We remain committed to advancing our sustainability agenda, driving innovation, and setting new benchmarks for corporate excellence in Glasgow and beyond.
You may never have head of CompEx trained electricians but they form a vital part of the electrical services that we offer our customers in certain sectors. In the intricate world of electrical services, there are what you will know as ‘standard’ electricians and those trained for hazardous environments, commonly known as CompEx (Competence in Explosive Atmospheres) trained electricians. The environments they navigate and the specialised skills they possess set them apart significantly. Delving into these differences is crucial for understanding the unique capabilities each brings to the table.
Electricians are skilled professionals responsible for installing, maintaining, and repairing electrical systems across residential, commercial, and industrial settings. Their expertise encompasses a broad spectrum of tasks, from wiring buildings and installing fixtures to diagnosing and resolving electrical faults.
CompEx Trained Electricians specialise in working in hazardous environments where explosive atmospheres pose significant risks. Industries such as oil and gas, chemical processing, and mining demand the expertise of CompEx trained professionals due to the inherent dangers associated with their operational environments.
Our CompEx trained electricians possess comprehensive knowledge of explosive atmospheres and the potential risks posed by electrical equipment. They understand ignition sources and the precautions necessary to mitigate explosion hazards.
Our Compex electricians training extends beyond standard electrical work to include specialised techniques and protocols for working safely in hazardous areas. This includes selecting, installing, and maintaining electrical equipment certified for use in explosive atmospheres.
CompEx training culminates in certification that demonstrates competence in navigating hazardous environments. This certification is often mandated by regulatory bodies and employers in industries where such risks are prevalent.
While standard electricians operate in conventional settings, our CompEx trained electricians are equipped to handle the unique challenges of hazardous areas where the risk of explosion exists.
CompEx trained electricians possess specialised knowledge and skills tailored to hazardous environments and the industries requiring CompEx trained electricians often have stringent regulatory mandates governing the installation and maintenance of electrical equipment in hazardous areas, necessitating specialised expertise and certification.
Both traditional electricians and CompEx trained electricians play pivotal roles at HF and ensure the safe and efficient operation of electrical systems for our clients. CompEx trained professionals bring specialised knowledge crucial for navigating hazardous environments and are just one more reason why HF has become so highly regarded as an electrical contractor. We are NICEIC and Select Approved Electrical Contractors providing Manned electrical 24 hour Call-out Service nationwide and are the first choice for some of the country’s leading businesses when it comes to electrical services.
We can provide our electrical contract services for domestic and commercial customers across the UK. With branches in Glasgow, Edinburgh, Manchester, Belfast and Aberdeen, we can work in:
With an approach which combines traditional values with innovative thinking, we know that for our customers, a faulty light switch requires the same level of service and professionalism as a multi-million pound electrical installation project.
In the dynamic and ever-evolving field of electrical contracting, apprentices play a pivotal role in driving success and sustainability. These individuals, often at the onset of their careers, bring enthusiasm, fresh perspectives, and a willingness to learn that is invaluable to both our electrical team, as established contractors and the industry as a whole. As it is National Apprentice Week, we wanted to delve into the importance of apprentices to our business and explore the myriad ways in which they contribute to the growth and prosperity of HF Mechanical & Electrical.
Apprenticeships serve as the cornerstone for building a skilled and knowledgeable workforce in the electrical contracting industry. By providing hands-on training, mentorship, and real-world experience, apprenticeships equip individuals with the technical expertise and proficiency required to excel in their roles. As they progress through their apprenticeship programs, apprentices gain a comprehensive understanding of electrical systems, safety protocols, and industry best practices, laying the foundation for a successful career in the field. With our apprentices, we are able to help educate them on proper health & safety and the right way to install, maintain and test electrical equipment.
In an industry where technological advancements and regulatory changes are constant, the demand for skilled electrical professionals remains high. Apprenticeships allow us to cultivate a pipeline of talent to meet these evolving demands effectively. By investing in apprenticeship programs, we can ensure a steady supply of qualified workers equipped to tackle the complexities of modern electrical projects, from commercial installations to renewable energy initiatives.
The influx of apprentices brings fresh perspectives and innovative ideas. Young apprentices, often well-versed in emerging technologies and digital tools, contribute to the integration of innovative solutions and practices within the workplace. Their enthusiasm for learning and experimentation encourages our electricians to embrace new technologies and adopt more efficient workflows, ultimately enhancing productivity with the work that we do for our clients.
Safety is paramount in the electrical contracting industry, where even minor errors can have severe consequences. Apprenticeships instill a strong culture of safety from the outset, emphasising the importance of adhering to safety protocols and standards in every aspect of the job. Under the guidance of experienced mentors at HF, apprentices learn to identify and mitigate potential hazards, promoting a safe working environment for themselves and their colleagues. This focus on safety not only protects personnel and property but also helps us maintain compliance with regulatory requirements.
As experienced electricians retire and the demand for electrical services continues to grow, the industry faces significant workforce challenges. Apprenticeships offer a strategic solution to this dilemma by providing a structured pathway for individuals to enter the profession and develop the necessary skills. By nurturing talent through apprenticeship programs, we can address workforce shortages, reduce recruitment costs, and secure the future sustainability of their businesses.
In the dynamic landscape of electrical contracting, apprenticeships play a vital role in shaping the workforce of tomorrow and driving the success of our business today. By investing in apprentices, we not only address immediate skill needs but also cultivate a culture of learning, innovation, and safety within our business. As the industry continues to evolve, the contributions of apprentices will remain indispensable to HF.
If you are looking for more than just a job, we can help you create a long lasting career as an electrician. One that promises unique challenges, a varied workload and great career progression opportunities within the company. We are always looking for enthusiastic
and motivated individuals to join us with benefits including:
We have so many success stories within HF; from the almost endless number of electrical apprentices who have forged successful, long spanning careers with us, to those who have moved from one division of HF to another as they grow and seek new challenges.
At HF, we consider all of our employees as part of the family and invaluable assets to our business. We continually invest in training and development programmes, allowing the entire team to share in a thriving and mutually supportive working environment.
At HF Comms, as a leading player in the communication technology industry, we take this commitment to the next level with our Annual Awards program. This ceremony serves as a platform to celebrate the hard work, dedication, and exceptional contributions of our employees throughout the year.

The awards were handed our during our annual Safety Day at Haggs Castle in Glasgow where the entire Comms team met for another successful day of safety training.
Employee recognition is a vital aspect of maintaining a motivated and engaged workforce. It not only boosts individual morale but also enhances overall team spirit and productivity. The HF Comms Annual Awards not only acknowledge outstanding achievements but also reinforce the company’s values and commitment to fostering a culture of excellence.
At HF Comms, we understand that a culture of recognition is fundamental to attracting and retaining top talent. By publicly acknowledging and rewarding exceptional performance, the company fosters a positive and supportive work environment. This culture of appreciation not only motivates current employees but also sets a benchmark for excellence that inspires new hires.
Through this program, we not only honour individual excellence but also reinforce a culture that values innovation, collaboration, and leadership. As the company continues to thrive in the competitive communication technology sector, our Annual Awards program remains a cornerstone of our success, fostering a workforce that is inspired, motivated, and committed to delivering excellence.
At HF, we put people first. We are at our strongest and most effective when we respect, value and collaborate together. That is one of our core values and that family culture means much more to us than dates and numbers. It is quite literally the core of our business.
But there are times when dates and numbers do matter and today is one of them. Because 30 years ago today, Melanie Higgs first walked through the doors of HF and became a part of the family.
Having joined HF originally in a role that was supposed to be as an Admin Assistant, Mel was strangely only in this role for two weeks before her skills were quickly recognised as being far more beneficial elsewhere within the company. So within a fortnight of joining HF, she had already graduated to become our Stores Assistant in the Glasgow branch. This of course was the same year that HF Controls Ltd was formed and the HF brand was at the beginning of an exciting spell of growth that would soon see more expansion and new companies and branches form across the UK.
Mel quickly cemented herself as an invaluable member of the team and within a few years, when our existing stores manager left, it was an easy decision to promote her into the vacant position to become our new Stores Manager.
In 2005, the next big step in Melanie’s HF career came when she was asked to take on the role of Admin Manager for the Glasgow office. After being with us for 11 years, Mel was finally working in the office that she originally thought she would be in when she joined us in 1994. Within two years of starting in this new position, HF Group Ltd was formed to allow the individual companies within HF to continue to trade under their own identity. Mechanical and Fire & Security Divisions had already started as part of HF Electrical Ltd which meant that her role as Admin Manager dealt with not just what was happening with HF Electrical Ltd but also that of HF Controls Ltd and HF Comms Ltd (which was created in 1999).
As the HF Group grew and developed, it became clear that we needed to have our own inhouse HR position to better manage the sheer number of people working for HF. Having been so heavily involved in the management of our office and on-site engineers, handling everything from payroll to ensuring compliance with labour laws and regulations, it was a no brainer for Mel to graduate once more to become our first ever HR Manager. Within less than a year of starting in the new position however, she had the unenviable task of having to deal with the sheer chaos of Covid-19, furlough schemes and remote working.
Managing well over 300 people working in branches nationwide, Mel’s importance to the company is not limited to her role as HR Manager. She is also a member of our Social Committee and helps to organise office events, charity fundraising days, nights out and even competitions for our engineers across the UK. And when there is an event being run, you can bet that Mel will be right in the thick of it. For so many people within the company, Mel means a lot.
So you can see why, on this occasion, dates and numbers are important for us. Melanie is a vital part of our ongoing success at HF and is a great example of yet another individual who has joined the HF family and turned a job into a career that has now spanned three decades. She has been with us through so many of our biggest successes and as we continue to grow, we look forward to her being a part of so many more still to come.
We have always made the promise to those that join the HF family that working for us is a lot more than just a job, it is a career. And Mel is another perfect example of this. Someone who first started out as an Admin Assistant, grew and advanced with the company, embracing unique challenges, a varied workload and great career progression opportunities to become our HR Manager. It isn’t always easy and there is necessary training required along the way, but we always ensure we give our team every opportunity we can to grow with us.
As a collection of individual companies all operating under the HF brand, we are always looking for enthusiastic and motivated individuals who want to take the next step in their career with a solid foundation and real scope to grow in the company.
If you would like to know more about what it is like to work at HF and our current career opportunities within the company, please click here
We want to say a massive congratulations to Melanie for hitting thirty years as part of the HF family and a huge thank you for everything you do for us day in, day out.
In the fast-evolving landscape of technology and industry, the advancement of electrical testing equipment has played a pivotal role in ensuring the safety, reliability, and efficiency of electrical systems. As an electrical contractor with such a rich and long serving history, we have used all manner of electrical testing from the early days of basic test meters to today’s sophisticated testing instruments.
The roots of electrical testing can be traced back to the late 19th century when the pioneers of electricity, such as Thomas Edison and Nikola Tesla, were laying the foundation for modern electrical systems. Basic testing tools like voltmeters and ammeters were employed to measure voltage and current. However, as electrical systems became more complex, the need for advanced testing equipment became evident.
Test meters have been a staple in every electrician’s toolkit, providing a versatile solution for measuring voltage, current, and resistance. Over the years, test meters have evolved significantly. Modern digital test meters (DMMs) have replaced their analogue counterparts, offering enhanced accuracy, readability, and additional features such as capacitance and frequency measurement. Some high-end models even come with wireless connectivity for data logging and remote monitoring.
As electrical systems became more sensitive to variations in power quality, the demand for sophisticated testing tools grew. Power quality analysers emerged as a solution to diagnose and troubleshoot issues related to voltage sags, harmonics, and transient disturbances. These analysers can capture and analyse data over time, providing valuable insights into the overall health of a power system.
Oscilloscopes have long been used for visualising electrical waveforms. With the advent of digital technology, digital oscilloscopes have become indispensable tools for diagnosing complex electrical issues. High-speed sampling rates, deep memory, and advanced triggering options make these oscilloscopes capable of capturing and analysing intricate signal patterns in real-time.
The constant evolution of electrical testing equipment has undoubtedly transformed the way our electricians diagnose, analyse, and maintain electrical systems. These advancements not only improve the accuracy and efficiency of testing procedures but also contribute to the overall safety and reliability of electrical installations. As technology continues to advance, it is certain that electrical testing equipment will play a crucial role in adapting to the ever-changing demands of the modern electrical landscape.
In the business world, electrical failures can become a serious issue that can grind day to day operations to a halt.
Electrical Testing and Inspection is designed to eliminate the risk of electrical hazards and minimise potential downtime while helping to spot any developing issues before they become big problems.
The main purpose of electrical testing is to ensure that all the electrical appliances, wiring and installations in a business are functioning to their full capacity and will continue to run trouble free. Electrical testing can help prevent office downtime, production problems and actually cut costs for a business should there be problems that you don’t know about; all while helping to save lives.
Electrical testing is carried out both for commercial and residential properties but it is in the business sector where it is most important and more frequently called upon. Injuries caused by electrical failures are dangerous, can cause injuries to members of staff or customers and the business owner is the one liable. Regular testing and PAT testing are required by law as some of the most important requirements of the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 and are applied to business owners, landlords and their tenants.
Electrical testing benefits include:
At HF, we provide Periodic Inspection and Testing services across the UK. All our testing and inspection services are offered with required certification for fixed wiring in line with our NICEIC regulations.
We can offer electrical inspection and testing services for:
We are able to offer our clients a full electronic version of NICEIC certification with our online NICEIC registration allowing engineers to complete results using the latest technology Smart tablets and laptops.
To find out more about our electrical periodic inspection and testing and for a full range of electrical tests available to your commercial business or domestic home, please contact us on 0800 783 9480.

But they didn’t go up early because we were excited about Christmas but because we were running a charity collection that we were calling ‘Gift a Gift’.
Many UK children will wake up on Christmas to no toys and we wanted to help change that! This year, all the Xmas trees in our branches in Glasgow, Edinburgh, Manchester, Belfast and Aberdeen had tags added to them giving the age and gender of a child that members of HF were able to buy a present for.
It may not be much but if it can help put smiles on more faces on Christmas Day then all for the better. And we are delighted to say that many of the HF family ‘over delivered’ with generosity and we managed to donate a huge number of presents to children of all ages this Christmas. From toys to clothes, footballs, art supplies…..there was a lot.
Each branch nominated their own charity to donate to with the Glasgow office selecting Cash for Kids, the Edinburgh office selecting The Salvation Army, Manchester picking Children’s Services, Belfast selecting Planet Radio and Aberdeen choosing Barnardo’s.
Christmas is the time for giving and we are incredibly proud of the generosity of so many members of the HF team this Christmas.

We recently added a new MG 4 electric vehicle to our fleet and wanted to make a statement with the vehicle wrap on the vehicle. We turned to Lundie Media to sort the design and could not be more happy with the outcome. The design follows our existing brand guidelines whilst also being new and fresh. The lines flowing from green energy green coloured to our famous HF blue helps to demonstrate the green side of our business whilst the back of the car helps to highlight our different divisions Electrical, Green Energy, Mechanical, Plumbing, Heating & AC, Fire & Security, Telecommunications and Automated Controls.
A big thank you to Signpost Digital for the vehicle wrap application. You never want to loose a vehicle off the road for too long when it is getting wrapped and they managed to turn around this job incredibly quickly.
As one of the oldest electrical contractors in the UK, it was only natural for us to move into EV Charger Installations and with the increased popularity of electric vehicles, we hare been very busy installing EV chargers for both domestic and commercial properties up and down the country. So it was only natural for us to start introducing new electric vehicles to our own fleet as well.
At HF, we are a group of world-class companies leading the way in next-generation technologies; and all with a family continuity at management level which is rarely seen. We can provide a complete electric vehicle charging service. From advising on the best charging station units for your installation to providing year round maintenance contracts to ensure your system is always running at full power.
EV charging stations are not like petrol stations with universal pumping systems. There are different branded manufacturers and levels of charging station. Wall mounted 7kW EV chargers are the most common and are seen both in business parks and residential driveways. They are compatible with the vast majority of current electric vehicles on sale (we can advise you on the specifics) and an average charge time for an electric vehicle will take between 3 to 4 hours. There are faster, more powerful charging systems and even something called ‘Rapid Chargers’. Our qualified EV Charger Installation team can advise you on the best fit for your business needs.
If you would like to know more about Electric Vehicle Charging System Fitting and Maintenance for your business, retail car park or other parking facility, please get in touch. With offices across the UK, we will be able to assign your enquiry to the best person to speak to for your business. Simply fill in the form below or call 0800 783 9480 today.
Members of HF from Electrical, Mechanical, Fire & Security, Telecommunications and Automated Controls from our branches in Glasgow, Edinburgh, Manchester, Belfast and Aberdeen all came together for a great night at The Village Hotel in Glasgow and really got into the Christmas spirit.
The night started off with some welcome drinks and allowed members of the HF team to mingle, have a chat and get to introduce themselves to other members of the HF family that they may never have met. For a company of our size and with branches across the UK, the night offered a great opportunity for those who had only had dealings with each other through phone and email to meet face to face.
The night then continued with a sit down buffet while a DJ ran some fun quiz games and did the raffle for a Halloween competition that we had run in October. Drinking and dancing saw the night run into the small hours before everyone got home safely.
The only downside of the night was that we have to wait a full year until the next Christmas party. Though our social committee will be planning many exciting things for the HF team in the early months of 2024 so we won’t have to wait long until the next exciting HF event. We can’t wait.
And now we have gone one better by winning their National Subcontractor of the year award!

The award is given to the subcontractor in recognition of the quality work and service that they have provided them over the last year on a range of large scale jobs across the UK. Quality is one of our four core values as a company and we are delighted to have received this award because it recognises our committed in this area.
Safety is always our priority. Individually and collectively, we are all responsible.
We deliver on a consistent basis a superior quality service and solutions, so that we ensure complete customer satisfaction.
We put people first. We are at our strongest and most effective when we respect, value, and collaborate together. We are one team.
Our customers, suppliers and communities trust us to always do the right thing.

If you would like to know more about HF and our award winning range of services that we can offer across the UK through our branches in Glasgow, Edinburgh, Manchester, Belfast and Aberdeen, please contact us.
Firstly, John celebrated his 60th birthday in the middle of November and just two weeks later, was celebrating again as he officially hit an impressive 40 years as a member of the HF family.
1983 – Microsoft had just released the first computer mouse, Margaret Thatcher was re-elected UK Prime Minister, the first ever £1 coin was introduced and a 20 year old John Ferguson began working as an apprentice electrician at HF when he emigrated south from Mallaig to the Central Belt of Scotland to complete his last year of training.
1984 – This year saw John achieve an M.B.E (Mallaig’s Best Electrician) as he passed his final year of apprenticeship and became an electrician. This was self-awarded and we are almost certain that Charlie King, whom John started his apprenticeship under, would likely argue that he was Mallaig’s best. That said, we can confirm he did definitely pick up 1 prestigious award that year as he was the 1984 winner of the HF Apprentice of the Year competition. So whilst we can’t confirm the M.B.E there is some evidence that would back up the H.F.B.E.
1986 – With 2 years under his belt as an electrician at HF, John quickly started moving up the ladder by becoming an approved electrician and worked on many large projects from factory fits out, to fancy high street stores in London. Towards the end of his time on the tools he worked in the large ship yard of John Brown Engineer on the River Clyde.
1996 – John was given the opportunity to put down the tools and became our Service Desk Manager in the mid-nineties, working in our Glasgow office on Albert Drive. An opportunity that he quickly embraced.
2002 – John was promoted to Operations Director of HF Electrical. That same year his first challenge was the creation of our Manchester operations (who last year celebrated their 20th year anniversary). Phil Belcher, our founding manager of Manchester remembers meeting John all those years ago. It was a suppliers day at Brands Hatch back in 2001, Phil gave John his business card in the hope of selling his wares up in Scotland; not aware that within the year he would join HF himself. The rest is history!
2003 – With the sudden departure of two of the senior members of our HF Controls company, we looked for a strong and steady pair of hands and so John became Managing Director at the same time that Brendan Duffy was appointed the Director of HF Controls. Between them, they have helped shape the business that has now become a world leader in bespoke control panel systems for industries as diverse as transportation, energy and manufacturing.
2004 – With the ever-present strength of our Electrical Division, came the creation of our Mechanical Division and guess who was in the thick of it….our John.
2007 – With the constantly growing divisions and services of Electrical, Mechanical, Fire and Security, Telecommunications and Automated Controls, HF Group Ltd was formed to allow the individual companies within HF to continue trading under their own identity whilst being part of the HF Group and allowing for future growth. John, given his influence in keys parts of the company became one the 1st board members of the newly formed HF Group, where he remains to this day.
2008 – During one of the worst recessions the UK had ever seen, HF expanded its reach by creating our Belfast Branch.
2010 – John spearheaded the on-boarding of almost 20 new employees in our Mechanical division over a weekend as one our competitors hit hard times and we joined forces.
2012 – Following the successful establishment of our branches in Manchester and Belfast, 2012 saw the creation of our Aberdeen branch, giving the HF brand a stronger offering in M&E and F&S to existing clients in the North East of Scotland.
2020 – Having worked for the company for over 35 years, first starting as an apprentice and climbing the HF ladder, John became the Managing Director of HF Mechanical & Electrical. The celebrations wouldn’t last long as within months, the country locked down due to the Covid-19 pandemic. John was responsible for steering the company through the Covid-19 pandemic, successfully getting HF Mechanical & Electrical through this incredibly turbulent time.
In summary, over his four decades working for HF, John has seen and been involved in A LOT and we can not thank him enough. Over his time he has met 4 generations of Hugh’s, working with 3 of those generations. His time at HF started in the last century when our current Group Managing Director, Hugh R had just turned 3 years old. That same year Jill Nicolson (our current Financial Director) was born. He has seen, influenced and helped shape HF from when they offered solely electrical services turning over circa £2 – 3M per annum into the diverse group of companies we are today with a combined turnover of almost 16x what it was back in 1983.
In his time at HF, John has seen 2 National Recessions, 9 Prime Ministers, 6 Scottish First Ministers and 1 Global Pandemic.
The technology in this time has also changed. Distribution has changed from rewireable fuses to modern day RCBOs and surge protection devices. Lighting has moved from tungsten lamps through to low Voltage and now LED. He is also one of the last of a few that we would have full confidence in to make off a pyro end. Cars these days even require a plug and extension lead, a far cry from the Chrysler Alpine that John drove in the early 80s and that helped transport him and his family from the Highlands to his new life in Glasgow… after all these years I am sure you will agree he has not aged a day 😊
We have always made the promise to those that join the HF family that working for us is a lot more than just a job, it is a career. Now celebrating his 40th year at HF, John is a perfect example of someone who started out in life as an apprentice, learned the trade, grew and advanced with the company, embracing unique challenges, a varied workload and great career progression opportunities to become our Mechanical & Electrical Managing Director.

But in order for us to deliver time and time again for out customers, we need to draw on the support of a great range of subcontractors.
Every year, we hold an annual award for our ‘Subcontractor of the Year’ working with HF Comms and this year we are delighted to announce that Buzz Wireless Networks are our winner.
It was an incredibly close competition with several other subcontractors and the challenge of picking a winner only helps to remind us of what a great subcontractor base we have to work with.
But in 2023, Buzz Wireless Networks have been nothing short of great and very supportive working with us. The win went in their favour thanks to a stellar year based on man hours on site as well as their focus on safety and quality. Both of which are key values that we ourselves hold onto firmly.
We were delighted to welcome their MD Scott Phipps to our Glasgow office this week to hand over the trophy which was presented by our Head of Construction, Andy McKay.
Thank you once again to Buzz Wireless Networks and all of our subcontractors for your hard work in 2023. We look forward to working closely with you all in 2024.

When technological advancements shape our daily lives, the integration of CCTV (Closed-Circuit Television) systems into home security packages has become increasingly popular as a deterrent against burglaries. CCTV offers a comprehensive solution to safeguarding homes, providing numerous benefits that contribute to peace of mind and a heightened sense of security. At HF Fire & Security, we are backed up with NSI Gold and NSI Fire Gold accreditation so that we can operate to the highest possible industry standard and guidelines across the UK. Our team can advise you on all types of security system that you should have, giving you the very best in security to suit your needs. So lets explore the advantages of including CCTV as a vital component of your home security setup.
The mere presence of visible CCTV cameras acts as a powerful deterrent to potential intruders and criminals. Knowing that their actions are being recorded significantly reduces the likelihood of criminal activity. Studies have consistently shown that properties equipped with visible surveillance systems are less likely to be targeted by burglars, making CCTV an effective proactive measure.
In the unfortunate event of a security breach or criminal activity, CCTV systems provide invaluable documentation and evidence. High-quality video footage can aid law enforcement in identifying perpetrators and serves as a critical resource in the investigation and prosecution process. This not only helps recover stolen property but also increases the likelihood of bringing criminals to justice.
Modern CCTV systems offer remote monitoring capabilities, allowing homeowners to keep an eye on their property in real-time, regardless of their physical location. Through mobile apps or online platforms, homeowners can access live feeds and review recorded footage. This feature is particularly beneficial for individuals who travel frequently or spend extended periods away from home, providing constant reassurance and the ability to respond promptly to potential threats.
Installing a CCTV system can often lead to reduced home insurance premiums. Insurance companies recognise the added layer of security that surveillance systems provide, acknowledging the decreased risk of break-ins and property damage. Homeowners may be eligible for discounts or special rates upon installing CCTV, making it a cost-effective investment in the long run.
Beyond the immediate security benefits, the installation of a CCTV system can enhance the overall value of a property. Potential buyers often view security features as a desirable asset, making a home equipped with a CCTV system more appealing. This can contribute to a competitive edge in the real estate market.
CCTV systems seamlessly integrate with modern smart home technologies, allowing users to create a comprehensive and interconnected security network. Integration with other devices, such as motion sensors, smart locks, and alarms, enhances the overall efficiency and responsiveness of the security system. Users can receive real-time alerts and take immediate action to address potential security threats.
Incorporating CCTV into a home security package is a wise investment that provides a multifaceted approach to safeguarding your property. From deterring criminal activity and providing concrete evidence to enabling remote monitoring and integrating with smart home systems, CCTV enhances both the security and convenience of modern living. As technology continues to advance, the integration of CCTV into home security packages will likely become an increasingly integral aspect of protecting homes and ensuring the safety of residents.
We have installed thousands of security systems in businesses and homes of all shapes and sizes. We believe firmly in excellent client communication and our entire Security Division puts this at the centre of everything we do. In an era where security threats are constantly evolving, traditional security measures are being added with new developments to safeguard valuable assets. One innovative solution gaining prominence in recent years and which we have fitted to multiple business sites across the UK is security fogging. This cutting-edge technology has emerged as a proactive and effective means of protecting spaces and assets from unauthorised access, theft, and vandalism.
Security fogging, also known as security smoke or fog security systems, involves the rapid deployment of a dense, non-toxic fog to obscure visibility within a protected area. This fog is typically generated using specialised machines that can release a thick cloud within seconds of an alarm being triggered. The fog is harmless and leaves no residue, making it a safe yet powerful security tool.
One of the primary benefits of security fogging is its ability to deter intruders instantly. The sudden appearance of dense fog disorients and confuses individuals within the protected space, making it difficult for them to navigate or carry out illicit activities. This immediate response serves as a powerful deterrent against theft, vandalism, or any other malicious intent.
Security fogging is particularly effective in safeguarding high-value assets such as electronics, jewelry, and sensitive equipment. By obscuring visibility, the fog makes it nearly impossible for intruders to locate and steal valuable items, minimising potential losses for businesses and individuals alike.
Traditional security systems often rely on law enforcement or security personnel to respond to alarms. Security fogging, on the other hand, creates an immediate and automated defence mechanism, reducing the response time and increasing the chances of thwarting a security breach before significant damage occurs.
Unlike some traditional security measures, security fogging systems use non-toxic solutions that are safe for humans and the environment. The fog consists of a glycol-based substance that leaves no residue and dissipates quickly, ensuring that the protected area can return to normal functionality without any long-term effects.
Security fogging systems are versatile and can be customised to suit different environments and security needs. Whether installed in retail stores, warehouses, or other commercial spaces, these systems can be tailored to the specific requirements of the location.
Implementing security fogging can be a cost-effective option when compared to other high-tech security measures. The initial investment is often outweighed by the potential savings from prevented theft or damage, making it an attractive choice for businesses seeking a robust security solution without breaking the bank.
In an ever-changing landscape of security threats, security fogging has emerged as a dynamic and effective solution for safeguarding assets and spaces. Its immediate deterrence, adaptability, and environmentally friendly nature make it an attractive option for businesses and individuals looking to enhance their security measures. As technology continues to advance, security fogging is likely to play an increasingly significant role in the evolving landscape of security systems.
At HF Fire & Security, we are backed up with NSI Gold and NSI Fire Gold accreditation so that we can operate to the highest possible industry standard and guidelines across the UK.
Our team can advise you on all types of security system that you should have ranging from security fogging to CCTV, access control and intruder alarms, giving you the very best in security to suit your needs. We can review your commercial property and provide recommendations on what products, system design and installation requirements you should have.
With senior-level hands-on management from initial planning to final handover in everything from facilities management services to advanced communication systems; we our incredibly proud of the services that we can offer our customers. It all adds up to a service fully focused on protection and delivering your requirements on time and on budget – because anything else, quite simply, won’t do.

In an era dominated by digital advancements and technological innovations, the significance of robust cybersecurity measures cannot be overstated. While hundreds of miles still separated the different branches, our Mechanical, Electrical, Fire & Security, Telecommunications and Automated Controls team all got to come together in a feast of all sorts of delicious food. And all for a good cause. Everyone who joined us on the day helped contribute money towards charity and one week later, we got to deliver those proceeds in the form of Long Life Milk!
Local foodbanks operate through donations from Churches, Schools, Fund Raising and Workplace Food Drives like the ones we organise throughout the year. And all the food that they collect is then divided into parcels including tinned and dried fruit, vegetables, toiletries etc.
So rather than simply donate money, we focused on what the local foodbank needs most. And top of their most wanted list is Long Life Milk. So that is exactly what we did.
The HF team delivered two shopping trollies full of Long Life Milk to the local Food Bank and we can only hope that this contribution helps those that need it the most.
While 2023 is fast coming to a close, we already have a variety of fundraising events planned for 2024 so we look forward to being able to do more of these kind of fundraising events in the future which brings our different divisions and branches closer together, all while benefiting local causes.
Stay tuned.
With the almost relentless number of yellow weather warnings we have been dealing with in Scotland, our electricians have been working flat out providing reactive electrical services for our customers up and down the country.
Storms can be powerful and unpredictable, wreaking havoc on our lives and the infrastructure that supports them. One critical part of the infrastructure that storms can have a serious effect on is electrical power, and when storms strike, power outages can be more than just an inconvenience – they can have serious consequences for businesses. And that is why being able to call on our reactive electrical services can be such a crucial benefit for businesses that trust HF to deliver in electrical, mechanical and fire & security services 24/7.
Storms have the potential to disrupt electrical infrastructure in various ways. Strong winds can bring down power lines, while heavy rainfall and flooding can damage substations and transformers. Lightning strikes and falling trees are common culprits in causing power outages. Additionally, extreme weather conditions can lead to electrical equipment failure and electrical fires.
In the aftermath of a storm, widespread power outages can disrupt essential services, moreover, without electricity, households and businesses are left without heating, cooling, refrigeration, and lighting, affecting daily life and productivity. If a restaurant looses power, they could loose hundred, if not thousands of pounds worth of spoilt food if their refrigerators and freezers are not turned back on quickly.
One of the most recent reactive electrical services we have had to provide is for Burger King in Aberdeen. The recent storm shut off power to one of their restaurants and our reactive electricians had to be quickly dispatched to fix the issue.
Providing reactive electrical services nationwide, here are some key components of reactive electrical services:
Assessment: The first step in restoring power after a storm is to assess the extent of the damage. Our electricians survey the affected areas to determine what repairs are necessary.
Safety First: Safety is paramount to us so our electricians ensure that power lines are de-energized and secure. They also take precautions to avoid electrical hazards and adhere to safety protocols.
Repairs and Restoration: Once the assessment is complete and safety is assured, our electricians work to repair damaged electrical systems. This may involve replacing damaged components and restoring power to critical assets first.
Preventive Measures: In some cases, reactive electrical services involve implementing preventive measures to minimise the impact of future storms.
Our reactive electrical services play a critical role in restoring power after storms for businesses up and down the country. In the face of increasingly severe and frequent weather events, knowing that your business has one of the very best electrical contractors in the country, with a history spanning over three centuries, can be invaluable to ensuring reduced downtime and protection of vital electrical assets.
All of our Electrical Division vehicles are fully GPS tracked to ensure that we can get the closest and best suited electrical operative to your site as quickly as possible. Our electrical contract engineers use state of the art Portable Handheld Devices to allow better and faster communication for job sign off or alerting the office if a follow up visit is required for parts or quotation.
If you would like to know more about our reactive electrical services, please contact us.

The recent Storm Babet has cost many people across the East Coast of Scotland terrible hardship and has unfortunately even taken the lives of others who have been caught in the heavy wind, rain and flooding.
With red and amber weather warnings across so much of the country during the storm, we have been advising all of our engineers to take extra care because safety is our highest priority for everyone in the HF family.
Yet despite so many dark news stories related to the storm, we wanted to shine a light on the efforts of one of our engineers Norman, who last week helped rescue a father and son who were involved in a scary accident right in front of him.
While following a high sided vehicle, a strong gust of wind caused the vehicle to loose control, blowing it off the road before overturning three times and coming to rest in the river just off the main road.
Our engineer Norman immediately parked up safely, called the emergency services after witnessing the severity of the accident then, upon assessment of the situation sped to action.
Thankfully, the water that the vehicle landed in was not overly deep or fast flowing so our engineer Norman wadded through the water to assist. He was able to safely extract both the Father and Son from the vehicle before allowing them to recover from the shocking ordeal in his HF vehicle. As a trained First Aider he administered first aid and gave them some warm clothing whilst they waited in the safety of his parked vehicle to keep them warm until the Emergency Services arrived.
Thankfully, both passenger involved in the high sided vehicle crash were okay though the situation could have been a lot worse.
Safety is always our priority at HF. Individually and collectively we are all responsible. We are incredibly proud to see that one of our four main values as a company has been so well reflected in the efforts undertaken from our engineer Norman to help others in need during such a dangerous incident.
While there has been so many sad stories related to the storm, we feel that this is a really positive story regarding one of our employees actions and we wanted to highlight and give recognition to Norman for what he did.
We are as good as our people and Norman is a great example of our team.

In our industry, where precision and reliability are paramount, establishing trust between clients and contractors is crucial. Construction Line Accreditation is a certification scheme that plays a significant role in building this trust. But what is Construction Line, why is it important and what advantages does it have for our Electricians, Plumbers, Gas Engineers and Fire & Security Installers? Let’s delve into what Construction Line Accreditation is, why it matters, and how it benefits both contractors like ourselves and our clients.
Construction Line is a UK-based accreditation service that simplifies and streamlines the pre-qualification process for contractors and suppliers in the construction industry. It acts as a third-party validation of a company’s competency, capability, and compliance with industry standards, regulations, and best practices.
To achieve Construction Line Accreditation, we must undergo a thorough assessment of various aspects of our business operations. This assessment encompasses financial stability, health and safety compliance, environmental responsibility, quality management, and other key criteria relevant to the construction industry.
For clients seeking contractors or suppliers, Construction Line Accreditation streamlines the procurement process. It provides a readily accessible database of pre-qualified companies, saving time and effort in the selection and vetting of potential partners.
Accreditation reduces the risk of working with unreliable or non-compliant contractors. Clients can have confidence that accredited companies like HF have met stringent criteria, making them more likely to deliver projects on time, within budget, and to specified quality standards.
The construction industry is heavily regulated, with numerous health and safety, environmental, and quality standards to adhere to. Construction Line Accreditation ensures we are up to date with the latest regulations, reducing the risk of legal issues and delays.
Accreditation enhances a company’s credibility and reputation in the industry. It signals to clients, investors, and stakeholders that the accredited company is committed to excellence and compliance.

Fire alarm systems play a vital role in safeguarding lives and property across the United Kingdom. These systems are an integral part of fire safety measures in homes, businesses, and public spaces, helping to detect and alert occupants to the presence of a fire, enabling timely evacuation and firefighting responses. As one of the leading Fire & Security installers in the UK, we wanted to explore the importance of fire alarm systems in the UK, their types, regulations, and advancements in technology.
Fire alarm systems are the first line of defence against the devastating consequences of fires. Their primary purpose is to detect the presence of smoke, heat, or flames and then notify occupants and emergency services, allowing for swift action to minimise damage and save lives. Here are some key reasons why fire alarm systems are crucial in the UK:
Early Detection: Fire alarms provide early warning, allowing people to evacuate safely before the fire spreads and becomes uncontrollable.
Reduced Losses: Timely alerts can minimise property damage, reduce financial losses, and protect valuable assets.
Life Safety: The top priority of any fire alarm system is the protection of human life. They ensure that occupants have enough time to escape a building during a fire emergency.
Fire alarm systems in the UK come in various types, each designed for specific applications:
Conventional Fire Alarm Systems: These systems divide a building into zones, with each zone connected to a specific detector or group of detectors. When a detector is triggered, the system identifies the affected zone but does not provide specific information about the location of the fire.
Addressable Fire Alarm Systems: Addressable systems pinpoint the exact location of a triggered detector or device. They are ideal for larger buildings and complexes, as they facilitate quick and precise response by emergency services.
Wireless Fire Alarm Systems: These systems use wireless technology to connect detectors and devices. They are flexible and can be installed with minimal disruption to existing structures.
Aspirating Smoke Detection Systems: These highly sensitive systems use air sampling to detect smoke particles at an early stage, making them suitable for critical environments such as data centres, manufacturing factories, dry food storage sites and museums.
Voice Alarm Systems: Voice alarm systems combine audible alarms with voice messages, providing clear instructions to occupants during an emergency.
Fire alarm systems in the UK are subject to strict regulations and standards to ensure their reliability and effectiveness. The key regulatory body governing fire safety is the Fire Safety Order 2005, which places responsibility on building owners and employers to assess and manage fire risks. In addition to this, British Standard BS 5839 sets out the requirements for fire detection and alarm systems in buildings.
Advancements in technology have led to the development of more sophisticated and reliable fire alarm systems. Some notable advancements include:
Integration with Building Management Systems (BMS): Modern fire alarm systems can seamlessly integrate with BMS to provide a holistic approach to building safety and automation.
Intelligent Detectors: Addressable systems now feature intelligent detectors with self-testing capabilities, reducing maintenance requirements and improving system reliability.
Remote Monitoring: Many fire alarm systems can be monitored remotely, allowing for quicker response times and reduced false alarms.
Enhanced Communication: Fire alarm systems can now communicate with emergency services and building occupants through various means, including text messages and mobile apps.
Fire alarm systems are an indispensable part of fire safety measures in the UK. They provide early detection, save lives, and protect property from the devastating effects of fires. With evolving technology and stringent regulations, the future of fire alarm systems promises even greater safety and reliability for individuals and businesses across the country. As such, investing in a quality fire alarm system is not just a legal requirement but a responsible choice that can make a significant difference in times of emergency.

These devices are designed to detect unauthorised entry into a premises and alert the occupants and/or a monitoring centre. While intruder alarms have evolved significantly over the years, the question of their effectiveness remains crucial in today’s security landscape. At HF Fire & Security, we are one of the leading security installers for domestic, commercial and industrial premises across the country so it is important to explore the effectiveness of intruder alarms and evaluate their role in modern security systems.
Intruder alarms have come a long way since their inception. Initially, they were simple systems with loud sirens that would trigger when a door or window was opened without proper authorisation. These basic alarms, while effective to some extent, often led to false alarms and could be easily tampered with by experienced burglars.
Today’s intruder alarms have significantly improved in terms of technology and reliability. Modern alarms are typically integrated with advanced sensors, control panels, and communication systems. They come in various types, including wired, wireless, and hybrid systems, providing home owners and businesses alike with a range of options to choose from.
To assess the effectiveness of intruder alarms, we must consider several key factors:
Deterrence: The mere presence of an intruder alarm can act as a deterrent to potential burglars. Knowing that a property is protected by an alarm system may discourage criminals from attempting a break-in in the first place.
Detection: The primary function of intruder alarms is to detect unauthorised access. Modern sensors can detect motion, vibrations, and even the sound of breaking glass. This detection capability is a crucial aspect of effectiveness.
Notification: Once an alarm is triggered, it notifies the relevant parties, such as the property owner, security personnel or a monitoring centre. Swift and reliable notification is vital for a timely response.
False Alarm Reduction: False alarms historically have been a significant drawback of intruder alarms, as they can lead to complacency or annoyance. Effective systems incorporate technology to reduce false alarms, such as pet-immune motion detectors and advanced verification methods. This is where experienced security system installers like ourselves trump ‘off the shelf’ systems that people can buy online.
Communication: The ability of an intruder alarm system to communicate alerts and information is crucial. Many modern systems are connected to the internet or phone networks, enabling remote monitoring and control through smartphone apps or central monitoring stations.
Intruder alarms, when properly installed and maintained, can be highly effective in deterring and preventing burglaries. Studies have shown that properties with visible alarm systems are less likely to be targeted by criminals. The mere presence of a prominently displayed alarm sign can be a strong deterrent.
Intruder alarms also excel in the detection of unauthorised entry. Advanced sensor technologies, such as passive infrared (PIR) sensors and door/window contacts, minimise false alarms and provide reliable detection.
Moreover, the integration of alarm systems with other security measures, such as CCTV surveillance cameras and access control systems, enhances their effectiveness. Video verification can provide visual confirmation of an intrusion, allowing for a more informed response.
Intruder alarms remain a valuable component of modern security systems, offering effective deterrence, detection, and notification capabilities. However, their effectiveness depends on several factors, including proper installation, maintenance, and integration with other security measures.
To maximise the effectiveness of intruder alarms, property owners should invest in reputable alarm systems, employ professional installers and ensure routine maintenance and testing. When combined with other security measures, such as surveillance cameras and access control systems, intruder alarms can provide a robust defence against unauthorised entry and theft, contributing to overall safety and peace of mind.

In our modern world, electricity powers virtually every aspect of our lives. From lighting up our homes to running complex industrial machinery, electricity is an indispensable resource. However, this essential power source can be both a blessing and a potential hazard. Electrical circuits can sometimes become overloaded or develop faults, which, if left unaddressed, can lead to electrical fires, equipment damage, and even life-threatening situations. This is where Miniature Circuit Breakers (MCBs) come into play.
A Miniature Circuit Breaker, often abbreviated as MCB, is a vital electrical protection device. It is designed to safeguard electrical circuits from overcurrents and short circuits. MCBs are an integral part of electrical distribution systems, serving as the first line of defense against electrical faults. They are called “miniature” because they are compact and space-efficient, making them suitable for installation in electrical distribution panels, consumer units, and even individual electrical devices.
MCBs operate on a simple yet effective principle: they automatically disconnect the electrical circuit they protect when they detect abnormal currents. There are two primary mechanisms within an MCB that facilitate this function: thermal and magnetic.
Thermal Mechanism: The thermal component of an MCB responds to prolonged overcurrents. When the current in the circuit exceeds the rated value for an extended period, the temperature of the thermal element rises. Once the temperature reaches a critical threshold, the MCB trips, opening the circuit to prevent overheating and potential fire hazards.
Magnetic Mechanism: The magnetic component of an MCB responds to short circuits, which involve a sudden, massive surge of current. Magnetic trips are extremely fast-acting and disconnect the circuit almost instantly when they detect such high currents. This rapid response is crucial for preventing damage and ensuring safety in the event of a short circuit.
MCBs possess several features and characteristics that make them indispensable for electrical safety:
Trip Characteristics: MCBs come with different trip characteristics, denoted as B, C, or D types. These characteristics determine how quickly the MCB responds to overcurrents, making them suitable for various applications. For instance, a Type C MCB is often used for lighting circuits, while a Type D MCB is ideal for circuits with high inrush currents, such as those involving motors or transformers.
Current Ratings: MCBs are available in various current ratings, accommodating different power requirements. Common ratings include 6A, 10A, 16A, 20A, and 32A, among others.
Resettable: Unlike fuses, which need to be replaced after they trip, MCBs are resettable. Once the fault in the circuit is rectified, the MCB can be manually reset by flipping the switch back to its “ON” position.
Sensitivity: MCBs are sensitive to both overloads and short circuits, making them versatile for protecting a wide range of electrical circuits and devices.
Test and Reset Buttons: Many MCBs feature test and reset buttons. The test button allows for periodic testing to ensure the MCB is functioning correctly, while the reset button is used to restore power after a trip.
DIN Rail Mounting: MCBs are designed for easy installation on DIN rails within electrical distribution panels or enclosures, simplifying their integration into electrical systems.
Miniature Circuit Breakers are unsung heroes of electrical safety, providing crucial protection against over currents and short circuits. They are essential components in residential, commercial, and industrial electrical systems, ensuring that our reliance on electricity does not compromise our safety. As we continue to rely on electrical power for nearly every aspect of our lives, the importance of MCBs in safeguarding against electrical hazards cannot be overstated. Their compact size, reliability, and versatility make them a cornerstone of modern electrical systems, promoting safety and peace of mind for all users.

Whether electrical wiring is for a domestic property, commercial premises or an industrial unit, understanding the costs associated with electrical wiring is essential. At HF, we are NICEIC and Select Approved Electrical Contractors providing Manned electrical 24 hour Call-out Service nationwide and are the first choice for some of the country’s leading businesses when it comes to electrical services. With a history spanning over three centuries, the HF brand has grown from our humble roots as a local electrician in Glasgow to a multi service brand dealing in everything from next generation telecommunication systems to advanced automated control systems. It all adds up to invaluable experience in electrical work in all areas of modern life. So what are the costs involved in electrical wiring?
The type of wiring material you choose significantly impacts the overall cost of your electrical project. There are several options available, including:
Copper Wiring: Copper is a highly conductive and durable material. It is the most commonly used wiring material and generally more expensive than alternatives like aluminium. However, it offers better performance and longevity.
Aluminium Wiring: Aluminium wiring is more cost-effective than copper, but it can be less reliable due to its lower conductivity. Special precautions, like using anti-oxidant compounds, may be required for safety and longevity.
Wiring Insulation: The type and quality of insulation used on the wires also affect costs. Some wires are designed for specific applications, such as underground or outdoor use, which may cost more than standard indoor wiring.
The gauge or thickness of the wiring also plays a crucial role in cost estimation. Thicker wires can carry more current and are typically more expensive. The choice of wire gauge should align with the electrical load requirements of the building requiring electrical wiring completed. Oversizing wires can increase material costs but may be necessary for safety and efficiency.
Labour costs for electrical wiring can vary based on factors such as location and the complexity of the project. At HF, we deal with electrical installations and rewiring jobs across Scotland. That means everything from multi storey commercial office buildings in the heart of Glasgow to Hotels in Ullapool. Older buildings are historically more challenging to complete rewiring on because of access restrictions while projects that are located in hard to reach places require more travel time and potentially overnight accommodation costs.
Electrical work typically require inspections to ensure compliance with local building codes and safety standards. These costs can add to your overall expenses but are essential for ensuring the safety of your property.
The complexity of your electrical system will affect costs. A simple residential wiring project will be less expensive than a more intricate system for a commercial building that requires multiple circuits, outlets, and switches as well as reliable data points, air conditioning power supply and emergency lighting (to name just a few examples).
The accessibility of the wiring areas can influence costs. If your walls are easily accessible during construction or renovation, our electrician’s work is more straightforward and less time-consuming. In contrast, older properties and buildings with limited access to the existing electrical wiring may require more labour to simply access what is already there.
If your project involves upgrading an older electrical system or implementing safety measures like surge protection, these enhancements will contribute to your overall expenses but are essential for modern electrical safety standards.
Consider the long-term costs associated with your electrical system. Investing in high-quality materials and professional installation can save you money in the long run by reducing the need for repairs and replacements. From Electrical Installations to Planned Maintenance Contracts, quality service and peace of mind are the principles on which the Fulton family founded the company as electrical contractors all those years ago, and it’s just as important today.
At HF, our Estimating Department work tirelessly to ensure that costs we give to our customers are accurate taking factors such as wiring material, gauge, labour costs, permits, complexity, accessibility, and necessary upgrades into account.

While both share similarities in terms of electrical components and safety standards, they are distinct fields with unique requirements, challenges, and applications. So lets delve into the key differences between commercial and industrial electrical work, shedding light on the specific considerations and challenges that our electricians have to contend with in these sectors.
One of the primary distinctions between commercial and industrial electrical work is the scale and purpose of the electrical systems involved.
Commercial electrical work typically involves smaller-scale projects, such as offices, retail stores, restaurants, and other businesses.
The primary focus is on providing electrical services for the smooth operation of the premises, including lighting, HVAC systems, computers, and security systems.
Commercial buildings are often designed with aesthetics in mind, so electrical installations must be neat and concealed to maintain a polished appearance.
Industrial electrical work, on the other hand, is associated with large-scale operations like factories, manufacturing plants, refineries, and power generation facilities.
The primary purpose is to facilitate the functioning of heavy machinery, production processes, and power distribution on a massive scale.
In industrial settings, functionality and safety take precedence over aesthetics, and electrical components are often exposed for easy access and maintenance.
Another significant difference lies in the electrical load and capacity requirements for commercial and industrial installations.
Commercial buildings typically have a moderate electrical load compared to industrial facilities.
The electrical systems are designed to accommodate standard office equipment, lighting, and HVAC systems.
The load calculations are based on factors like square footage, the number of outlets, and expected power consumption.
Industrial settings have significantly higher electrical demands due to the operation of heavy machinery and equipment.
Electrical systems in industrial environments must handle substantial power loads and often require high-voltage distribution systems.
Because of this, our electricians must perform meticulous load calculations to ensure the electrical infrastructure can support the machinery’s power requirements without overloading.
The complexity and control requirements in commercial and industrial electrical work also differ substantially.
Commercial installations are typically less complex in terms of control systems. Control systems in commercial settings are often centred around basic automation for lighting, heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC), as well as security systems.
Building management systems (BMS) are commonly used for energy efficiency and security control.
Industrial electrical systems are highly complex and may involve intricate control systems for machinery and production processes.
Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) are frequently employed to monitor and control industrial equipment.
Precision is paramount in industrial settings, where small deviations in electrical parameters can result in costly downtime or safety hazards.
Both commercial and industrial electrical work adhere to stringent safety regulations, but the specific standards and requirements can vary significantly.
Commercial electrical work has to comply with strict regulations for electrical installations, maintenance and repairs.
Safety measures focus on fire prevention, emergency lighting, and ensuring electrical equipment is safe for public occupancy.
Industrial electrical work may need to comply with additional safety standards. If the industrial facility includes food production for example, there is additional hygiene considerations to be considered.
Safety protocols are highly specialised and include lockout/tagout procedures, arc flash protection, and extensive training for personnel working in hazardous environments.
In summary, while commercial and industrial electrical work share some common principles and components, they are distinct fields with unique challenges and requirements. Commercial electrical work centres around smaller-scale projects with a focus on moderate electrical loads, while industrial electrical work deals with large-scale operations, heavy machinery, and complex control systems. Both fields prioritise safety, but the regulations and protocols can differ significantly. Understanding these differences is crucial for our electricians working in these sectors to ensure the safe and efficient operation of electrical systems in commercial and industrial settings.

When a fire alarm is activated, it can save lives by alerting occupants to the presence of a fire, enabling them to evacuate quickly and safely. Fire alarm call points play a crucial role in initiating the fire alarm when someone spots a fire, however once the fire alarm has been activated and the emergency has been dealt with, the fire alarm call point needs to be resent.
It is vitally important to reset the fire alarm call points to ensure that, in the event of a future fire that the call point is active and working correctly. At HF Fire & Security, we want to share the steps behind resetting the Fire Alarm call point to ensure your business and the occupants of the building are always safe.
Before attempting to reset a fire alarm call point, it’s essential to prioritise safety. If there is a genuine fire emergency, evacuation should always be the top priority. Never attempt to reset a call point if there is any doubt about the presence of a fire or other hazards. Instead, evacuate the building and call the fire department immediately. Remember that since the 1st July 2023, the Scottish Fire Department will only attend a fire alarm call unless they are ‘confirmed’.
Once safety is ensured and the area is clear of any immediate danger, locate the specific fire alarm call point that has been activated. Call points are typically installed near exits, corridors, or other prominent locations throughout a building. They are easily recognisable by their red colour and the word “FIRE” or a similar text graphic.
To reset a fire alarm call point, you will need to open the protective cover. This cover is designed to prevent accidental activation and to protect the call point from tampering. Depending on the type of call point, the cover may be hinged or held in place with screws or other fasteners. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for opening the cover.
Once the cover is open, you will typically find a glass or plastic element that needs to be broken or pushed to reset the call point. This is dependent on the brand of fire alarm call point installed at your business. This element is often labelled as “RESET.” To reset the call point:
1. Use a suitable tool, push the reset element as indicated. Be careful not to damage the surrounding components.
2. Some call points may have a key or lever mechanism for resetting. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for your specific call point type.
After successfully resetting the call point, close the protective cover securely. Ensure it is fastened properly to prevent accidental activation in the future. If screws were removed, make sure they are tightened securely.
It’s crucial to test the fire alarm system to ensure that it is functioning correctly after resetting the call point. Inform your building’s maintenance or fire safety contractor of the reset and request a system test. This may involve sounding the alarm briefly to verify that the alarms, strobes, and notification devices are operational.
After resetting the fire alarm call point, document the incident in your building’s fire safety log or system. When we install a buildings fire alarm system, we provide our customers with a fire safety log book. This is mandatory for all Fire & Security installers. Report the activation and reset to the appropriate authorities and follow any additional procedures and building codes.

Resetting a fire alarm call point is a task that should only be undertaken by trained personnel in a safe and controlled environment. Properly following these steps is essential to maintain the integrity and reliability of your fire alarm system. Remember that fire safety is a shared responsibility, and understanding how to reset a fire alarm call point is just one aspect of ensuring the safety of building occupants. Power factor is a crucial electrical parameter that plays a significant role in the efficiency and reliability of electrical systems. It represents the ratio between real power (useful power) and apparent power (total power), and understanding how to calculate it is essential for optimising electrical systems and reducing energy waste. As one of the leading electrical contractors in the UK, we wanted to demystify power factor and explore the methods for calculating it.
It’s important to grasp the concept of power factor. Power factor is a dimensionless number that ranges between 0 and 1. It reveals how effectively electrical power is being converted into useful work. A high power factor indicates efficient power usage, while a low power factor implies wasted energy.
In electrical systems, two types of power are involved:
Real Power (P): Real power, measured in watts (W), is the actual power consumed by a device or system to perform useful work, such as producing light, heating, or performing mechanical work.
Apparent Power (S): Apparent power, measured in volt-amperes (VA), represents the total power supplied to a device or system, which includes both real power and reactive power.
Reactive power (Q) is a third component, representing power oscillations that occur in systems with inductive or capacitive loads. It doesn’t perform useful work but is necessary for the operation of certain equipment like electric motors.
The power factor (PF) is calculated as:
Power Factor (PF) = Real Power (P)/Apparent Power (S)
To calculate the power factor, we follow these steps:
Measure Real Power (P): Real power can be measured using a power meter or calculated by multiplying the voltage (V) and current (I) in a circuit (for resistive loads):
Real Power (P) = Voltage (V) x Current (I) x cos (θ)
Where θ is the phase angle between the voltage and current waveforms.
Measure Apparent Power (S): Apparent power can be measured directly using a power meter or calculated using the formula:
Apparent Power (S) = Voltage (V) x Current (I)
Calculate Power Factor (PF): Once you have real power (P) and apparent power (S), you can calculate the power factor using the formula
Power Factor (PF) = Real Power (P)/Apparent Power (S)
The power factor can have one of three values:
Leading Power Factor (PF > 1): This occurs when the load is capacitive, leading to a phase shift where the current leads the voltage. It is typically seen in systems with equipment like capacitors.
Unity Power Factor (PF = 1): A unity power factor indicates that all the supplied power is being used for useful work, with no reactive power involved. It is the ideal power factor for efficient power usage.
Lagging Power Factor (PF < 1): A lagging power factor is common in systems with inductive loads like motors and transformers. In this case, the current lags behind the voltage, indicating the presence of reactive power.
Calculating power factor is a fundamental step in understanding and optimising electrical systems. By knowing the power factor of your equipment and taking measures to improve it, you can increase energy efficiency, reduce waste, and enhance the overall reliability of your electrical infrastructure. Whether this is on industrial or residential electrical systems, a good grasp of power factor is essential for effective power management.
At HF, through the work we provide in Electrical, Mechanical, Fire & Security, Telecommunications and Automated Controls, it is vitally important that that power factors are calculate properly. For the control panels that we design in Automated Controls, we are working with significant voltage and even in air conditioning installation, ensuring that the electrical supply is optimised is important to reduce energy waste.
From commercial electrical installations to control panel systems for power plants, we can offer our customers unsurpassed levels of genuinely in-house capabilities. All driven by the values that are instilled in our entire team across all the companies within HF as ‘A Company Well Connected’.
Gordon joined HF and our Telecommunications business HF Comms in 2008 and in just short of fifteen years, Gordon (aka Flash) has become something of a jack of all trades for us. Operating as a driver up and down the country, working in the store room and provided essential labour for HF Comms as the company has expanded, Flash has been a vital part of what we do for our clients in telecommunications.
From day to day operations to HF nights out, you will always find a cheeky grin on Gordon’s face and he has been a firm favourite in the Glasgow office for many years.
“Utterly dependable regardless of the task, Gordon would always give 100% . No matter what time Gordon was to be on site, he was always available………..and with a smile. Happy to help.
With ‘old school’ values and a genuine drive to not let anyone down, Gordon is perhaps the last of a dwindling breed. A rare gem and will be sorely missed. Enjoy retirement Gordon…….you thoroughly deserve it.”
