Interconnected Smoke Alarms are coming

From February 2022, new Government legislation relating to fire and smoke alarms will come into play across Scotland.

The new standards require the following:

interlinked smoke alarm fitters

What makes the rule very important is that all of these alarms must be ceiling mounted and interconnected or interlinked.

This new rule will cover all homes in Scotland and it is the responsibility of the homeowner themselves to meet these new standards.

The new legislation has come into effect because of the tragic fire at Grenfell Tower in London. Originally due to come into force in 2020, it was delayed because of the Coronavirus Pandemic.

Homeowners who do not have interlinked fire and smoke alarms fitted after this date and who then suffer from a fire in their home may see their insurance cover rejected. This is an incredibly important new piece of legislation.

At HF Fire & Security, we can provide a complete installation and updating of your existing fire and smoke alarm systems to meet the new standards.

5 signs that you need to call an electrician

As one of the oldest electrical contractors in the UK, we have seen pretty much everything when it comes to electrical work in the commercial sector.

And here are 5 of the most common signs that you may need to call us for electrical repairs.

1 -The Smell of Burning / Unusual Smells

It may come from outlets, switches or around electrical powered equipment such as office computers and production equipment. The unusual smell may be electrical based and you should call our commercial and industrial electrical team to investigate.

2 – Flickering Lights

While the most common cause of a flickering light is the light bulb, if you have replaced it and the light is still flickering then it could be a sign that the electrical wiring in your facility has a problem.

3 – Unusual Sounds

If you can hear unusual sounds coming from electrical appliances, plug sockets, lights and switches, it may be a cause of faulty, damaged or worn out wiring. Hissing and clicking sounds are the most common and you should call our 24/7 call out team to investigate.

4 – Blown Breakers / Fuses

The electrical demands on commercial facilities is always growing. In a hotel for example, the need to power laptops, mobile phones, TV’s, hair dryers, showers and so much more can put a strain on the electrical demands of the buildings electrical supply. If you are finding that the breakers cannot handle the electrical load of your commercial premises then our electrical contractor team can install a new more powerful system to handle the demands.

5 – Electrical Shocks

With the number of safety features integrated into every day life, if you receive an electrical shock from a switch then this is a serious safety hazard and needs to be dealt with immediately. In most cases, it will be a simple re-wiring issue but needs to be dealt with asap.

There are some business decisions where peace of mind is essential. That’s the principle on which the Fulton family founded the company and its electrical services all those years ago, and it’s just as important today.

When problems occur, time is money, so it’s paramount to minimise any downtime. This means ensuring our task force of our 300+ staff have the very best skills and resources, literally at their fingertips. With this in mind HF has over the years made large-scale investments in technology. Now, a co-ordinated electronic diary, linked by GPS satellite signals to our operatives, ensures we are able to provide the most efficient and responsive service possible, whether on planned or emergency call-outs. By identifying the exact locations of our engineers, we can provide accurate estimated times of arrival, eliminating unnecessary stress and cost.

If you would like to know more about our Electrical Services, examples of the work we have done in this sector or if you have any questions about our commercial or industrial electrical services that you are looking for, please call 0800 783 9480 or email info@hf-group.co.uk. We look forward to hearing from you soon.

How can my business benefit from installing EV charge points?

With Electric Vehicles stamping their authority as the future of transportation on the roads of Great Britain, now is the time to look at installing EV charging points at your business location.

By installing commercial EV charge points, you will be meeting the demands placed on your business from customers and your employees who use Electric Vehicles to commute and travel to your business location. But it is easy to simply say that installing EV charging points are a good idea. But what are the real benefits if installing them on your commercial property?

1 – Future proofing your business

With tax and financial benefits helping to influence those considering switching to Electric Vehicles, installing electric car charging points now is a smart way of future proofing your business whether it is for the vehicles you provide your staff or for the personal transport choices of your employees. Soon, charging points will become the norm and those businesses that are early adopters will benefit from that forward thinking decision to have charging points installed early.

2 – It fulfils a demand to provide essential business facilities

As more of your employees switch to electric vehicles, having the ability to offer this feature to staff, clients etc will create a business premises better fit for purpose.

3 – Increased foot traffic from potential customers

Businesses that require foot traffic to enter their showroom can greatly benefit from electric charging points. The presence of EV charging points can make your store a convenient place for customers to charge their vehicle while ‘browsing’. This can then convert potential sales into increased revenue.

4 – Marketing your brands eco credentials

By promoting EV charging and the use of electric vehicles over fossil fuel powered vehicles, you can market your business as an eco friendly and focussed brand. This can help to attract both customers and top employees who are looking for lifestyle convenience.

Can I charge an electric vehicle with a regular plug outlet?

With a growing list of benefits, longer range and a greater range of options on the market, electric vehicles are becoming a popular alternative to fossil fuelled cars on the road. But with such a new technology, there is understandably some questions that potential buyers may have about charging an electric vehicle after so many years of simply filling up at the pumps.

Can I charge my EV at home?

Yes you can. If you have a driveway, garage or parking slot with permission to install an Electric Vehicle Charging Point then the easiest way to charge an EV is at home. You can also use the traditional three-pin socket to charge your vehicle.

How fast does an EV charge with a 3-pin socket

Your plugs at home are deemed as ‘slow chargers’. It can take around 30 hours to fully charge a modern electric car from empty to full using a 3-pin plug. Most car manufacturers recommend a three-pin socket method of charging as the last resort.

How can I connect my car to a 3-pin plug?

Whether you run a cable through an open window (which can create a security risk for your home) or you install a dedicated weatherproof socket outside, a 3-pin plug option is the cheapest way to charge an EV.

If you are renting a property or do not have access to private parking to install an EV charing point then 3-pin sockets may be your only option. However adding a correctly fitted charging point to your home can add value to the property.

Is buying an electric car worth it?

ev charging system grants

The personal and commercial transportation industry is changing faster than ever and with the advancements in electric vehicle range, charging times and costs, it is understandable that so many motorists are now looking to turn to electric vehicles are their primary source of transportation.

But is it worth buying an electric vehicle?  And what are the pros and cons?

There are three primary types of electric vehicle in the marketplace right now.

Battery Electric Vehicles – EV

Plug-in Electric Vehicle – PHEV

Hybrid Electric Vehicle – HEV

An EV is purely electric.  It has a battery and an electric motor and that is that.  A PHEV has an electric motor and a normal fossil fuel powered engine.  The petrol or diesel engine is used to provide more power and travel range when required.  An HEV has regenerative braking systems to help recharge the battery.  HEV switches between Battery and fossil fuel depending on the usage.

As it is looking more and more likely, EV will become the primary source of power for vehicles going forwards as PHEV and HEV have limited long term viability and the UK Government look to remove Petrol and Diesel powered vehicles from our roads over the next decades.

Electric Vehicle Range

With Electric Vehicles, one of the biggest concerns is range.  Many potential converters to battery powered vehicles worry that they will run out of charge in the middle of nowhere.  And if you have ever run out of battery on your phone, you will understand how frustrating having no juice when you need it can be.  The latest EV models have a range of around 200 miles depending on a variety of factors from outside temperature to how you drive and even if you have the air con on. So if you regularly need to travel 201 miles in a single journey then Electric Vehicles may not be suitable for you (just yet). The average commute round trip is 23 miles while the distance for some of the longer work day commutes in the UK is around 40 – 45 miles.  So most drivers could go pretty much an entire week on a single charge.  But with vehicle charging points in your driveway or garage, you could charge your car up every night while you sleep.

Battery Lifespan

Another concern for vehicle owners is the lifespan of the battery.  Manufacturers are introducing (or have already rolled out) comprehensive warranty plans for the batteries of their latest EV models.  Some of the more impressive warranties cover up to 100,000 miles and eight years.

Considering the average car owner keeps their car for 4 years – this level of warranty is designed to give you peace of mind.  An electric car battery will likely exceed the lifespan of the vehicle itself.

What are batteries made from

Most Electric Vehicle batteries are lithium based constructions.  This is currently the best method of rechargeable battery for long life and consistent output.

The cost of charging an electric vehicle

To charge an electric vehicle at home costs on average £9.20.  By charging your electric car overnight, you can keep your car fully charged should you suddenly need to drive long distance. An average domestic electricity rate in the UK is around 17p per kWh though energy prices are constantly fluctuating.

Overall review of electric vehicles

If you require a car for shorter, regular commutes to work and have easy access to charging stations or have a private garage, driveway or parking space that allows electric vehicle charging points to be fitted then switching to an electric vehicle is a sensible consideration.

Did you know?

There are currently incentive grants available for both domestic and commercial use that can lower the up front costs of installing an EV Charge Point?

Find out if you are eligible. All you have to do is answer a couple of simple questions.

Why is overnight charging cheaper?

For those that have invested in a home charging system for their electric vehicle or for those who are considering making the switch, you may have wondered why charging your electric vehicle overnight is cheaper.

Simply put, it is because demand for electricity is low overnight. The energy running through the electric grid becomes cheaper to purchase during the night because of this.

Using electricity to charge your electric vehicle overnight is also greener.  This is not because of high winds at night blowing wind turbines but because along with the lower demand levels during the night, there is less demand for carbon heavy methods of electricity generation such as gas or coal.

ev charging system grants

Peak electricity use is around 5pm in the evening and the Winter is unsurprisingly when we rely on electricity the most.

Is there any other option for keeping EV charging costs down?

Yes there is.  While Electric Vehicles are a relatively new feature on the driveways of peoples homes, we already have lots of data that can be used to help maximise range and keep charging costs low, including:

Avoid running your EV car battery down past 20% remaining.  The first and last 20% of electric vehicle charging takes the most energy. If you were incredibly keen on reducing costs then you can stop charging your EV beyond 80% though there are some who will simply need the extra range that a fully charged electric car battery can offer.

Use free charging stations.  As more and more supermarkets, commercial stores and shopping centres offer electric vehicle charging points, the opportunity to access free electricity to charge your car is becoming easier.  If you were, for example, shopping for a new sofa, then you could charge your EV while you browse the options at your local Sofa Storeroom (provided that they have an EV Charging Station installed).

Keep your car battery cool. Electric Vehicles use lithium-ion batteries which can become damaged if they overheat.  While we live in the UK, a country not famous for scorching hot weather, even charging your car on a sunny day can cause temperature changes in the battery which can damage it in the long run.  And this can affect charging abilities and therefore the cost of charging an electric vehicle.

Why temperature control is important in Care Homes

Temperature control in Nursing Homes and other facilities providing care is vitally important.

As we age, our skin becomes thinner and therefore more susceptible to the cold.  A degree or two temperature change in a room is far more easily detected because of this.  Which is why proper temperature control is so vital in care or nursing homes looking to create a comfortable environment for its residents.

With a temperature effect being felt more greatly through age, combined with less movement ability that helps to generate body heat (because of arthritis, hip replacements etc), having an effective and reliable heating system for residents of a care home is incredibly important.

If residents of a care home have no control of the temperature and are suffering because of a constant feeling of being cold, this can affect their mood, their health and can cause complaints from relatives.  A lack of control over the temperature of the rooms heating can also lead to a feeling of loss of independence.

The older we get, the more susceptible we are to colds, flu and pneumonia.  Heating systems can help to tackle this.

At HF Group, our Heating division can provide a complete heating system designed for Care Homes and their unique needs.

From industrial heating to plumbing systems, air conditioning installation and servicing to domestic plumbing/heating issues, HF Group specialise in all commercial, retail and domestic plumbing, heating and air conditioning services. It is why our customers come back to us again and again.

With jobs ranging from £50 to £250,000 and beyond, we operate throughout the UK. To discuss your heating needs, please call 0800 783 9480 or email info@hf-group.co.uk.  We look forward to hearing from you soon.

How old is the electrical wiring in your building?

How old is too old? You may know that your properties electrical wiring is dated but how old is it and when does that become too dangerous to leave as it is?

A visual inspection of electrical wiring can help to diagnose the estimated age of your electrical wiring. There are certain tell tale signs from plug socket outlet shapes to how many electrical points there are in a room. An electrical fuse board and the types of fuses used are also good indicators of the electrical age of your properties wiring. But these are all fixed items that can be easily replaced over the years. The big tell tale sign and the most important aspect to check is the electrical cable running behind the walls.

Why is the age of the electrical wiring important?

Safety and regulations are the two main reasons. By knowing the age of your electrical wiring, we can better understand what regulations were in place and which ones weren’t. And from that we can better understand what safety features your property DOES NOT have.

electrical wiring age

How to tell the age of electrical wiring

The first mass produced electrical wiring dates back to around the time of World War I. Paper insulation electrical wiring was the first mass produced type in the UK. Its toxic mix was a health hazard in todays standards and it is very rare to find this type of cabling in UK properties anymore.

1930s – Lead Insulation

Like the paper insulation electrical cabling before it, it is rare to find this type of electrical wiring anymore. Made from a flat lead sheathed cable that had a rubber insulation lining. If you still have this kind of electrical wiring in use in your property today then you should call HF Electrical Contractors for a rewiring service.

1950s – Vulcanised Indian Rubber

VIR or VRI as it was known had the appearance of a red shoelace and can still be found in older buildings across the country. Due to the construction nature of older buildings and modern regulations that require a minimum 40% free space within a cable containment (for heat build up reasons), it can be a challenge to replace this type of electrical cabling. But the waxy cotton material that covers the electrical wiring is brittle and this type of wiring have been sitting there for potentially 70 years. This is still a common type of electrical wiring to be found in UK buildings and from a safety point of view, should be replace.

1960s – Rubber Sheath

One of the first types of electrical cabling to feature an earth wire (CPC), rubber sheath electrical wiring can still be found in many homes in the UK.

1970s – Grey PVC

If you live or work in an older building then there is a very high chance that your electrical supply still flows through this type of electrical wiring. It was the first type of electrical wiring to incorporate a bare CPC conductor that ran through the central cable.

1980s – White PVC

An evolution of the grey PVC wiring from the previous decade, the conductors were made from copper and they were the first cables to use solid cores for wiring up to 2.5mm. This was however the last electrical wiring to use red and black to identify the live and neutral wires.

2004 – Modern PVC

Switching red to brown and black to blue to represent the live and neutral wires was the UK’s way of syncing with Europe and their electrical wiring colour coding. This style of electrical cable is still in use today and is mostly sold in a Grey PVC coated colour.

Congratulations to Margaret for 40 years as part of the HF Family

40 years ago, a special person joined the HF family. That special person is Margaret Cairney

40 years in the HF Family

Hugh M Fulton (1969 – Present) HF Group Chairman

There have been so many plus points that Margaret’s has brought to the party over the period, it is
impossible to remember specifics.

My Sister Joyce and Mags were a great team. The “oops duo” as I used to refer to them. The plus points out weighed the negative by a considerable multiplying factor.

I still miss all the pampering, that she gave clients, but more especially me, serving lunches and tea in a great kindly/efficient manner. She is an absolute one off.

Congratulations to you on this great achievement. Thanks for putting up with me

Hugh R. Fulton (2001 – Present)

As the current Managing Director of HF Group, it is my pleasure to congratulate Margaret on her long service achievement.

Margaret joined HF on the 27th of March 1981 as a sixteen-year-old office Junior. This date is just over 4 months after I was born, so she has been part of the family for as long as I can remember. During this time Margaret has worked for and with three generations of the Fulton Family.

However, my earliest memory that I do know are true is from many moons ago and pre-mobiles phones. Any time my sisters or I needed to speak to our Dad we had to phone Margaret. It was then up to Margaret to decide if the message was urgent or could wait. If we were ever found to be rude to Margaret, we knew all about it when our Dad returned home later that evening.

I am sure Margaret will agree to this day that I am still never rude to her, however not so much because of fear of our now Chairman but because of genuine fear that she might just one day follow through with one of her many famous saying “I’ll burst you”

Long service to a company is a two-way arrangement and it is a source of great pride to me that, Margaret has stayed with HF for four decades.

I can honestly say that there is never a day where Wee Mags will not manage to put a smile on your face and she really such an integral part of our office function.

Thank you, Margaret, for being so loyal and dedicated in everything you do for the sake of the company’s success. We sincerely appreciate your hard work and efforts year after year. Thank you for your many wonderful years of service!”. We are truly happy to have you at HF.

Jill Nicolson (2011 – Present)

Congratulations on reaching the big 4-0. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank you and emphasise how much we all appreciate your 40 years of service.

Growing up you were always the go to friendly face of the office, and continue to be to this day. We’re just grateful you survived the fall down the stairs in Osborne St with the red box.

I fondly remember the summers spent filing the brochures in to the old wooden drawers in the now Comms office and when you took me to The Star Bar for rice and hair pudding! Both Laura and I (and mum!) would have gone many a Valentine’s Day with no cards growing up if it wasn’t for you.

Although some customers may refer to you as the rottweiler, they don’t appreciate how kind and caring you are behind that bark; they just need to ‘keep to their promises!’
Thank you for all your hard work and dedication to the HF family, you have been an invaluable member and we all greatly appreciate it.

Joyce Fulton (1978 – Present)

As you can tell with my start date, I have worked with Margaret for a number of years and over the years our friendship has grown. I have had many a laugh listening to her credit control calls, she is a force to be reckoned with! Persistent is an understatement.

She has been a great worker and like most of us she has made the odd mistake, which made our Chairman invent the “oops book” where he would log any mistakes we made and not let us forget them.
Well done Margaret what a milestone you have reached, keep up the good work.

John A Ferguson (1983 – Present)

Congratulations Margaret, you are an integral player in this team that we know as HF.
Winning work for our business is important for the sales and estimating team, Delivering the work is also important for the engineers but collecting the cash is equally as important as without money we would have no business.

Margaret, you have fulfilled this role now for 40 years, chasing customers, hounding contract managers ensuring cashflow.

Then we have the fun and caring side of Margaret, always collecting for someone else’s Birthday, Baby or special event in their lives.

Always looking for that night out with the Girls or the Christmas Party and looking for that boogie on the dancefloor !

Margaret, we look forward to many more years working with you, enjoy your work anniversary celebrations, albeit not quite in the surroundings that will allow what you would have loved.

Melanie Higgs (1994 – Present)

Working with Margaret or Wee Mags as she is affectionately known, has been a pleasure over the last 27 years and she has now reached 40 years’ service, like most friendships we have had our ups and downs but mainly ups and many fun filled nights out which have resulted in sore heads the following day!
Up until recently Mags dedicated a lot of her personal time to the Rainbow charity spending her free time offering a befriending service to elderly people who lacked companionship, she would take them shopping / out to lunch or even just sit and have a chat with them and when she wasn’t doing that, she was spending time with her 2 daughters and helping to look after her 5 grand kids; this shows her true heart.
On a professional level she has had many a debtor quaking in their boots, in fact, one client sent her a Birthday card with a Rottweiler on the front for fun which she found rather amusing although she is certainly not to be messed with!

For those of you who haven’t heard them direct, here are 2 of Mags’s most used quotes
• Here you! I’ll burst you!!
• Calm your brogues / keep your hair on

One tip though, hide your sweeties and biscuits! one is never enough (oh and your nuts and crisps)

John Balmer (1997 – Present)

Wee Margaret is an HF institution! 40 years! Wow what loyalty and service! She is part of the HF family and is a well-liked and conscientious individual.

She has given her life effort for the business and that loyalty has been reciprocated by the business to her. A very well-liked and respected member of the team who is not afraid of hard work.

Neil Jones (1999 – Present)

‘Margaret is the Mortise & Tenon that holds the Glasgow office together. It should be, Margaret helped build Albert Drive office .

There is no bigger personality in HF than Margaret and I don’t think that can be debated, never change Maggie Mayhem, we all love you & well done on surviving 40years; however, your Parole is denied and you have to stay.

Christopher Lees (2007 – Present)

Margaret never forgets my birthday (mostly because it is the same day as her daughters’) but I like to think it’s because I’m her favourite member of staff. She always enquires after my family because she has a genuine interest (and perhaps a bit of nosiness) in how other people are getting on. Margaret is a permanent and very valued fixture within the HF Team. 40 years at one company is quite something.

Congratulations Margaret. A one-off.

2021 Zoom Party

Greg Madine (1994 – Present)

I don’t have any photographs or anything (cameras were in their infancy ) ……. only memories.
I first met Margaret in 1985 as I started my Electrical apprenticeship with Fulton’s in our old office in
Osborne Street before we moved to Albert Drive.

Every Apprentice had to spend 2 weeks in the office which was your worst nightmare. That is when I first met Margaret. The absolute pummelling, I took for 2 weeks solid…… I thought it was magic.

She tried to set me up with a girl the same age as me and as hard as nails from Milton. The girl would not entertain me, as in her eyes I favoured the “wrong” football team, which the office found hilarious!!
Anyway, at a works night out in the Admiral bar, Margaret and a few other office girls jumped on top of me when I was sitting down and gave me a wedgy and ripped my kecks clean off.

Aye……. Margaret probably still has a piece of my kecks framed above her mantlepiece!!

Phil Belcher (2002 – Present)

I still remember when I first met Mags.
It was my very first visit to the office and I was quite nervous about meeting everyone.
Walking in I was met by this lovely lady with a big smile introducing herself as Margaret and showing me up to the boardroom introducing me to people as we walked bye. Thanks for the welcome Mags.

Some fond memories over the years, mainly being chased to sort out outstanding invoices. Wow 40 years, well done.

Peter Burnett (2006 – Present)

40 Years ago, to this week – Big events from this week in that year
The 1st London marathon was run
Blondie was #1 with Rapture
Tories were in power with another Mags at the Helm.
And HF employed Margaret Cairney, which is very Apt in relation to the items above
Mags you have 40 years’ service, wow that is a Marathon and some and you are still running Blondie at no1 (I am sure that is who you model your hair styles from)
Margret Thatcher (you are HF GROUPS very own iron lady) many a customer shudders when you come a calling.

My earliest memory is the 1st day I walked into HF and as I Walked through the office, Mags looked up and said who are you!! and you and who are you looking for (with her best iron lady stare)

Well done Mags. You make me smile every time I talk with you. You are 1 in a million

Robert Campbell (1989 – Present)

Margaret Cairney AKA, Maggie, Wee Mags, an HF institution for 40 years not out. An integral part of what makes HF a special place. May she continue to terrorise our customers (and us ) for another 40 years. Have a great day Maggie x

Brendan Duffy (1998 – Present)

The universe has constants helping to keep things in the air and things on the ground. At HF, we have our own constant…..Mags!
She’s constantly:
• Keeping things….and people…..and clients in their place and on their toes.
• There when you need her
• Hounding naughty clients (when they don’t want her to)
• Organising social gatherings
• In the middle of these social gatherings
Stay constant Mags…. don’t change.

Craig Stevenson (1992 – Present)

Many congratulations Margaret on your 40-year Anniversary with HF. This is a fantastic achievement and testament to your hard work and dedication during this time.
I’ve known you since I was an eighteen-year-old spending my first few months in the stores and I have nothing but fond memories of one of the kindest people I’ve ever come across.
You have a heart of gold but at the same time can turn on the “Rottweiler” instinct when it comes to dealing with debtors. I always recall Stuart telling clients on the phone that he’d send wee Mags’s round in a black van with a baseball bat to sort them out and that was usually enough of a threat to get them to pay up .Here’s to another 40 years-service to the matriarch of HF!

Niven Baillie (1985 – Present)

My first memories of Margaret Cairney was when I was stuck in the Edinburgh Stores back in 1985, Margaret’s name was always heard around the office usually with the response tell her I am out from Phil or Harry!
Even when Margaret took a day off (not that she took many) would pop through on the train to see Ronnie in the Edinburgh office, think I met her daughters when they were still in the buggy.
Margaret always thinks about others first and I feel she has a heart of gold; she always asks about my family and likewise we have spoken about hers.
Don’t know where we would be without you. Well Done Margaret 40 years and still at it.

Eric Bowie (1987 – Present)

Margaret or “Cairney” as she is referred to in my household, is someone with whom I have butted heads with on more than one occasion but on many more occasions shared a laugh with.
I will be forever haunted by her maternity outfit when she was carrying the twins, baggy trousers held up with a piece of string.

Stuart Dron (1990 – Present)

Mags, 40 years is an incredible achievement! Huge congratulations and a big big hug.
31 years you have been in my life and so many memories, a true constant for me over the years as the company grew, changed and developed but you were always there, always a friend, always supportive and never shy of offering an opinion or advice.
Always the one approaching with an envelope collecting cash, always the one racing in for the birthday kiss (even although I’d kept it a secret).
Always the one keeping us in check in the back office for too much cheek and hilarity. Always the one trying to lure the apprentice into the basement…only kidding. And back in the day, always the one rounding us up and making sure we all went across to the Lord Darnley on a Friday after work.
We are all so proud of your achievement and all so much the better for having you in our lives. Many more years to go Margaret.

Why PPM Contracts are so important

Planned and Preventative Maintenance Contracts (PPM) cover all aspects of routine, reactive and emergency call out work.

They are designed to make sure that your businesses vital assets, machinery and other necessary equipment are all working efficiently without any underlying issues. This is done through what is called ‘planned routine maintenance’ or PPM for short.

Why is a PPM is so important?

Instead of waiting for equipment to breakdown or electrical faults to cause your business to literally stop, you can take the initiative and sign up for a PPM contract with HF. Maintenance contracts have always been an advisable service for businesses to take advantage of because, just like your homes boiler servicing, PPM is designed to prevent breakdowns and failures of vital business assets while minimising any operational downtime should there be an unexpected issue.

And for any businesses that depend on these vital assets to operate, the importance of PPM can never be stressed highly enough.

What does a PPM cover?

For total peace of mind, a PPM contract gives you a Manned 24 Hour Call-out Service for all Mechanical, Electrical and Fire & Security Services as well as periodic maintenance work. This gives your business peace of mind that your commercial buildings assets are well maintained, safe and compliant for all insurance, health & safety and building regulation requirements.

Over the lifespan of your business and the mechanical and electrical fittings within your commercial properties, a PPM Contract will result in your business saving considerably in call out charges, emergency repairs and unplanned maintenance work. By taking a proactive approach to your business maintenance requirements, you will be able to identify and address issues early and have them fixed quickly with minimal downtime for your business.  As ‘A Company Well Connected’, we are able to offer our clients a vast range of services – all under the one roof. This includes everything from fire and security systems to HVAC, plumbing, gas installations, air conditioning, electrical work and so much more.

PPM contracts with HF Group will ensure your business assets and equipment is kept in the best possible condition while reducing the chances of expensive breakdowns and reactive repair call outs.

What is an MCB?

An MCB is a Miniature Circuit Breaker designed to protect an electric circuit from overload or short circuit.

MCBs have all but replaced fuse wires as a safety measure to protect an electric circuit from over-current because they are safer and come with the advantage that they are reusable.  Older Fuse wires were designed to melt and break the electrical circuit in order to protect the electrical equipment. But in doing so, these fuse wires had to be completely replaced.  MCBs are reusable (unless they suffer from a serious overload) and are much easier to use, replace and isolate circuits with as they come with the convenience of an ‘on/off’ switch to isolate circuits.  Housed in protective plastic casings, they are far safer to use and to operate by electricians during electrical installations (for example).

How does an MCB work?

MCBs protect against overloads and short circuits. But these are two different types of over-current and as such, have to be dealt with in different ways by an MCB.

To protect an electrical circuit from overload, the MCB is fitted with a bi-metallic strip. When an overload occurs, the bi-metallic strip rapidly heats and bends. This releases a mechanical latch which opens and breaks the circuit.

A short circuit on the other hand causes a sudden rise in electric current.  This causes a plunger within the MCB to strike the trip lever which creates an immediate release of the latch mechanism and in turn breaks the circuit.

Where are MCBs used?

MCBs come in a variety of Amp ratings that can be use in most domestic wiring installations for example:

6 Amp – Used for standard lighting systems (ask us about our LED Lighting Upgrades)

10 Amp – Used for larger standard circuits though as more homes move to energy saving solutions, they are becoming less common.

16 Amp – Commonly used for boilers and other high energy heating systems.

20 Amp – See above.

32 Amp – Used to separate sections or floors of a domestic property.

40 Amp – Used for high energy requiring electric ovens, electric hobs, electric showers etc.

50 Amp – Used for high powered electric showers.

Over three centuries in business

A look into the origins of HF and our company philosophy.

You may have heard us, from time to time, mention that HF’s family culture stretches back over three centuries in business. But what exactly do we mean by that and why is it relevant to our business today?

When we talk about our history and the family culture behind HF, we are often referring to where it all began and the companies original founder, Hugh M Fulton.

Hugh M Fulton began his career, like so many of our modern day electricians, as an electrical apprentice in the late 1800s working for a company called Claude Hamilton.  Now known as CHES, a part of FES.

Over the following decades, Hugh Fulton graduated from apprentice to electrician and eventually became one of the most highly regarded electricians in the country. Something which was recognised when he became President of the Electrical Contractors Association of Scotland in 1937.

over three centuries

The original Hugh Fulton Electrical Ltd company was founded in Glasgow just 15 years later in 1952 and then in 1981, HF Electrical Ltd was established and became the first of what we now know as HF branded companies.

Over the following four decades, we have diversified and developed abreast of industry advancements and have grown into a group of world-class companies leading the way in next-generation technologies; and all with a family continuity at management level which is rarely seen.

HF Group (itself formed in 2007) is what can be seen as the umbrella company for the other brands within HF. This allows these individual companies to continue to trade under their own name whilst being part of the HF Group and allow for their own future growth.

Our HF Timeline of new divisions

Why does this matter?

HF’s family culture means much more than dates and numbers. It’s quite literally, the core of the business. We consider all of our employees as part of the family and invaluable assets to our ongoing success. So we continually invest in training and development, allowing the entire team to share in a thriving and mutually supportive working environment. This philosophy and the way that we operate as a business can trace its roots back over three centuries ago when Hugh M Fulton first began as an electrical apprentice.  That philosophy and his recognition of the vital benefits that apprentices can bring to a business like ours has continued into the 21st century as we continue to grow into a group of world-class companies leading the way in next-generation technologies. Faced with today’s business challenges – recessions, pandemics, takeovers and mergers, this is testament to HF’s truly outstanding approach.

A career with HF as an apprentice

Are you looking for more than just a job? Are you looking for a career?
At HF you can do just that. One that promises unique challenges, a varied workload and great career progression opportunities within the company.

We are always looking for enthusiastic and motivated individuals to join us as apprentices and continue the legacy that Hugh M Fulton first founded over three centuries ago.

We have so many success stories within HF; from the almost endless number of
electrical apprentices who have forged successful, long spanning careers with us, to those who have moved from one division of HF to another as they grow and seek new challenges.

“ An apprenticeship with us opens the door to a rewarding lifelong career.
The majority of our apprentices have stayed with the company and forged real careers with us. And all without the financial pressures of student debt. ”

Hugh R Fulton Managing Director

What we are looking for…

Whether it be plumbers, electricians, gas engineers or intruder alarm installers, we are looking for enthusiastic and motivated individuals who want to develop their career and make HF their home.

The benefits of being an apprentice…

If that sounds like you then we want to hear more about you.

West of Scotland Apprentice of the Year

HF Electrical 1st Year apprentice Craig Rowe has won the West of Scotland 1st stage Apprentice of the year.

The competition in Dumfries this year involved elements of practical and theory work and though the standard was very high, Craig was able to come out on top.

In little over a year since beginning his apprenticeship, Craig has managed to demonstrate an exceptional skill level that belies his experience, receiving excellent feedback from his tradesmen and college. He has also shown a strong work ethic and willingness to learn that is so valued at HF. The challenge for Craig is to continue this progress to ensure he is ready to take on the best of the rest of Scotland in the National competition later this year

Everyone at HF is very proud of Craig’s achievement and delighted that his hard work and effort has been recognised in this manner. We are equally proud of all 60 + apprentices that we have across our 5 regional offices – Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen, Manchester and Belfast –  and our 8 core disciplines – Electrical, Plumbing, Heating, Air-conditioning, Fire, Security, Comms and Controls. At HF we have identified the importance of modern apprenticeships, “They are the life-blood of our industry” says Hugh R Fulton, HF Group Operations Director.

If you are interested in becoming an HF apprentice, please contact personnel@hf-group.co.uk and we will do everything we can to guide you towards the right colleges and courses to ensure your dream can become a reality.

The Importance of Heavy-Duty Transformers in Control Panels and Automated Systems

At HF, our Automated Controls division specialise in designing and implementing advanced control panels and automated systems for a wide range of industries around the globe.

A key component that often plays a critical role in the functionality and reliability of these systems is the heavy-duty transformer. Understanding the importance of these transformers is crucial to appreciating how they contribute to the success of our projects and the satisfaction of our clients.

What Are Heavy-Duty Transformers?

Heavy-duty transformers are specialised electrical devices designed to transfer electrical energy between two or more circuits through electromagnetic induction. Unlike standard transformers, heavy-duty transformers are built to handle higher loads, offering superior durability and efficiency in demanding environments. These transformers can manage substantial power levels, making them ideal for industrial applications where reliability and performance are non-negotiable.

Why Heavy-Duty Transformers Are Crucial in Our Work

In many industrial applications, the power demands are substantial, and the equipment must operate continuously under high loads. Heavy-duty transformers are engineered to manage these high power requirements without compromising performance. This capability is essential in ensuring that the control panels and automated systems we design can operate reliably under the most challenging conditions.

The environments in which our control systems operate can be harsh, with exposure to extreme temperatures, humidity, and vibration. Heavy-duty transformers are constructed using robust materials and advanced manufacturing techniques providing exceptional durability and a longer operational life. This resilience reduces the risk of system failures and minimises maintenance costs, ensuring that our clients’ operations run smoothly with minimal downtime.

A stable power supply is critical for the accurate and safe operation of control systems and automated processes. Heavy-duty transformers provide consistent voltage regulation, even when the input power fluctuates. This stability is vital in protecting sensitive components within our control panels from damage due to power surges thereby enhancing the overall reliability of the system.

At HF Controls, we know that each client’s needs are unique. It is one of the reasons we are a specialist bespoke control panel design and manufacturer.  Heavy-duty transformers offer the flexibility to be customised to specific voltage and current requirements, allowing us to tailor our control panels and systems to meet the exact specifications of any project. As our clients’ operations grow, these transformers can even be scaled to handle increased power demands, ensuring that the systems we design remain future-proof and adaptable. Ideal for Plant Life Extension (PLEX) work.

Safety is a paramount concern for us at HF and is one of our four core company values.  Safety is therefore integral in the design and implementation of any control system we design and build. Heavy-duty transformers are designed to meet stringent safety standards and regulatory requirements, ensuring that our systems not only perform optimally but also adhere to all necessary safety protocols. This compliance is crucial in industries where the consequences of electrical failures can be severe, such as in power generation, oil and gas, and manufacturing sectors.  All of which we work in regularly.

The Role of Heavy-Duty Transformers in Automated Controls’ Projects

In our work at HF Controls, heavy-duty transformers are more than just components; they are integral to the success of our solutions. Whether we are designing a control panel for a power plant or developing an automated system for a manufacturing facility, the reliability, efficiency, and safety of these transformers enable us to deliver high-quality systems that meet and exceed our clients’ expectations.

By embracing the capabilities of heavy-duty transformers, we ensure that the control systems we design are not only robust and reliable but also capable of withstanding the rigors of demanding industrial environments. Their ability to handle high power loads, provide stability, and ensure safety makes them indispensable in the design and implementation of our control panels and automated systems. Through their use, we can continue to deliver innovative, reliable, and scalable solutions that empower our clients to achieve their operational goals on a global scale. This commitment to quality and performance is what sets HF apart as a leader in the field of control panels and automated systems.
