etc.)
Offers limited protection against dust to ensure that it does not interfere with vital equipment.
Complete protection from dust.
The second number rating is for water ingress protection. This is rated in eleven stages beginning with 0 and ending with 9k. Electrical components with an X represents that the device has not been tested for water ingress protection.
Offers no protection.
Protection against vertically falling water droplets (Such as condensation run off).
Protection against vertically falling droplets tilted at 15 degrees (Such as light rain).
Protection against spraying water at an angle up to 60 degrees (Such as heavy rain).
Protection from water splashes coming from all angles.
Protection against low level intensity jets of water.
Protection against high level intensity jets of water.
Protection against immersion in water for short periods (up to 30 minutes) no deeper than 1 metre.
Protection against immersion in water for long periods under high pressure.
Protection from close-range, high intensity/high temperature jets of water (Commonly seen in road vehicle use).
An example of a complete IP rating would be (for example) IP67. In this situation, the IP rating tells us the the electrical enclosure is both dust tight and can offer protection from submersion under water anywhere up to a metre deep for up to 30 minutes.
When a manufacturer of electrical enclosures require an IP rating, they must have the device tested by an independent and certified company to assign a numerical IP rating to the product. Having this IP rating means that they can confidently state the products capability and offer assurance that the product meets the end user needs.
In electrical installations, IP ratings are vitally important for the safe protection of users from electrical shock while protecting vital assets from water or dust damage. By having an IP rating, our team (and our customers) are fully aware of the protective measures that are in place to ensure the safe use of electrical devices on sites ranging from food production facilities to outdoor carparks, harbours and even residential garden spaces.
Additionally, the user of electrical equipment that has an IP rating is fully aware of its protective capabilities so they can work safely and with reduced risk of injury.
Providing Manned 24 hour Call-out Service nationwide, we are the first choice for some of the country’s leading businesses when it comes to electrical services. From Electrical Installations to Planned Maintenance Contracts, quality service and peace of mind are the principles on which the Fulton family founded the company and its electrical services all those years ago, and it’s just as important today. Which is why IP Ratings are so important in the work that we do. As a group of world-class companies leading the way in next-generation technologies, we work in a hugely diverse range of industries and sectors, all of which require varying levels of protection from solid and water elements. Having IP ratings ensures that we know what can and should be installed for the safety and protection of our customers and their assets.
