Electrical

Brief Project Description: Shakespeare’s Pub, a historic Belhaven/Greene King establishment in Edinburgh, wanted to switch from gas-powered kitchen appliances in favour of sustainable electric alternatives. This significant shift from gas to electrical required a comprehensive upgrade to the pub’s electrical infrastructure. HF was engaged to deliver a solution that not only met the technical demands of the new appliances but also ensured compliance with the latest safety standards and regulations.

The project involved modernising outdated electrical systems, combining two distribution boards to optimise space and introduce advanced safety measures to protect kitchen staff. Our Edinburgh Electricians were tasked with completing these upgrades while ensuring no down time for the pub and ensuring minimal disruption.

We identified the need for new electrical supplies to power the updated appliances. This included installing a three-phase supply for a new fryer and creating additional circuits for a new oven and hob. The project required careful planning to ensure that the work could be executed efficiently without compromising the kitchen’s functionality during peak hours.

Beyond the installation of new supplies, our electricians fitted IP-rated sockets along the cook line to enhance durability and safety in the demanding kitchen environment. Existing sockets were modified to accommodate the new appliances, ensuring seamless integration. All circuits were equipped with RCBOs, providing the highest level of protection against electrical faults and safeguarding the kitchen staff who rely on these systems daily.

Project Challenges: The primary challenge was addressing the limitations of the pub’s existing electrical infrastructure. The kitchen had two distribution boards (DBs), one of which was outdated and lacked sufficient capacity to support the new high-power appliances. To resolve this, our electricians proposed consolidating the DBs into a single, modern unit that could handle the increased load and comply with the 18th edition regulations.

Our electricians meticulous approach resulted in a modernised electrical system that met the client’s goals of sustainability, efficiency and safety. The consolidation of the two DBs into one not only created additional capacity but also simplified the system for future maintenance and upgrades. By bringing all electrical components in line with the latest regulations, our electricians ensured the infrastructure was both future-proof and compliant.

The project was completed to the highest standards, and Shakespeare’s Pub is now fully equipped to operate with a new system that not only supports the current appliances but is also adaptable for any future enhancements, providing long-term value for the client.
