Brief Project Description: Electrical Diagnostics, Power Monitoring, & System Upgrades
Following a major renovation and high-spec kitchen fit-out in 2025, a well-known UK hotel operator began experiencing significant operational disruptions. Despite the modern upgrades, the building’s electrical infrastructure was failing. The existing 160-amp supply was frequently tripping under load, causing power outages that threatened both guest experience and kitchen operations.
The original fit-out contractor had failed to calculate the cumulative power demands of the new industrial kitchen equipment alongside the hotel’s baseline requirements. HF Mechanical & Electrical was brought in as a specialist electrical contractor to diagnose the root cause and implement a permanent solution.
To move beyond guesswork, we utilised a Power Analyser. We installed the device for a full week to capture real-time data on power spikes, fluctuations, and consumption patterns.
Our analysis revealed that the hotel was pulling an average of 230–240 amps—drastically exceeding the 160-amp threshold.
The data specifically highlighted:
• Seasonal Surges: Increased use of electrical heating during the winter cold was pushing the already strained system over the edge.
• Peak Demand: The synergy of breakfast/dinner service in the new kitchen combined with guest room climate control created unsustainable load peaks.
The Solution
Our electricians proposed a comprehensive upgrade to a 250-amp supply to provide the necessary “headroom” for current and future operations.
Our team installed a new, high-capacity isolator and upgraded the internal cabling and distribution boards and managed the logistics with the local Distribution Network Operator (DNO) to ensure the final transition and supply isolation were handled safely and with minimal downtime for the hotel.
The installation was completed seamlessly, restoring full operational reliability to the site.
Proactive vs. Reactive
This case study highlights the importance of expert consultation during the planning stages of a renovation. While HF successfully resolved the crisis, our experience in the hospitality sector allows us to see the “big picture” early on.
Had HF been involved during the initial summer fit-out, we would have identified the power deficit immediately. By factoring in “worst-case” winter heating demands while the kitchen was being gutted, the upgrade could have been completed during the low-demand summer months, avoiding the stress and cost of emergency winter repairs.
The hotel now operates with a robust, future-proof electrical system. Guest comfort is maintained regardless of the weather, and the kitchen staff can utilise their high-spec equipment at full capacity without the fear of a blackout.
