Ian Mottram has recently joined our Mechanical & Electrical division working in our estimating department. So we thought, after a couple of weeks to allow him time to get settled in that we would sit down with Ian and do a Q&A to introduce him properly.
I’m the Senior Mechanical Estimator here, which means my team and I are responsible for determining the cost of various projects. We tackle some significant projects at HF, and our work in the office is where it all begins. We craft detailed estimates and proposals for our comprehensive mechanical services, which plays a crucial role in securing new projects and ensuring accurate cost estimates for the engineering work we provide.
So far, I’m really enjoying the friendly atmosphere in the office. Having worked at a few large companies over the years, I’ve noticed that the warm welcome here is unique. I don’t know whether it is due to the family-run nature of the business, the company’s rich history, or the fact that many employees have been here for a long time. Whatever the reason, the positive environment has really stood out to me so far.
I thrive on being busy. A day without enough to do can lead to a lack of focus and motivation. I prefer starting my day with a clear plan and a full schedule. An ideal day for me is one where I have a substantial amount of work ahead to dive into.
My entry into this field was somewhat serendipitous. Before 2004, I worked in the ball bearing industry—definitely as exciting as it sounds. I was a Director in a company in Inverness, and after achieving my goals there, I sought a new challenge. By chance, an opportunity arose to become a plumbing estimator at a company my father-in-law worked at. I took it, and for six years, I honed my skills in that role. In 2010, I developed a software program to modernise an outdated system which caught the attention of another business in Inverness. They brought me on as their Mechanical Estimator and I have stayed in that role ever since, gradually moved to different companies and migrating south, first to Edinburgh and now to Glasgow with HF.
Winning projects is what really drives me. There’s a deep satisfaction in it because while anyone can put together a price for a job, there’s an art to estimating that goes beyond the basics and can’t be easily taught.
I would tell my younger self to get into this line of work sooner. I’ve had a varied career, including time in the Air Force and as a Director at a successful company, but there’s something about estimating that I truly love. If I had known back then what I know now, I would have made the move earlier.
I’m a former member of something called Mensa International. It is an organisation for individuals with an IQ above 147. It might seem unusual, but I’m quite proud of that. Being part of the world’s largest and oldest IQ society was a significant achievement for me and something I will always be proud of.
Thanks Ian and welcome to the team.
At HF, our Mechanical Services division has been expanding steadily since its inception in 2007. Estimators have always been integral to our success, particularly when it comes to handling complex systems like plumbing, heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC). But why do we place such high value on estimators? Because a well-prepared, accurate quote not only increases our chances of winning contracts but also builds trust with our clients by demonstrating transparency and a clear understanding of the project’s scope and costs.
By identifying potential cost overruns or complications early on, estimators help us mitigate risks, avoid budget issues, and prevent project delays. In essence, they are key to ensuring that all our services—whether Electrical, Mechanical, Fire & Security, Comms, or Controls—are accurately quoted, competitively priced, and effectively managed.
As a diverse and ambitious family of companies, we pride ourselves on delivering superior quality and exceptional customer service. Attracting and retaining top talent is crucial to our success, as it drives positive outcomes and ensures we continue to make a significant impact for our customers, staff, suppliers, and communities.
That’s why we are thrilled to welcome Ian to our team as we continue to grow and evolve with industry advancements. His addition to our family-oriented management team reinforces the continuity and stability that sets us apart.
In automated controls and industrial automation, the foundation for reliable and efficient control systems lies in the quality and functionality of the components that power them. And that makes High Voltage Transformers (HVTs) indispensable. At HF, our Automated Controls division is at the forefront of designing and installing cutting-edge control panels and automated systems for clients across the globe and High Voltage Transformers play a pivotal role in ensuring the seamless operation and safety of our solutions.
At the core of any automated system is the need for stable and reliable power. High Voltage Transformers are essential in stepping down high-voltage power from the grid to lower voltages that are more suitable for our control panels and automated systems. This step-down process is crucial for powering various components, from sensors and controllers to actuators and communication devices. Without the precise functioning of HVTs, our control panels would be unable to maintain the consistent voltage levels required for accurate data processing and control execution. The result would lead to downtime and potential safety hazards in the industrial environments we serve.
Safety is of paramount concern in any industrial setting, particularly when dealing with high voltage electricity. High Voltage Transformers play a critical role in protecting both the equipment and the operators who work with our control panels and automated systems. By effectively managing and isolating high voltage currents, HVTs help prevent electrical surges that could damage sensitive components or, worse, cause electrical accidents.
The transformers are designed to provide electrical insulation between the high voltage input and the lower voltage output, ensuring that the risk of electrical shock is minimised. This not only safeguards the integrity of the system but also ensures compliance with stringent industrial safety standards.
Many of the industries and business sectors that we work in require control systems that can handle complex processes and high-power applications, such as manufacturing lines, energy distribution networks, and large-scale automation projects. High Voltage Transformers are capable of efficiently transmitting power over long distances without significant energy loss, making them ideal for such demanding environments. In these scenarios, the reliability of the HVTs directly impact the performance of the entire automated system. High-quality transformers ensure that the power delivered is consistent and free from fluctuations, which is critical for maintaining the precision and efficiency of automated processes.
At HF, we pride ourselves on delivering customised solutions tailored to the specific needs of our clients. High Voltage Transformers provide the flexibility needed to design control panels that can operate under various voltage requirements. Whether it’s a high-voltage industrial application or a more specialised low-voltage system, the adaptability of HVTs allows us to create solutions that are both effective and scalable.
Moreover, the ability to specify transformers with different ratings and configurations enables our engineers to design systems that are optimised for energy efficiency, reducing operational costs and environmental impact for our clients.
The significance of High Voltage Transformers cannot be overstated. They are the backbone that supports the reliable and safe operation of the control panels and automated systems we design at HF Automated Controls. By ensuring stable power delivery, enhancing safety, supporting high-power applications, and providing the flexibility needed for customization, HVTs are integral to the success of our projects.
As we continue to innovate and expand our capabilities, the role of High Voltage Transformers will remain central to our services of delivering top-tier automation solutions that meet the diverse needs of our clients.
If you would like to know more about the work we do in Automated Controls, please get in touch.

At HF, the health and safety of our team and clients are at the forefront of everything we do. As part of our ongoing commitment to safety, each month our Health & Safety team provides crucial information and toolbox talks to ensure our staff is well-informed about potential risks on-site. This September, we are focusing on the risks associated with asbestos—an often overlooked but highly dangerous material.
Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral that was widely used in construction materials until its risks became recognised. Although its use has been banned or heavily restricted in many countries, asbestos can still be found in buildings constructed before the year 2000. The fibres released from damaged or disturbed asbestos materials pose serious health risks, including lung cancer, asbestosis, and mesothelioma. These conditions often develop many years after exposure, making asbestos an insidious threat.
At HF, we continually stress the importance of vigilance and awareness to our team when working on sites of the risks. It is not always immediately apparent where asbestos might be present, and disturbing it unknowingly can lead to harmful exposure.
Our Management of Asbestos Procedure is designed to ensure the safety of our employees and clients by effectively managing asbestos risks on-site. The Asbestos Management Procedure provides clear guidelines for the control of asbestos containing materials within company premises and during any work activities. It outlines the responsibilities of employees, supervisors, and contractors to prevent inadvertent exposure to asbestos, ensuring the safety of everyone involved.
Our Service Desk is the first point of contact for asbestos information within HF premises while our Line Managers are responsible for obtaining asbestos surveys from clients ensuring employees and contractors are aware of any asbestos risks; verifying that all workers have current asbestos awareness certifications. Our Estimators must request asbestos information from clients and ensure proper surveys are conducted before any work begins.
There are two types of surveys:
No work should proceed without confirming the absence of asbestos or implementing necessary safety measures. In the event of an uncontrolled asbestos release, work must stop immediately. The area should be secured, and emergency procedures followed, including decontamination and notifying supervisors. Specialist contractors will be employed to clean the area, and air sampling will confirm safety before work resumes.
All HF employees are trained in asbestos awareness annually, ensuring they understand the risks and how to protect themselves and others. We DO NOT allow work that involves direct contact with asbestos materials.
Recently, one of our engineers was on-site for a routine inspection when they identified materials that appeared to contain asbestos. Recognising the potential danger, the engineer immediately halted work and notified his supervisor, who then informed the client. While the client had an asbestos survey, it did not identify the presence of an offcut asbestos insulation board in a ceiling void.
Thanks to our engineer’s keen eye and adherence to safety protocols, the situation was managed swiftly and safely. The client was deeply appreciative of our prompt action, which not only safeguarded the health of everyone on-site but also prevented further health risks for employees of the business in the future. This incident underscores the importance of our commitment to safety—not just for our employees but also for the clients we serve. Safety is always our priority. Individually and collectively, we are all responsible.
At HF, safety isn’t just a priority—it’s one of our core values. We are dedicated to ensuring that every member of our team is equipped with the knowledge and tools to work safely and responsibly. The identification of asbestos on-site by our engineer is a testament to the effectiveness of our ongoing safety training and our culture of vigilance.
Asbestos awareness is crucial, and we encourage everyone to stay informed and cautious. If you suspect that asbestos may be present on a site, do not attempt to handle it yourself. Instead, report it to your supervisor or the Health & Safety team immediately.
As we continue to uphold the highest safety standards, remember that the best defence against risks like asbestos is knowledge and awareness. Individually and collectively, we are all responsible.
Thank you for your commitment to maintaining a safe and healthy working environment. Let’s continue to work together to ensure that safety remains a top priority in everything we do.
Colin joins our already talented team as Head of Programmes and we wanted to introduce him to our clients with a ‘Meet the Team’ Q&A.
I am the Head of Programmes for HF Comms. While I have a few different roles within the company, my core responsibilities are looking after our MNO clients and all major programmes for our other clients.
Beyond this, I am also tasked with looking at potential new avenues for HF Comms to explore as we continue to grow the brand in the telecommunications industry. With the skills we have within the company, there are a lot of potential new doors for us to open and that is very exciting.
I have, through previous jobs know about HF Comms almost since their first days in the industry so I already knew about the company and their reputation in the telecommunications sector. S so from my first impressions, it is really satisfying to see that their reputation is well founded.
It is a very professional team that works here and from what I have witnessed, there is a good workplace environment, everyone likes what they do and seem to be approaching their work in the right manner. It helps create a good working environment so I am settling in quite nicely.
I like to be challenged in what I do. So while I don’t have an ideal work day, I have an ideal conclusion to a day and that is having a sense of accomplishment. Getting to the end of the day knowing that I have completed what I set out to do is what drives me and allows me to look forward to the day ahead more enthusiastically. Goals need to be achieved and I hope that I can bring more of that ethos to the company and get the most out of my team.
In truth it has all been by accident. As a teenager, I wanted to get my hands dirty and for one reason or another, that led to me pursuing a career as an engineer.
Out of school, I joined the Navy as a Marine Engineer and that gave me an invaluable learning experience and taught me a lot of new skills early on. When I left the Navy, I became a Steel Fabricator however it didn’t take long for me to realise that I couldn’t be on the tools all my life. So planning ahead, I went to night school training to become a draughtsman.
I moved around a few different jobs but when the market dipped, I decided to seek a new opportunity and almost by accident, found it in the Telecommunications sector. I have since spent the better part of three decades climbing the ladder before getting the opportunity to work here at HF.
As I said about my ideal day, what energises me most is being able to look back at the end of the day knowing that I have achieved my goals.
Seeing what I regard as best practices being adopted by others in the team is very satisfying as we move as one team to a collective goal.
Don’t be hard on yourself. I can be my own worst enemy and there are times, even when you have done everything right that people are still not happy. You can’t keep everyone happy all the time so knowing within yourself that you have done the job right is a life skill that is invaluable. That is what I would pass on as advice to a younger self.
I am very proud of the position in am in on both fronts. I am proud to be working here at HF, especially considering their reputation in the industry and I am a proud family man. My wife and I have been married for 30 years and have 2 wonderful daughters that I am incredibly proud of. I don’t have a ‘fifteen minutes of fame’ but having what I have both professionally and personally gives me pride.
At HF Comms, the people within the company are our greatest asset. We like to put people first because we are at our strongest and most effective when we respect, value, and collaborate together as one team.
There are few areas of industry as fast-moving as the Communications sector. Certainly, there are few as competitive and we are proud to have a such a talented team behind us and are thrilled to have Colin join us as we move forwards.
If you would like to know more about what we do at HF Comms or have a particular project requirement that we can fulfil, please get in touch. In the Mobile telecommunications industry we meet new challenges every day and have a reputation within the industry to provide solutions to those challenges and apply a can do attitude to obtain positive outcomes for our customers. As an accredited ISO company we have the processes in place to meet customer demands.
At HF, safety is not just a priority; it’s one of our core values. We understand that the well-being of our workforce is paramount, and we strive to create a culture where safety is second nature. This month, we are focusing on the critical issue of driving distractions, underscoring its significance for our team both on the job and off the job.
Distracted driving has become a leading cause of road accidents, resulting in countless injuries and fatalities each year. Distractions can come in many forms, including visual distractions that take your eyes off the road, manual distractions that cause you to take your hands off the wheel and cognitive distractions where you take your mind off driving.
Each type of distraction is dangerous, and combined, they can be deadly. Common distractions include using mobile phones, eating, adjusting the radio, and even engaging in intense conversations with passengers.
Our workforce is the backbone of the company and their safety is integral to our success. Driving distractions pose a significant risk not only to individual employees but also to the broader community. Whether commuting to work, traveling between sites, or running personal errands, the importance of focused driving cannot be overstated.
We have embedded safety into every aspect of our operations. Our commitment to safety is reflected in our comprehensive training programs, strict adherence to safety protocols, and a culture that encourages vigilance and responsibility.
To reinforce our dedication to safe driving, this month we are looking to remind our team of the dangers of distractions behind the wheel.
We will be sending our employees tool talks about the dangers of distracted driving and strategies to avoid distractions and are updating our driving policies to include stricter guidelines on mobile phone usage and other common distractions.
We encourage all employees to take our safe driving pledge, committing to remain distraction-free while behind the wheel and hope that regular reminders and tips shared through our internal communications channels will keep the importance of focused driving top of mind.
Safety is a shared responsibility. Individually and collectively, we are all responsible. And that is why we believe that by working together and supporting each other, we can create a safer environment for everyone. Avoiding distractions while driving is a simple yet powerful way to protect ourselves, our colleagues, and our communities.
As we highlight the importance of driving without distractions this month, let us all recommit to our core value of safety. By staying focused and vigilant on the road, we can prevent accidents and ensure that every journey ends safely.
Together, we can make a difference. Let’s drive distraction-free and continue to uphold the high standards of safety that define HF Group.

For businesses in the UK who rely heavily on electronic systems and equipment, protecting these electrical assets is paramount. Surge protection devices (SPDs) are critical components in safeguarding these assets from electrical surges that can cause significant damage. As one of the leading electrical testing contractors in the UK, we are huge fans of Surge Protection Devices and recognise their vast importance in protecting electrical equipment. But what are SPDs? How do they function and why they are indispensable for businesses?
A surge protection device, also known as a transient voltage surge suppressor, is designed to protect electrical equipment from voltage spikes. These spikes, or surges, are brief overvoltage events that can damage or destroy electronic circuits. SPDs work by diverting the excess voltage to the ground, thus preventing it from reaching and harming connected devices.
Electrical surges can originate from various sources:
Lightning Strikes: Direct or indirect lightning strikes can induce high voltage surges in power lines and electrical installations.
Power Line Disturbances: Fluctuations in the power supply, such as those caused by switching operations in the grid, can lead to surges.
Electromagnetic Interference: Nearby industrial equipment or large motors starting and stopping can induce transient surges.
Internal Sources: Everyday operations within a business, like turning on or off large appliances, can generate surges that affect sensitive equipment.
SPDs are installed at various points in an electrical system to intercept and neutralise voltage spikes. They typically consist of metal oxide varistors (MOVs), gas discharge tubes (GDTs), or a combination of components that absorb and dissipate the excess energy.
They have different stages of operation:
Normal Operation: Under normal voltage conditions, SPDs remain inactive, allowing the electrical current to pass through without interference.
During a Surge: When a surge occurs, the SPD activates, redirecting the excess voltage away from the protected equipment and grounding it safely.
Post-Surge: Once the surge is mitigated, the SPD resets to its normal state, ready to respond to future surges.
Modern businesses rely on sensitive electronic equipment, from computers and servers to communication systems and industrial machinery. Surges can damage these assets, leading to costly repairs or replacements. Equipment failure due to surges can result in significant operational downtime. For businesses, this translates to lost productivity and potential revenue losses. Many businesses store critical data on electronic systems. Surges can corrupt data, leading to loss of valuable information and compromising business continuity. Electrical surges can pose fire hazards, especially if they cause overheating or explosions in electrical equipment. SPDs help mitigate these risks, ensuring a safer working environment.
Investing in SPDs is a cost-effective measure compared to the potential losses incurred from damaged equipment, data loss, and operational downtime. Our electricians will always advise that businesses have suitable surge protection devices installed to protect their vital electronic devices.
SPDs come in various types, each suited to different levels of protection:
Type 1 SPDs: Installed at the main electrical panel, they protect against external surges from lightning or power grid disturbances.
Type 2 SPDs: Positioned at distribution panels, they offer secondary protection to internal circuits.
Type 3 SPDs: Used for point-of-use applications, such as protecting individual devices or appliances.
To effectively protect electrical assets, businesses should adopt a layered approach to surge protection. Our electricians can best advice you on what level of surge protection you need in your business. We begin by evaluating the potential sources of surges and identify critical equipment that needs protection.
Based on the risk assessment, we can install the necessary types of SPDs at key points in the electrical system.
Our electrical testing team can then provide planned inspection services to periodically inspect and maintain SPDs to ensure they are functioning correctly and replace them if they show signs of wear or damage.
As part of our services, we always ensure to educate employees of a business about the importance of surge protection and proper use of electrical equipment to prevent unnecessary surges.
We live in an age where electronic systems are the backbone of business operations. Surge protection devices are not just a luxury but a necessity. They provide a crucial defence against electrical surges that can cause extensive damage, ensuring the longevity, reliability, and safety of electrical assets. By investing in SPDs, businesses can protect themselves from the costly consequences of electrical surges, securing their operations and maintaining business continuity.
With offices in Glasgow, Edinburgh, Manchester, Belfast and Aberdeen, we are well equipped to provide class leading installation services across the whole of the UK.

The advent of 5G technology marks a transformative era in the telecommunications industry, and the United Kingdom stands at the forefront of this revolution. Promising faster speeds, lower latency, and the ability to connect a vast number of devices simultaneously, 5G is reshaping how people communicate, work, and live. We are proud to be a part of this change and have become a key player in the rollout and implementation of 5G infrastructure across the UK.
5G technology is not just an upgrade from 4G; it is a quantum leap that is changing the landscape of communication in unprecedented ways. With speeds up to 100 times faster than 4G, 5G enables near-instantaneous data transfer, which is crucial for applications ranging from streaming high-definition video to real-time telemedicine and autonomous vehicles.
One of the most significant impacts of 5G is its ability to support the Internet of Things (IoT) on a massive scale. This allows for the connection of millions of devices, from smart home systems to industrial sensors, facilitating seamless communication between them. This connectivity is expected to revolutionise industries, from healthcare to manufacturing, making processes more efficient and driving innovation.
Moreover, 5G’s low latency, which can be as little as one millisecond, is a game-changer for applications requiring real-time responses, such as virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR). This opens up new possibilities for remote work, education, and entertainment, allowing for immersive experiences that were previously impossible.
We have become instrumental in bringing 5G technology to the UK, playing a critical role in both the infrastructure development and the widespread deployment of this next-generation network. With years of experience in the telecommunications industry, we have leveraged our expertise to overcome the significant challenges associated with rolling out 5G.
The deployment of 5G requires a dense network of small cell sites and new antennae, often in urban areas where space and planning permissions can be challenging. We have been at the forefront of addressing these challenges, working closely with local authorities, regulators, and communities to ensure that the infrastructure is implemented efficiently and with minimal disruption.
We have also been pivotal in ensuring that the 5G network is robust and reliable. By focusing on building a resilient infrastructure, are helping to mitigate some of the early challenges of 5G, such as signal interference and network stability. Our expertise in network design and deployment has ensured that the UK’s 5G network is among the best in the world, capable of supporting the demands of today and the innovations of tomorrow.
The rollout of 5G across the UK is not just about faster internet speeds; it is about creating a digital infrastructure that will drive economic growth and social change. By enabling new technologies and services, 5G is expected to contribute significantly to the UK economy, with estimates suggesting it could add £150 billion by 2025.
For businesses, 5G opens up new opportunities for innovation, particularly in industries such as manufacturing, logistics, and healthcare. The ability to deploy IoT devices at scale and use data in real-time is set to transform these sectors, making them more efficient and competitive on a global scale.
For consumers, 5G will enhance everyday experiences, from seamless video streaming to smarter homes and cities. It will also pave the way for new forms of entertainment and communication as the world of tomorrow truly becomes the world of today.
As 5G continues to roll out across the UK, it is clear that this technology is more than just an evolution of mobile networks; it is a revolution that will change how we communicate, work, and live. HF Comms has been at the heart of this transformation, ensuring that the UK is not just keeping up with global advancements in telecommunications but leading the way. Through our efforts and those of our partners, the UK is poised to fully realize the potential of 5G, driving economic growth, fostering innovation, and improving the quality of life for everyone.
Electrical testing is a critical aspect of ensuring the safety, reliability, and efficiency of electrical systems. Whether it’s in residential, commercial, or industrial settings, the quality of electrical testing can have far-reaching implications. While it might be tempting to cut corners and reduce costs by opting for cheaper methods, the long-term consequences of such decisions can be disastrous. At HF, we have always put a firm focus on delivering high quality electrical testing so we feel it is important to continually stress why quality matters in electrical testing and the risks associated with subpar practices.
The foremost reason why quality in electrical testing is non-negotiable is safety. As one of our core company values, we take safety very seriously. Electrical systems are inherently dangerous, and poor testing can lead to significant hazards, including:
Quality electrical testing ensures the reliability and performance of electrical systems. Here’s how:
While it might seem cost-effective to opt for cheaper electrical testing methods, the long-term economic implications of this decision can be severe:
The field of electrical testing has seen significant advancements, and keeping up with these technologies requires a commitment to quality. Advanced testing techniques and equipment offer more accurate, efficient, and comprehensive assessments:
For businesses, reputation and trust are invaluable assets. Quality electrical testing plays a crucial role in building and maintaining this trust:
There have been several high-profile industrial accidents attributed to poor electrical testing and maintenance yet too many businesses don’t understand the serious risks of inadequate electrical testing. Investigations into building fires often reveal that substandard electrical testing and maintenance were contributing factors. Ensuring quality testing could have prevented these tragedies.
Quality matters in electrical testing for numerous compelling reasons, from ensuring safety and reliability to optimizing performance and maintaining economic viability. While cheaper methods may offer short-term savings, the long-term risks and costs far outweigh these benefits. Investing in high-quality electrical testing is not just a matter of compliance and best practice; it is a fundamental aspect of responsible management and operational excellence. In an industry where the stakes are high, cutting corners is simply not an option.
At HF, we provide Periodic Inspection and Testing services across the UK. All our testing and inspection services are offered with required certification for fixed wiring in line with our NICEIC regulations.

HF have been a proud sponsor of the Glasgow Warriors since 2016 and we are ecstatic to share in the joy of this outstanding achievement. Our partnership goes beyond that of a sponsor of the club and we are proud to provide a number of our services to the club as well. Which is why, every month, we focus on a main safety concern topic to raise awareness within the company and help to increase safety standards across the brand. In July, we are focussing on on-site safety.
Recognising the potential hazards our team encounters daily, we are focusing on critical areas such as manual handling, asbestos exposure, and working at height. This initiative is designed to ensure that our workforce is equipped with the knowledge and tools needed to maintain a safe working environment.
A cornerstone of our safety campaign is the rigorous conduct of risk assessments. These assessments are pivotal in identifying potential hazards and implementing measures to mitigate them. By systematically evaluating each job site, we can pinpoint specific dangers associated with manual handling, asbestos, and working at height, and develop tailored strategies to address them.
Manual handling tasks, often involving lifting, carrying, and moving heavy objects, are common in the work our electricians, plumbers, gas engineers, fire & security team, comms riggers and control installers carry out. To reduce the risk of injury, we emphasise proper lifting techniques and the use of mechanical aids where possible. Our training programs include practical demonstrations and hands-on practice to ensure that all employees are proficient in safe manual handling practices.
Given the serious health risks posed by asbestos exposure, asbestos awareness gets highlighted on a regular basis, both as a standalone topic and as part of things like day to day on-site safety. We have implemented strict protocols for any work that might disturb asbestos-containing materials and our team members are trained to recognise asbestos hazards and follow proper procedures, including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and containment measures, to minimise the risks of exposure. Regular toolbox talks by our health and safety team also help to reinforce these protocols, ensuring that safety is always front and centre in peoples minds.
Working at height presents significant risks, and we are committed to reducing these through comprehensive safety measures. We provide specialised training programs that cover the use of fall protection equipment, safe ladder usage, and scaffold safety. Additionally, our risk assessments ensure that appropriate fall prevention systems are in place before any work at height begins.
At HF, safety is an ongoing priority. Our monthly safety topics are part of a broader commitment to continuous improvement in workplace safety. We conduct regular toolbox talks, providing an open forum for discussing safety concerns and sharing best practices. Our training programs are continually updated to incorporate the latest safety standards and innovations.
Moreover, we ensure that all team members have access to the necessary PPE and that it is used correctly. From hard hats and safety glasses to harnesses and respirators, the right equipment is essential for protecting our workers from harm.
By highlighting on-site safety and addressing the specific risks associated with manual handling, asbestos, and working at height, we empower our team to take an active role in their own safety. We believe that a well-informed and well-equipped workforce is the best defence against workplace injuries and illnesses.
We are proud of our proactive approach to safety and our commitment to fostering a culture where every team member feels responsible for maintaining a safe working environment. Together, we can achieve our goal of zero incidents and ensure that everyone goes home safe at the end of each day.

In response to the rising concerns about vaping among students, we are now able to offer the installation of state-of-the-art anti-vape smoke detectors. These detectors are specifically designed to address the vaping epidemic in schools and other educational facilities across the UK, offering a proactive solution to a growing problem.
Vaping has become a widespread issue in educational institutions across the UK. With sleek, easily concealable devices, students are able to vape undetected, leading to health risks and disciplinary challenges for school administrators. The presence of vaping in schools not only disrupts the learning environment but also poses serious health risks, including nicotine addiction and exposure to harmful chemicals.
Anti-vape smoke detectors employ cutting-edge technology to identify the distinct chemical signatures of vape smoke. Unlike traditional smoke detectors, which are designed to detect particles from burning materials, these specialised detectors are calibrated to sense the unique emissions from e-cigarettes and vape pens. This precision ensures that the detectors can effectively differentiate between vape smoke and other harmless activities.
High Sensitivity and Accuracy: The detectors are engineered to detect even the smallest traces of vape smoke, ensuring immediate identification and response.
Real-Time Alerts: Once vape smoke is detected, the system sends real-time alerts to designated personnel via app. This immediate notification allows for swift action to address the situation.
Discreet and Unobtrusive: The detectors are designed to blend seamlessly into the school environment, maintaining the aesthetic integrity of the facilities while providing robust monitoring capabilities.
Easy Integration: Anti-vape smoke detectors can be easily integrated into existing security and fire alarm systems, making the upgrade process straightforward and cost-effective.
We offer comprehensive installation services, ensuring that the detectors are strategically placed for maximum coverage. Our team of experienced fire and security engineers conducts thorough site assessments to identify high-risk areas such as restrooms, locker rooms, and other secluded spots where students are likely to vape.
In addition to installation, we provide ongoing support and maintenance services for school staff to effectively use and manage the anti-vape detection system.
By introducing anti-vape smoke detectors, this innovative solution not only helps schools maintain a vape-free environment but also supports broader efforts to promote healthy lifestyles and prevent nicotine addiction among young people.
As vaping continues to pose a significant challenge in educational settings, anti-vape smoke detectors represent a timely and effective intervention. Schools and other educational facilities now have access to advanced technology that can help curb this troubling trend, ensuring a safer, healthier environment for students to learn and grow.

In commemoration of Global Asbestos Week, it is important to remind everyone of the grave dangers posed by asbestos exposure and the critical importance of adopting proper safety measures. This annual event serves as a poignant reminder of the devastating health impacts associated with asbestos and the urgent need for heightened awareness and action to mitigate its risks.
With Safety being one of our four core values, it is our duty to keep our team safe when working on site carrying out electrical, mechanical, fire & security, comms and automated controls services and we want to highlight both the risks and companies responsibilities when dealing with asbestos.
Asbestos, once hailed as a miracle material for its fire-resistant and insulating properties, has since been unequivocally linked to serious health conditions, including mesothelioma, lung cancer, and asbestosis. While the use of blue and brown asbestos was banned in 1985 and white asbestos was banned in 1999, there are still a large number of premises across the UK that contain some form of asbestos as well as numerous older buildings, industrial facilities, and even consumer products, posing an ongoing threat to public health.
Around 5,000 people die every year from asbestos-related diseases which typically take decades to develop and cannot be cured. It is made up of tiny, invisible fibres that can be breathed in or rest on your clothes.
For businesses and organisations across the UK, conducting comprehensive asbestos surveys is imperative to identify and manage asbestos-containing materials (ACMs) within their premises. These surveys involve thorough inspections and sampling to assess the presence, condition, and extent of asbestos in buildings or facilities. By conducting regular surveys and implementing appropriate management plans, companies can safeguard the health and well-being of their employees, clients, and the wider community.
Compliance with regulations and guidelines governing asbestos management is not only a legal obligation but also a moral responsibility. Failing to address asbestos hazards can lead to costly litigation, reputational damage, and, most importantly, unnecessary harm to human lives.
Asbestos remains a persistent threat, particularly in older structures and industrial settings.
During Global Asbestos Awareness Week, we want to renew our commitment to raising awareness, promoting best practices, and advocating for a safer, asbestos-free future. By working together with our clients and taking decisive action, we can mitigate the risks associated with asbestos exposure and protect the health and well-being of both our employees and those working at our clients premises.
Remember, when it comes to asbestos, prevention is paramount. Wear your PPE, conduct surveys diligently, and prioritise safety above all else.
Stay safe. Stay asbestos-aware.

Our engineers have first-hand knowledge of all projects and vast experience of multi-discipline works. It all adds up to a service fully focused on protection and delivery your requirements on time and on budget – because anything else, quite simply, won’t do.
Safety is always our priority. Individually and collectively, we are all responsible. And with so many engineers driving across the UK, we have taken another proactive step towards ensuring the well-being of our workforce.
With out commitment to safety, the company has provided all its engineers with tyre tread depth measuring keyrings. They may not be the fanciest thing in the world but they will allow our engineers to more frequently check the tread depth on their vehicles tyres which can only be looked at as a positive towards increased safety for our team.
Safety is non-negotiable at HF, and it is deeply ingrained in the company’s culture. Recognising that even the smallest oversight can have significant repercussions, we continually seeks ways to enhance safety measures. The provision of tyre tread depth measuring is a reflection of this ethos. By equipping engineers with this simple yet effective tool, we aim to address a crucial aspect of vehicle safety – tyre condition.
Tyre tread depth is a critical factor in ensuring roadworthiness and safe vehicle operation. Worn-out tyres not only compromise vehicle performance but also increase the risk of accidents, particularly in adverse weather conditions. With these tyre tread depth measures, our engineers can now conduct quick and accurate assessments of tyre condition, enabling them to identify potential safety hazards before they escalate.
Moreover, this initiative aligns with our broader commitment to sustainability and corporate social responsibility. By promoting proactive maintenance practices, such as regular tyre inspections, the company not only enhances safety but also contributes to reducing environmental impact. Properly maintained tyres last longer, resulting in fewer replacements and, consequently, reduced waste generation.
The decision to provide tyre tread depth measuring keyrings also reflects our investment in employee well-being. By empowering engineers with the tools they need to perform their jobs safely, we believe we are fostering a culture of safety that instils confidence among employees, leading to greater job satisfaction and productivity.
Looking ahead, we remain committed to upholding our core values, with safety continuing to be a top priority. The provision of tyre tread depth measures is just one example of our proactive steps to safety management. As we continue to uphold our core values, safety will remain a cornerstone of our success, driving excellence and inspiring confidence in everything we do.
Electrical installations are the backbone of modern infrastructure, powering homes, businesses, and industries across the United Kingdom. From lighting up our homes to enabling the operation of complex machinery in factories, electrical installations play a crucial role in our daily lives. As one of the oldest electrical contractors in the UK, we wanted to explore what is involved in electrical installations in the UK, covering regulations, components, safety measures, and the role of qualified electricians.
In the UK, electrical installations are governed by strict regulations and standards to ensure safety and compliance. The most prominent regulation is the Wiring Regulations, formally known as BS 7671: Requirements for Electrical Installations. This standard outlines the requirements for the design, installation, and maintenance of electrical systems to protect against electric shock, fire hazards, and other potential dangers.
Additionally, electrical installations must comply with regulations set forth by organisations such as the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) and the Health and Safety Executive (HSE). These regulations are periodically updated to incorporate technological advancements and enhance safety standards.
Electrical installations consist of various components that work together to distribute power effectively and safely. Some key components include:
Consumer Unit: Also known as a fuse box or distribution board, the consumer unit controls the distribution of electricity throughout a building. It contains circuit breakers or fuses that trip in case of overload or fault, protecting the wiring and appliances.
Wiring: Electrical wiring consists of conductors that carry electricity from the consumer unit to outlets, switches, and appliances. Common types of wiring include PVC-insulated cables for domestic installations and armoured cables for industrial settings.
Switches and Socket-Outlets: Switches control the flow of electricity to lighting fixtures and appliances, while sockets provide power for devices. These components come in various types and designs to suit different applications and aesthetic preferences.
Lighting Fixtures: Energy-efficient LED lighting is now the norm for electrical installations and lighting fixtures which illuminate homes, offices, and outdoor spaces. Proper installation ensures optimal performance and energy efficiency.
Earthing and Bonding: Earthing and bonding systems provide a path for electrical fault currents to safely dissipate into the ground, reducing the risk of electric shock and fire.
Safety is paramount in electrical installations, and adherence to safety measures is non-negotiable. At HF, we take it so seriously that it is the first of our four core company values. Only qualified and competent electricians should carry out electrical installations. As NICEIC accredited electricians, we possess the necessary knowledge, skills, and certifications to ensure installations comply with regulations and standards.
While electrical installations ensure that all electrical components are installed and fitted correctly, regular inspection and testing of electrical installations help identify potential hazards, faults, or deteriorations that could compromise safety. This Periodic Inspection and Testing process involves visual inspections, electrical testing, and certification by our electricians.
All components and materials used in electrical installations must meet relevant British Standards and carry appropriate certifications. We ensure that all components and materials meet current compliance with Wiring Regulations and other relevant standards as this is essential to ensure the safety and integrity of electrical installations for our customers.
Electrical installations in the UK are complex undertakings that require meticulous planning, adherence to regulations, and a commitment to safety. Whether it’s wiring a new office, upgrading an industrial facility, or installing lighting in a commercial space, our professional electricians play a vital role in ensuring that installations are safe, reliable, and compliant with current standards.
We are NICEIC and Select Approved Electrical Contractors providing Manned electrical 24 hour Call-out Service nationwide and are the first choice for some of the country’s leading businesses when it comes to electrical services.
From Electrical Installations to Planned Maintenance Contracts, quality service and peace of mind are the principles on which the Fulton family founded the company as electrical contractors all those years ago, and it’s just as important today.
While HF has grown from our humble roots as a local electrician in Glasgow, our unique combination of family continuity, in-depth business and technical knowledge while investing in the recruitment and development of the very best skillsets, means that our customers still benefit from the highest possible standards of electrical service and delivery – the hallmark of HF since its inception.
With an approach which combines traditional values with innovative thinking, we know that for our customers, a faulty light switch requires the same level of service and professionalism as a multi-million pound electrical installation project. Which is why we continue to deliver time and time again for our customers across the UK who are looking for an electrical contractor that can deliver on jobs big and small.
As we celebrate International Women’s Day, it’s imperative to reflect on the strides made towards gender equality and acknowledge the vital contributions of women across all industries. At HF Group, we take great pride in our commitment to diversity and inclusivity, particularly in the traditionally male-dominated fields that we provide our range of services in including electricians, plumbers and security engineers. As we embrace the theme of this year’s International Women’s Day, “Inspire Inclusion” we highlight the remarkable women who challenge stereotypes and excel in their roles within our company.
At HF, we firmly believe that talent knows no gender. Our dedication to fostering an inclusive work environment has enabled us to attract and retain a diverse workforce, including many talented women. From the boardroom to the construction site, women play integral roles in driving our company’s success.
In line with our company tagline, “A Company Well Connected” our commitment to connectivity extends beyond telecommunications infrastructure to include the connections we forge with our employees. We recognise the importance of providing equal opportunities for women in every aspect of our operations, including technical and hands-on roles. Female electricians, plumbers, telecommunication designers, and other professionals are not just welcomed at HF Group—they are celebrated and valued for their unique perspectives and contributions.
Our female electricians bring precision and expertise to every project they undertake, ensuring that our clients receive top-notch service and solutions while our female telecommunication designers contribute innovative ideas to enhance connectivity solutions for our clients.
By embracing and empowering female professionals, we not only enrich our workforce but also set a positive example for the entire industry. We understand that diversity drives innovation and fosters creativity, leading to better outcomes for our clients and communities.
On this International Women’s Day, we reaffirm our commitment to championing gender equality and creating an inclusive workplace where all individuals can thrive and succeed. We celebrate the achievements of women at HF and beyond, recognising their invaluable contributions to our company’s growth and success.

As we continue to strive for progress and equality, let us choose to challenge outdated norms and create a future where women have equal opportunities to pursue their passions and excel in any field they choose. Together, we can build a more inclusive and equitable world for generations to come.
Happy International Women’s Day from all of us at HF Group!
The remarkable fundraising efforts, spearheaded by Andy McKay in support of the British Heart Foundation have helped to raise a lot of money over the weekend and we are delighted that so many within the HF team helped out. Raising over six hundreds of pounds on Friday alone with many donating their time to helping collect money on the Saturday at Ibrox as well. But it wasn’t just coins that were collected on Saturday, Rangers Football Club also helped out, donating £25,000 to the charity fundraising efforts.
The funds raised over the Friday & Saturday will play a pivotal role in advancing the British Heart Foundation’s mission to fund life-saving research, provide support to those affected by heart disease, and educate communities about cardiovascular health. Every pound collected will contribute towards innovative research projects, pioneering treatments, and initiatives aimed at improving heart health outcomes for all.
This is just one of many fundraising initiatives that Andy has helped organise over the years. From charity walks to golf days, Andy has helped to raise literally hundreds of thousands of pounds for the charity and we are proud to have supported him through all of his fundraising activities.
At HF, we put people first. We are at our strongest and most effective when we respect, value, and collaborate together. We are one team.
Congratulations to everyone who donated money and helped out with raising even more money for a truly great cause.
Consistency and excellence are paramount to what we do at HF. So it is with great pleasure that we announce the successful passing of our Glasgow branch in our recent NICEIC assessments. Once again, our team has showcased their expertise, dedication, and commitment to delivering top-notch service in every project we undertake.
The National Inspection Council for Electrical Installation Contracting (NICEIC) assessments are renowned for their rigorous standards and stringent evaluation criteria. Passing these assessments is not merely an achievement; it’s a testament to our unwavering pursuit of excellence and adherence to the highest industry standards.
At HF, we understand the significance of maintaining compliance and upholding quality benchmarks in every aspect of our operations. The successful outcome of the assessments underscores our commitment to safety, reliability, and professionalism.
With such a rich history as an electrical contractor in the UK, our Glasgow branch (as is the case with all of our branches nationwide) has consistently demonstrated its prowess in electrical installations, repairs, and maintenance services. Through meticulous attention to detail, technical proficiency, and a customer-centric approach, our team has earned a reputation for excellence in business sectors ranging from hospitality to industrial, retail and education.
This achievement wouldn’t have been possible without the dedication and expertise of our talented workforce. Their collective efforts, coupled with our robust management practices and adherence to regulatory requirements is what has allowed us to yet again, successfully pass our NICEIC inspections.
As we celebrate this milestone, we extend our gratitude to our valued clients, partners, and stakeholders for their support and trust in our capabilities. The success of our Glasgow branch in the NICEIC assessments reaffirms our position as a leading electrical contractor in the UK and we are poised to build upon this success and reach new heights in the future.
