At HF, we regularly say that our greatest assets aren’t the tools in our vans or the tech in our offices, but the people who carry our values and wear the HF brand with pride. Today, we have the distinct honour of celebrating a milestone that defines that sentiment as Martin Fairweather celebrates his 40th Anniversary with the company.
In 1986, Martin joined HF as an electrician. Since then, he hasn’t just witnessed the evolution of the industry or the company; he has helped shape the very standard of excellence that we are known for today.
Over the last four decades, Martin has become one of the most capable engineers to ever pull on an HF uniform. While his technical range is vast, it is his work on large-scale industrial cabling that has earned him a reputation bordering on legendary.
He is a man who truly loves what he does, and that passion is reflected in the precision of his installs. To see Martin on a site is to see a master at work. From massive commercial hubs to complex industrial plants, Martin’s handywork is woven into the infrastructure of countless premises across the country.
We pride ourselves on being a company where people don’t just find a job, they build a career. Martin is a shining example of that culture, but his value goes far beyond his own technical output; it lies in the knowledge he shares.
One of the many apprentices who learned the ropes under Martin is one of our current Contract Managers, Frank Rafferty. Frank, who has himself surpassed the 20-year milestone at HF, remembers his time under Martin’s wing as the foundation of his career. When Frank hit his own 20-year anniversary, he shared advice that perfectly encapsulates what Martin has been able to pass on to the next generation.
“Listen to your tradesman and have a good work ethic. When I was an apprentice, I turned up on time, I paid attention to what I was being told, and I put in the hours. The early days can be tough and there is a lot to learn, but Martin set the bar high, not just in terms of the work, but in how you conduct yourself on a job.
Not every day is a good day, but with the variation in what I get to do and the scale of jobs I get to work on, it has all been worth it.”
As we look toward the next 40 years, our priority is ensuring that Martin’s depth of skill and “old-school” work ethic are passed down to our current crop of engineers and apprentices.
Martin joins a growing and impressive list of long-serving team members at HF. His journey from a starting electrician in the mid-80s to a cornerstone of our engineering team proves that with the right environment, a job can turn into a lifelong calling.
To Martin: Thank you for your dedication, your brilliance under a floorboard (or atop a scaffold), and for being a familiar, trusted face to our clients for forty years.
