Prioritising Safety on the Roads This Winter

Health & Safety

As winter approaches, we are taking the opportunity to remind our team of the importance of safe driving, particularly in the challenging weather conditions that come with the colder months.

Safety has always been at the heart of our core values, and we’re dedicated to ensuring the wellbeing of each member of our team. In line with these values, we urge everyone to take the extra steps needed to keep themselves and others safe on the roads.

Winter conditions—whether it’s ice, snow, fog, or rain—can make even familiar routes treacherous. This is a timely reminder to all HF employees to stay cautious and prepared, as we know that road safety requires not only experience but also vigilance.

HF Company Values

Here are some essential tips for safe winter driving:

  1. Plan Ahead
Check weather forecasts before heading out and be prepared for potential delays. If conditions look severe, consider rescheduling your journey if possible.
  2. Vehicle Checks
Make sure your vehicle is winter-ready. This includes checking tire pressure and tread depth, ensuring windshield wipers are functional, and that the windshield washer fluid is topped up with an anti-freeze mix.
  3. Adjust Your Speed
Icy and wet roads require slower speeds and greater stopping distances. Allow extra time to brake, accelerate gradually, and avoid sharp turns.
  4. Pack Emergency Essentials
Keep items such as a blanket, extra warm clothing, a torch, a shovel, and some non-perishable snacks in your vehicle. These can make a big difference if you encounter unexpected delays or need to wait for assistance.
  5. Stay Alert and Focused
Avoid distractions, especially in low-visibility conditions. Remain vigilant for other drivers who may also be struggling with the winter road conditions.

HF’s Driver Awareness Training

We also want to remind all employees about HF’s driver training and awareness e-learning courses. These courses provide valuable insights into safe driving practices, especially under difficult conditions, and cover everything from defensive driving to effective vehicle checks. We encourage all team members to take advantage of these resources to refresh their skills and stay prepared for winter’s unique challenges on the road.

We are committed to doing everything we can to support our team’s safety throughout the year, and particularly in the face of winter’s added challenges. Please remember that no destination is worth compromising your safety. Take the extra time and the extra care required to navigate winter’s unique hazards, and let’s make this season a safe one for everyone in the HF family.
