Tullibardine Distillery

Client: Tullibardine Distillery
Completion date: July 25
HF divisions involved:

Mechanical

Brief Project Description: Tullibardine Distillery is a renowned name in the whisky industry and with increasing visitors to their distillery, they had been facing increased challenges with their existing air conditioning system. At over 20 years old, the system had become increasingly “not fit for purpose.” Its frequent breakdowns were not only disruptive to operations but also incurred substantial maintenance costs, impacting the distillery’s efficiency and budget. Due to the age of the system and current F-Gas legislations it had become imperative that the system was replaced.

With visitor experience being paramount, the old system’s visual components were also outdated and did not align with the distillery’s refined aesthetic, particularly in public-facing areas.

Our Air Conditioning Installers were commissioned to provide a complete overhaul of Tullibardine’s air conditioning infrastructure. Our solution focused on addressing both the immediate operational issues and long-term sustainability and aesthetic goals.

We replaced the entire air conditioning system with a state-of-the-art Mitsubishi solution. As an accredited installer for Mitsubishi systems, we ensured that the new installation leveraged the latest technology for optimal performance and reliability. Understanding the importance of the visitor experience, our team paid close attention to the visual details of the new system. We ensured that all visible components were seamlessly integrated and aesthetically pleasing, better fitting the elegant visitor areas of the distillery. The new system not only performs better but also now looks the part.

The new Mitsubishi system offers significantly improved capacity for both cooling and heating. This ensures that the venue remains comfortably cool during the hot summer months and provides efficient, consistent warmth throughout the colder winter periods, creating an ideal environment for both staff and visitors year-round.

A key benefit of the new system is its superior energy efficiency. The new air conditioning system drastically reduces energy consumption, leading to substantial reductions in the distillery’s energy bills going forward. This aligns with modern sustainability goals and provides a tangible return on investment.

Project Challenges: The main challenge in this project was ensuring that the entire air conditioning system would operate efficiently and reliably. During the initial assessment, our AC engineers identified a critical underlying issue: the prolonged vibrations and poor condition of the old system had caused multiple cracks in the existing pipework. These vibrations, transmitted down the pipes on the cable trays, had led to leaks, further compromising the system’s performance and posing a potential risk to the distillery’s infrastructure. Addressing the critical issue of the damaged pipework, our engineers undertook a complete replacement of all associated piping. This proactive measure ensures that the entire air conditioning system operates to the highest standards, free from leaks and the risks associated with compromised infrastructure, guaranteeing long-term reliability.

The successful implementation of the new air conditioning system by our air conditioning engineers has brought numerous benefits to Tullibardine Distillery. They now boast a robust and dependable climate control system, eliminating frequent breakdowns and ensuring consistent comfort.

With significant savings being realised through decreased energy consumption and the elimination of costly emergency repairs, the state-of-the-art Mitsubishi system and new pipework provide a long-term, high-performing solution built to last.

This project at Tullibardine Distillery shows our commitment to delivering high-quality, tailored air conditioning solutions nationwide. Our ability to diagnose complex issues, implement advanced technology and pay attention to both functional and aesthetic details ensures that our clients receive systems that are not only efficient and reliable but also perfectly suited to their unique needs.

Client: Bellrock / Marston’s
Completion date: June 25
HF divisions involved:

Mechanical

Brief Project Description: HF Mechanical recently completed the installation of two new water heaters at the Highland Gate Pub & Restaurant in Stirling, working for Bellrock on behalf of Marston’s. This upgrade was essential to maintaining the high standards of comfort and service expected in a busy hospitality environment.

In the hospitality sector, hot water is non-negotiable. From kitchen operations and dishwashing to handwashing and guest facilities, the reliability of hot water supply directly impacts hygiene, customer satisfaction and regulatory compliance. An interruption in hot water service can lead to downtime, loss of revenue and potential breaches of health and safety standards, so it was vital that our engineers completed the job with no interruption to business operations.

For a busy site like Highland Gate, ensuring a consistent and efficient hot water supply is critical to smooth day-to-day operations—especially during peak service hours.

Our heating engineers carried out the full removal of the existing, aging water heating units and replaced them with two high-efficiency, modern Andrews Water Heaters (part of Baxi Heating’s Commercial Team). These new units offer improved performance and greater energy efficiency, helping the client reduce long-term operating costs.

As part of the installation, our team also fitted new pipework to support the upgraded system layout, ensuring optimal flow and system integrity. In addition, we applied pipe lagging throughout the system to enhance thermal efficiency—helping retain heat, reduce energy loss and improve the overall performance and sustainability of the heating system.

At HF, we pride ourselves on the quality of our workmanship. When installing new heating systems, we follow a meticulous process that ensures safe, long-lasting, and efficient results. Every component is installed with precision and tested thoroughly to meet both industry standards and the client’s expectations.

Project Challenges: One of the main challenges of the project was the location of the plant room, which is situated on the first floor. We worked closely with the venue operators to coordinate access and logistics, ensuring minimal disruption to guests and seamless continuation of day-to-day pub and restaurant operations.

The end result was that the hospitality venue now has two new high-performance water heaters installed that offer enhanced reliability and reduced energy consumption. The new pipework and insulation offers improved thermal efficiency and all the work was completed with no interruption to business operations during installation.

At HF, we  continue to deliver reliable, high-quality mechanical solutions for the hospitality industry, ensuring that businesses like Highland Gate can focus on serving their customers, while we take care of the infrastructure behind the scenes.

Brief Project Description: HF was called out to a local hospitality venue in Edinburgh where the carbon monoxide (CO) alarm had been triggered. CO alarms are vital for safety and a fast response time was crucial to assess and deal with the situation which is why the property manager contacted HF’s Mechanical Division to investigate and resolve the issue as soon as possible.

condemned boiler replacement in Edinburgh

At HF, we offer Manned 24 Hour Call-out Services for all of our Electrical,  Mechanical and Fire & Security Services to ensure that businesses nationwide can quickly resolve any urgent issues no matter the day or hour. Upon arrival, our experienced mechanical engineer quickly assessed the situation. The source of the carbon monoxide was traced to the venue’s boiler. The engineer discovered that the gas valve of the boiler had experienced a catastrophic failure, leading to incomplete combustion. This failure was causing the build up of carbon monoxide, setting off the CO alarm.

Given the severity of the issue, the engineer condemned the faulty boiler and recommended an immediate replacement which we quoted for. It was clear that the boiler was beyond repair and had reached the end of its service life.

Understanding the urgency of the situation, we prioritised a quick turnaround for the installation and upon acceptance of the quote, our team moved swiftly to remove the old boiler and install the new one with minimal downtime, ensuring the hospitality venue could continue operations as smoothly as possible.

The new high-efficiency boiler was chosen for its reliability, energy efficiency and long-term value. It also adhered to the latest safety and environmental standards, offering peace of mind to the property owner and tenants.

The replacement boiler not only addressed the immediate safety concern but also provided the client with a more efficient and reliable heating solution. Our ability to respond promptly, with an effective solution, reinforced our commitment to providing excellent service and maintaining client safety.

Project Challenges: The main challenge with this project was ensuring the safety of occupants of the building and working to a tight turn around time.  Safety is always our highest priority and once the catastrophic failure had been identified and the boiler had been condemned, we turned our attention to replacing the system as quickly as possible.  As we were in the depths of November in Scotland, the weather was frequently dipping down to zero degrees so we had to ensure that the new boiler was fitted quickly to ensure that the venue could continue to operate in what is the start of their busiest time of the year.  Our Mechanical team are experts in the installation of boilers and heating systems businesses of all sizes, not just in Edinburgh but nationwide. Brief Project Description: North British Distillers in Addiewell recently undertook a comprehensive Mechanical & Electrical refurbishment project to modernise their facilities. We were entrusted with the task of enhancing the ventilation, heating, cooling, and sanitary facilities to improve comfort and efficiency in the newly formed offices and canteen.

Three Heat Recovery Units were installed as part of the M&E refurbishment. These units are essential for maintaining air quality by providing a continuous supply of fresh air and extracting used air from the offices and canteen. By recovering heat from the extracted air, these units also contribute to energy efficiency, reducing heating and cooling costs.

large scale ventilation installation work

We installed state-of-the-art comfort heating and cooling systems in the office areas to ensure a pleasant working environment throughout the year. The canteen and toilet areas were also equipped with new heating systems to provide consistent warmth and comfort.

As part of the refurbishment, the toilet facilities were completely overhauled. New toilets, basins, and showers were installed, significantly improving the hygiene and usability of these essential amenities.

Project Challenges: Because of the scale of the installation project, the biggest challenge was handling deliveries of the equipment and installing it without disrupting day to day operations at the site.  Our Mechanical & Electrical team are well versed in working in these kind of environments and on these size of jobs so with proper planning and scheduling of deliveries, our work ran smoothly throughout.

The Heat Recovery Units have significantly improved the air quality in the newly formed offices and canteen. By continuously providing fresh air and efficiently removing used air, these units create a healthier and more comfortable environment for staff.

The new heating and cooling systems ensure that the offices remain comfortable in all seasons, enhancing productivity and employee satisfaction. The upgraded heating in the toilets and canteen areas also ensures that these spaces remain warm and welcoming.

The refurbishment of the toilet facilities has provided modern, clean, and efficient amenities, improving the overall experience for employees and visitors.

The heat recovery units contribute to the energy efficiency of the building by recycling heat from the extracted air, leading to lower energy consumption and reduced operational costs.

The successful completion of the M&E refurbishment project at North British Distillers, Addiewell, highlights our expertise in delivering comprehensive, high-quality solutions. By installing advanced ventilation, heating, cooling, and sanitary systems, we have ensured that the facilities are modern, efficient, and comfortable, meeting the needs of the client and their staff.

The Park Hotel, Peebles

Client: The Park Hotel, Peebles
Completion date: July 24
HF divisions involved:
Mechanical
Plumbing, Heating & AC

Brief Project Description: The Park Hotel in Peebles recently embarked on a significant upgrade to its heating and hot water systems to enhance energy efficiency and reliability. Our Mechanical Engineers were commissioned to install three new ACV Heatmaster 85 TC Evo gas-fired heaters. These state-of-the-art water heaters replaced the hotel’s aging gas boilers and hot water cylinders, promising substantial improvements in energy consumption and operational performance.

The objectives were simple. Replace the old gas boilers and hot water cylinders with modern, energy-efficient solutions and install reliable and efficient heating and hot water systems to ensure consistent service.

We were required to integrate new pumps, press unit, air dirt separator, and a mechanical control panel for optimal performance and insulate all pipework to minimise heat loss and maximise energy savings.

We installed three ACV Heatmaster 85 TC Evo gas-fired heaters, which are renowned for their high efficiency and reliability. These heaters combine the functions of a high-output boiler and a water heater in a single unit, providing an efficient solution for both heating and hot water needs.

To support the new water heaters, we installed all new pumps, a press unit, and an air dirt separator. These components are critical for maintaining the efficiency and longevity of the heating system. The air dirt separator, in particular, helps to remove air and impurities from the water, reducing the risk of corrosion and blockages.

Peebles Hotel Boiler Heating Upgrade Work

A full new Mechanical Control Panel was installed to manage and optimise the operation of the heating system. This control panel allows for precise regulation of the heaters, ensuring they operate at peak efficiency and respond accurately to the hotel’s heating and hot water demands.

Upon completion of the installation, all pipework was thoroughly insulated. This step is essential for reducing heat loss, which in turn improves the overall efficiency of the heating system and reduces energy costs.

Project Challenges: The heating and hot water system upgrade was scheduled in the summer months when demand for heating is at a yearly low.  However, because this is a hotel, our work needed to be staggered to ensure that the hospitality venue was still able to offer customers hot water through the upgrade work.  As a leading mechanical contractor, our experience of working in large scale heating systems like this is first rate and our team were able to schedule the work to minimise any disruption to the hotels guests.

The old boiler systems were taken to be recycled and the new system was properly tested to ensure that it performs reliably from day one.

The ACV Heatmaster 85 TC Evo gas-fired heaters are significantly more energy-efficient than the old gas boilers and hot water cylinders. This upgrade will lead to a reduction in energy consumption and operational costs for The Park Hotel while the high-quality components will enhance the reliability of the hotel’s heating and hot water system, ensuring a consistent supply of hot water and heating throughout the premises.

The successful upgrade of The Park Hotel’s heating and hot water systems highlights our consistent success rate in delivering energy-efficient, reliable, and high-performance solutions to customers who require substantial upgrade and installation work with minimal disruption to their day to day business activities. By installing modern water heaters, supporting components, and comprehensive insulation, we have ensured that The Park Hotel will benefit from reduced energy costs, improved system reliability, and enhanced overall performance.

Mechanical
Plumbing, Heating & AC

Abbotsinch is a popular bar, restaurant and function room in Grangemouth. As part of upgrade works at the hospitality venue, Abbotsinch sought to upgrade their gas supply infrastructure to support the installation of new catering appliances.

Brief Project Description: Abbotsinch faced a critical challenge in ensuring the adequacy and safety of its gas supply infrastructure. With the installation of new catering appliances requiring a higher gas volume, the existing 22mm gas pipe needed to be upgraded to a larger 54mm pipe. Additionally, strict gas regulations mandated adherence to rigorous testing procedures, including strength tests, tightness tests, and air-to-gas purging, as outlined in igem/up/1 guidelines.

Renowned for our expertise in mechanical services, HF was entrusted with the task of upgrading Abbotsinch’s gas supply infrastructure. Our team of highly skilled gas engineers meticulously planned and executed the project, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards while minimizing disruption to ongoing operations.

Our engineers conducted a thorough assessment of the existing gas supply infrastructure to determine the scope of work required for the upgrade. The existing 22mm gas pipe was replaced with a larger 54mm pipe to accommodate the increased gas volume demanded by the new catering appliances. In accordance with igem/up/1 guidelines, our engineers rigorously followed prescribed methods to conduct strength tests, tightness tests, and air-to-gas purging, ensuring compliance with safety standards.

Gas line upgrade work for bar and restaurant.

Project Challenges: Recognising the challenges posed by the bustling nature of the building site, our engineers commenced work at 5 am to safely purge the gas pipe without any personnel on-site, thereby minimising risks and ensuring a smooth execution of the task.

Addressing the challenge of the purge stack being 5m from the building and potential ignition sources, stringent safety measures were implemented to mitigate risks and ensure the safety of personnel and property.

Through meticulous planning and execution, we successfully upgraded the gas supply infrastructure, providing the necessary volume to support the installation of new catering appliances. By adhering to regulatory standards and implementing stringent safety measures, potential risks were mitigated, and the safety of the premises was ensured. The seamless execution of the project underscored our commitment to delivering excellence in mechanical services while prioritising safety and compliance.

Project Challenges: The Eurocentral head office presented challenges due to its age and numerous alterations to its footprint over the years. This resulted in a certain amount of unknowns within each system, requiring careful assessment and planning.

The existing ventilation system was substantially outdated and redundant, posing a challenge in restoring it to operational status to meet modern office environment standards.

Morgan Sindall required both mechanical and electrical systems to be upgraded and compatible with a modern office environment, necessitating efficient and economically viable solutions.

We collaborated closely with the design team from Morgan Sindall to devise efficient and economically viable solutions and this partnership ensured that the proposed upgrades aligned with the companies objectives and regulatory standards. We undertook the refurbishment and upgrade of both mechanical and electrical systems, ensuring compatibility with modern office standards which included upgrading the office buildings ventilation system and installing new LED lighting, feature lighting, and lighting controls.

The project was executed in phases to minimise disruptions to the ongoing day to day business of the companies employees and this strategic approach enabled the office to maintain operational capabilities while the refurbishment work progressed seamlessly.

The final result was the successful modernisation of the head office’s mechanical and electrical systems, aligning them with modern standards. The successful completion of the Eurocentral head office refurbishment project by our team underscores our expertise in navigating complex challenges and delivering innovative solutions in office refurbishments. Slater Steps

Project length: 3 weeks
Completion date: December 23
HF divisions involved:
Electrical

Plumbing, Heating & AC

Brief project description: 21-23 Slater’s Steps is a fully refurbished, open plan office space in Edinburgh, boasting double height ceilings that provide excellent natural light.  As part of the sites refurbishment, HF were called in to compete the electrical work including the install of a new power supply, containment and LED lighting.

As a leading electrical contractor, our experience of working in office refurbishments meant that the installation of new electrical wiring and power supply went without a hitch.

air to air heat pump as part of office refurbishment

As part of the initial project requirements, we were asked to upgrade the offices existing electric panel heaters. However, after our team had completed a site survey, we advised the client that they would be better off taking advantage of a new air to air heat pump system.  This would provide a far more comfortable office environment all year round and benefit the office space greatly over the heating system that they had originally wanted to refurbish. Air to air heat pumps are advanced, efficient heating and cooling systems that provide effortless temperature control for maximum comfort.  They are also very energy efficient which will help the office to reduce their energy consumption whilst also helping to improve the air quality within the open plan office.

The new containment was utilised to install 4 x new Daikin ceiling mounted AC indoor units that our Mechanical team fitted to provide the site with energy efficient heating and cooling all year round.

Further green energy solutions were implemented including LED lighting upgrade work. The new LED lighting means that the refurbished office now benefits from superior lighting that is also more energy efficient, helping to further cut down on the sites yearly energy consumption.

Project Challenges: As with any project of this scope, the biggest challenge was working around other contractors.

Scotwood Interiors were responsible for the fit-out fabric works and our electricians and mechanical engineers successfully worked alongside them to ensure that all the electrical and mechanical work was completed to set schedules that would allow the office decorating to proceed without any delays.

Our clients satisfaction is always a sign that we have done a good job and with this project, the client was so pleased with the quality of our work that our fire & security engineers have already been contracted to replace the offices existing alarm system with a new and improved one.

Royal Edinburgh Hospital

Client: Royal Edinburgh Hospital
Project length: 6 days
Completion date: October 23
HF divisions involved:
Mechanical
Plumbing, Heating & AC

Brief project description: With winter fast approaching, our Mechanical engineers were called into specify a new hot water system to suit the needs of this specific ward within Royal Edinburgh Hospital.

Their existing system had developed a fault and it had become apparent that the system was in need of an upgrade and no longer economically viable to run.  A lack of parts, worsening reliability and high repair costs meant that it no longer made financial sense to maintain the system. The Hospital had been operating on one unit for the majority of the summer and the client needed to ensure that demand would be met throughout the approaching winter.  The decision was made to replace the old system with a brand new hot water system.

After consultation and listening to what our client needed, we turned to well known brand ACV who assisted us with selecting the right option for the hospital which was for two water Master Evo 45 water boilers. These units were specified because they offered the following features which helped meet the clients specific specifications.

The old hot water system was safely removed and recycled and the new system was installed with all related piping, lagging and control system also fitted. The new hot water system will not only be more reliable but also run more efficiently.  This will help to reduce the hospitals energy costs for many years to come.

hot water system replacement for hospital

Project Challenges: One of the challenges that our engineers had to overcome during the installation process was ensuring that the downtime associated with the project was kept to a minimum. Our experience of working in ‘live’ working environments such as this proved invaluable to the successful installation and with careful planning and the fantastic efforts of our attending engineers this was achieved with ease . The client now has a fully functioning and reliable hot water system that has full ACV product support and an extended 5 years warranty. They can look forward to a functional and economical hot water system for years to come.

Brief project description: In July, a popular local Glasgow bar closed for refurbishment and a rebrand. Once the doors had closed on what was known as Finlay’s Bar our electricians, plumbers and gas engineers could get to work on the fit out work.

With a tight deadline to complete the work before the renamed bar opened again in August, our team had to complete all required mechanical and electrical work to a strict schedule. All while working around other contractors so that painters and decorators could complete the refit in time for the scheduled reopening date.

Our electricians were responsible for the complete electrical wiring of the venue. This involved both the fitting of completely new electrical wiring as well as the replacement of old electrical fittings in the venue.

A big part of the new bar redesign is the entertainment systems which required a complete rewiring; while behind the bar, we also fitted new electrical supply points and rewired older electrical fittings to meet the clients requirements.

On the Mechanical side, we removed the old, inefficient water meter and replaced it with a new one and fitted a new Worcester Bosch boiler that was linked to a Google Nest thermostat system. The new heating system was made complete with the installation of new radiators throughout the venue.

The ladies bathroom was completely refurbished by our team with new fittings and plumbing work and we also installed a new fan convector above the main entrance door.  An ideal feature to welcome guests into the new pub when the Scottish Winter rolls in.

Project Challenges: Time was the biggest challenge on this project.  The pub had announced on social media both their closure and opening days and this had been picked up by numerous news outlets. This meant that deadlines had to be met and there was no room for error.

At HF, we have become one of the leading electrical and mechanical installers for the hospitality industry and have proven time and time again that we can deliver when it comes to tight deadlines.  So while the project timeline was tight, it posed no serious concerns for our engineers who, as always, delivered quality work for the client.

All the work was completed on time and the venue, known rebranded as ‘The Millwood’ was able to successfully open as intended in August.

At HF Group, we operate a complete Bar and Restaurant fitting service across the UK.

We supply pubs, clubs, restaurants and hotels across the country with a complete range of ElectricalMechanicalPlumbing, Heating and Fire & Security Services.

Brief project description: Our Mechanical & Electrical team completed the complete rip out and refit of the University Hospital Hairmyres in East Kilbride.  As ‘A Company Well Connected’ and with our range of in-house capabilities and service as a Mechanical & Electrical Contractor, we successfully completed the wide range of required strip out and re-fit works required.

We removed the existing (domestic) Girpi Pipe Water System and replaced it with new stainless steel piping throughout the ward while all existing sanitary ware in the ward was also stripped out so that they could be properly cleaned before being re-installed on completion of the works.

We fitted new shower valves and taps which had ‘end of line’ sensors fitted to them so that the hospital staff can monitor the DHWR temperatures. This is to ensure that the water temperature remains above 55 degrees Celsius in order to combat the threat of legionella.  The sites water services were also sterilised on completion of the work; and to ensure that this was done thoroughly, samples of the water supply were tested to ensure that no bacteria was present in the system prior to us handing over the site upon completion.

For the hospital wards heating system, we installed new heating controls throughout the facility while the existing supply and extract ventilation was inspected and cleaned with new grilles installed.  Once this work had been completed, the ventilation system was balanced.

Across the ward, we installed new medical gas points to every bed location while also fitting new alarm panels and the existing lighting system was upgraded to energy efficient LED lighting. We also fitted a new nurse call system throughout the bedrooms and bathrooms of the ward.

This new Nurse call system was designed especially for the ward by Wandsworth Healthcare. The new call system also now allows individual overbed lights to operate from a hand-held device.

Our electricians also changed over the main distribution board serving the ward (with a Type II surge protection device installed) and also installed RCBO’s to all outgoing circuits.

Project Challenges: The main challenge with this project was working around the schedules of all other contractors on site and ensuring that we met the completion date deadline given to us by the client.  As with so much of what we do, being able to provide such a wide range of services all under the one roof allows us to work efficiently around these timescales and as such, meet the demands placed on us by the client.

Star Pubs & Bars

Client: Star Pubs & Bars
Project length: 1 Week
Completion date: May 2023
HF divisions involved: ElectricalMechanical

Brief project description: Our Electrical and Mechanical team were refurbishing the kitchen for one of Star Pubs & Bars locations in Scotland.  The actual work involved the fitting of a new canopy, gas interlocking system and the usual plumbing, gas and electrical work that is required for a commercial kitchen to operate.  However when we turned up to complete the work, we noted that the Pubs LPG Tank was located in the middle of a car park and did not have adequate protection around it.  After consulting the client on the health & safety risks, we fitted a new Arco Barrier system to protect the LPG tank and make the area safer for customers and employees at the venue.

lpg tank protection barrier

Project Challenges: The actual commercial kitchen fitting proceeded smoothly and we were able to complete the work within the quoted timeline to ensure minimal disruption to the venues day to day business operations.

For the car park barrier system, the main challenge was the location itself and safety.  We were having to complete the work in an active car park location.  At HF, Safety is one of our core values.  Individually and collectively, we are all responsible. We ensured that correct safety precautions were followed throughout and we have left the site safer that it was when we first arrived.

Project Challenges: The radiators that were to be fitted in the new bathroom were bespoke and manufactured to the clients specification.  To ensure a precise fit, our engineers had to be spot on (as they always are) with the measurements for the radiator installation which required the installation of all the pipe work prior to the radiators arriving on site.

The project was completed to an extremely tight window to ensure that all the work was completed on schedule for the bespoke parts to be fitted when delivered.

From industrial heating to plumbing systems, air conditioning installation and servicing to domestic plumbing/heating issues, we specialise in all commercial, retail and domestic plumbing, heating and air conditioning services. So while this project presented challenges, it was all just business as usual for our experienced mechanical team who can work on plumbing and heating projects of all shapes, sizes and client requirements.

At the end of the project, the client was very happy with our work but the highest praise came from the clients architect who commented how pleased they were with hour our mechanical engineers went about their work and how neat and tidy the installation work was.

Scottish Building Society

Client: IZON Projects
Project length: 6 weeks
Completion date: May 2023
HF divisions involved: ElectricalMechanical

Brief project description: Our Mechanical & Electrical team were delighted to work alongside IZON Projects to carryout the electrical installation for the new Scottish Building Society branch that is now open on Frederick Street in Edinburgh.

The electrical works included the installation of new small power throughout the premises, green energy efficient LED Lighting as well as mandatory emergency lighting for the new branch.

We also completed the data installation, supplied and installed a new electric heating system for the entire branch. The final electrical work included the wiring for new intruder alarms and CCTV system that was due to be fitted.

On the Mechanical side, we fitted a new intake and extract ventilation system for the two newly formed offices.

Project Challenges: The electrical wiring had to be handled with care as we were installing the new cabling into existing walls and ceilings of the buildings ground and basement levels. Working alongside the IZON Projects team of joiners and decorators, the project ran smoothly throughout and we were able to complete the commercial electrical installation work and ventilation work without any problems.

Mitie Dungavel

Client:Dungavel House Removal Centre
Project length: 4 Days
Completion date: January 2023
HF divisions involved: Mechanical

Brief project description: Our Mechanical Division received an emergency call out to attend the Dungavel House Removal Centre because of a burst pipe. The four inch iron pipe had corroded because supporting brickwork underground had itself collapsed, leading to this issue.

Below a concrete walkway, the water pipe had burst causing flooding so our engineers upon arrival onsite isolated the plantroom to stop the leak.  The repair job itself began with the excavation of the area in order to reach the section of burst water pipe & expose it in preparation for repair work to commence.

Once we had exposed the burst water pipe, our mechanical engineers cut and removed the section of damaged pipework and replaced it with a new section of pipe and lay additional steel road plates in order to give the pipe added protection from weight above.  We returned the following day to build brickwork & concrete lintel over the open duct.  This also included cast & lay of two new duct covers as well as the supply & fit of two manhole inspection covers & frame that will allow for better access to pipework if required in the future.

When this was all completed, we filled the system and tested it to ensure it was in full working order.

Once our Mechanical team had completed the pipe repair work and it had been successfully tested, we returned one more time to lay hot tar and seal the joints, clear all debris & plant to complete.

Project Challenges: The main challenge with this repair job was the location of the burst pipe. The pipe in question was 700mm below a concrete walk way. Because of the issue, the sites main heating system was not working and they had no heating (in January).  This meant time was of the essence to ensure a quick turnaround. We managed to complete a temporary repair job in the first day to make sure that the facility had heating on that night. Because of the damage caused by the leaking pipe, it took two days to clear rubble and relay new concrete.

Domestic Boiler Replacement

Client: Domestic Client
Completion date: November 2022
HF divisions involved: Plumbing, Heating & AC

Brief project description: With energy prices having skyrocketed in the last year, more and more home owners are understandably looking for ways to cut costs.  But outside of the various methods that you can try to cut home energy costs, there is always the risk that your existing boiler will breakdown or develop a fault.  While our plumbing, heating and AC team are some of the best in the business at boiler repairs, it becomes a lot harder to repair a boiler when said boiler is so old that sourcing new parts is almost impossible.  And that is exactly what happened to one of our customers in Glasgow this month.  Their Potterton boiler had developed a fault and replacement parts were not available as the manufacturer had stopped making them a number of years ago.  The only solution was to install a new boiler for the customer.

Their existing boiler had a fitted water storage heater (hence the size) so our engineers recommended a new Worcester combi boiler that would be able to closely match the clients existing hot water demands.

As you can see from the photos, while the new system does not have a water storage tank, boiler technology has come along way since their existing Potterton boiler had been installed.  The new system helps to free up space in the customers downstairs cupboard which was previously taken up by the old boiler.

before and after of boiler installation

The installation was made complete with a Worcester Filter. Similar to other magnetic filters on the market but designed to work better with Worcester products, the new boiler and filter system will help to lower the monthly gas bills for the customer while ensuring that their homes radiators run smoothly and efficiently.

The new boiler operates using a Google Nest Thermostat which we also installed. The thermostat in a property plays a hugely important role in energy use. Your thermostat controls up to 60% of your energy bill!

The Nest Thermostat learns your home habits and gets to know the temperature you like when you’re at home while turning itself down when you’re away. It even learns how your home warms up or how draughty it is, so it only uses the energy it needs. Just another great example of modern technology that can help us lower our energy costs.

Project Challenges: As with all boiler installations, access was an issue. The boiler was located in a downstairs cupboard and due to its size, removing the unit was a challenge to ensure that we did not damage any of the customers property. Thankfully, the existing gas pipework in the home was up to modern standards so this was a relatively straightforward boiler install for our Plumbing, heating & AC team.

Queen Anne School

Client: Queen Anne School / Sodexo
Project length: 5 weeks
Completion date: August 2022
HF divisions involved: Mechanical, Plumbing, Heating & AC

Brief project description: HF were contracted to carry out the servicing work for Queen Anne School in Dunfermline earlier in the year.  Upon our initial site inspection and servicing work for the Air Conditioning system, we found the existing system was beyond repair. We costed up the installation of a new energy efficient Daikin air conditioning system which was agreed with the client before we then arranged for the installation works to be carried out during the summer holiday shut down period. This was done so that we could complete the work without interrupting day to day school classroom activities.

Works consisted of supplying and installing 2 nr outdoor units and 16 nr indoor ceiling mounted units complete with new room controllers.

The pipework and control cables of the existing air conditioning system were stripped out in their entirety and replaced with new pipework and cabling. The ceilings where new indoor mounted units were to be fitted had to be opened up along with the walls to allow the new pipework to be concealed.

Once the installation work was complete, all the openings were made good and re-painted to leave the site as we had found it.

Works were carried out and commissioned in time for the school opening again and works were completed on budget.

Project Challenges: The main challenge with this project was time.  The work had to be completed during the school summer holidays and all installation work had to be completed in ample time to allow the re-painting work and finishing touches to be completed before the school re-opened for the new term.  The project was completed on time so that the returning classes could now enjoy air conditioned classrooms for the hot weather ahead.

University Hospital Wishaw

Client: University Hospital Wishaw
Project length: 12 weeks
Completion date: July 2022
HF divisions involved: Mechanical, Plumbing, Heating & AC

Brief project description: Our Mechanical division were contracted to carry out the installation of new Thermal Balancing Valves to assist with the circulation of the Domestic Hot Water services at the University Hospital Wishaw.

Domestic Hot Water should circulate at 55 degrees Celsius or above to minimise the risk of legionella bacteria forming in the pipework. Maintaining this higher temperature kills of the bacteria and is an essential system for environments like hospitals.

Project Challenges: These works were carried out in a live hospital environment so forward planning and constant communication and consulting with hospital staff was a top priority.

As we were working in a live environment, we were unable to shut off water supplies to the hospital wards and instead had to get creative.  We had to locally freeze sections of pipe and install the Thermal Balancing Valves that had been dipped in Sanisil solution (a universal antiviral disinfectant based on hydrogen peroxide and silver) prior to installing to ensure the valves were sterilised and the system cleanliness was not compromised.

On completion of individual Hospital Wards, we took water samples and sent them to the lab to ensure the water quality and that no bacteria was present.

On completion of all works, we issued as installed drawings with valve locations identified so that the hospitals onsite maintenance staff can check the return temperatures regularly and ensure their water system is compliant and legionella free.

Atik Nightclub

Client: Atik Nightclub
Project length: 2 weeks
Completion date: July 2022
HF divisions involved: Mechanical, Plumbing, Heating & AC

Brief project description: Atik is situated in one of Edinburgh’s oldest nightclub buildings in Edinburgh. Over the last 20 years, we have been involved in the electrical and mechanical work on the building through its various re-incarnations.

In its current set up, our Mechanical Division were contracted to supply and fit a brand new Mitsubishi Air-Conditioning System to the bar areas of the nightclub.

mitubishi approved installer

The club required this new air conditioning system because their existing unit had begun to deteriorate and would in the not too distant future not be economically viable to maintain anymore.  One of our service engineers had highlighted the issue to the client in one of our condition reports during a recent service and this prompted them to take action now rather than wait until the unit failed.

Our Mechanical Engineers surveyed the site and at the clients request, sourced new energy efficient air conditioning units that best fit the clients operational needs and building size. We safely removed the existing air conditioning system and fitted the brand new unit to the high standards expected of us; ensuring that all future guests of the Atik Nightclub can have a great night in the comfort of an air conditioned environment.

Project Challenges: As with any work we do in the hospitality sector, time matters.  A nightclub like Atik can not afford any downtime so our engineers had to work around the schedule of the venue itself.  Our experience working for pubs, clubs, restaurants and hotels across the country with a complete range of Electrical, Plumbing, Heating and Fire & Security Services means that we are more than able to handle even the toughest of timelines to suit our customers needs.

Scottish Canals / Transport Scotland

scottish canals control system

Client: Scottish Canals/Transport Scotland
Project length: Ongoing contract
HF divisions involved: Automated Controls, Mechanical

Brief project description: HF Controls were successfully awarded the tender contract to complete essential electrical automation upgrades for multiple swing bridge sites that make up the historic Caledonia Canal System.

Stretching 60 miles along the Great Glen from Fort William to Inverness, the Caledonian Canal passes through Towns, Villages and vast Scottish Countryside in the Highlands of Scotland.

The existing system of swing bridges, some as old as 1936 (the Caledonian Canal was originally opened in 1822) was necessary to ensure the continued and safe use of the swing bridges across the canal route while helping to electrically automate the system.
The ongoing project involved the upgrading of the Wig Wags, the early warning signal system, vehicle traffic barriers and each individual sites entire control system.

Our sister Mechanical division in HF were used as part of the site work, maintaining air conditioning systems for control room sites where necessary.

Project Challenges: The work could only be conducted during periods of canal closure in the winter ‘off season’. This brought with it the familiar challenges of Scottish winter weather.

Our controls division had to work on swing bridge sites, sometimes in sub zero conditions. Due to the swing bridge locations, sites were often to dangerous to access because of ice on the roads, heavy snow build up and road closures. All of which are constant problems for road networks in the Highlands.

Pure Gym (Hope Street)

Client: Pure Gym (Hope Street Location)
Project length: 1 day
Completion date: July 2022
HF divisions involved: Electrical, Mechanical, Plumbing, Heating & AC

Brief project description: The Pure Gym on Hope Street in Glasgow had to temporarily close over a weekend in July because the Gyms water system booster pump had failed causing the entire building to have no hot or cold running water.

Our Mechanical Engineers were called out on the Monday and quickly diagnosed the issue.  The solution required a new booster pump motor and invertor however the lead time for these parts would be 8-10 weeks!

The Hope Street Pure Gym is one of the brands busiest locations in Glasgow and being closed for any length of time was simply not an option.  Our Mechanical Engineers carried out a temporary repair that bypassed the pump set so that the gym had cold and hot running water again (though not to the same level as they normally require).  This temporary solution allowed the gym to reopen again.

Due to the importance of keeping the business open and at the high standards expected, it was decided that a completely new pump set would be installed rather than wait the 8-10 weeks for the replacement parts.

We carried out the fitting of the replacement pump set and conducted necessary tests on the new device to ensure that it was installed correctly.

The Pure Gym is now up and running again at full capabilities thanks to a combination of intelligent thinking from our on call team to conduct a bypass and our installation team for fitting a new pump set so quickly.

Project Challenges: The previous pump set which had broken was a 3 phase unit.  The new pump unit to be fitted was a single phase pump unit. We required the assistance of our Electrician colleagues to convert the new pump set to run to single phase.

Special Mention: What makes this job of particular interest is the short timeline. We were initially called to the site on the 18th of the month and submitted a quote for the work and new pump unit on the 19th.  The quote was accepted on the 20th and all the work was completed on the 21st.  This is testament to the incredible work our team in Mechanical and Electrical do day in, day out. HF’s family culture means much more than dates and numbers. It’s quite literally, the core of the business. We consider all of our employees as part of the family and invaluable assets to our ongoing success.

Miller & Carter Steakhouse

Client: Miller & Carter Steakhouse
Project length: 1 day
Project value: £24K
Completion date: June 2022
HF divisions involved: Electrical, Mechanical

Brief project description: We were contracted to complete the mechanical, plumbing, heating and electrical work for the Miller & Carter Steakhouse location in Edinburgh.

Our Mechanical & Electrical team operating out of our Edinburgh Branch completed the fit out of the new bathroom/toilet areas in the restaurant including new sinks, urinals and seated toilets.

Our electrical division completed the electrical wiring and fitting of new LED lighting across the restaurant.

The Steakhouse also required the fitting for a new gas stove that was a ‘feature piece’ of the restaurant. Our Gas Safe registered team were able to complete the work.

Project Challenges: As with any work completed in hospitality venues, timelines are always tight. There was a large amount of work to be completed in a very short space of time.

At HF, we supply pubs, clubs, restaurants and hotels across the country with a complete range of ElectricalMechanicalPlumbing, Heating and Fire & Security Services. The existing swimming pool at the hotel was refurbished with new LED lighting and emergency lighting system installed.

Additional electrical installation work took place in the treatment rooms, changing rooms, toilets and Spa reception. We also installed electrical designer radiators as part of a new heating system in the Spa.

Our Mechanical Division were responsible for the installation of a brand new air conditioning system as well as the design and fitting of new ventilation system for the Swimming Pool and Spa area.

After-Pic
The Swimming Pool area after we have completed our work
After-Pic-2

Project Challenges:
The entire project had to be completed while the main hotel was still operational.  This meant that our Electrical and Mechanical work had to be scheduled around busy hotel activities during the course of the day to ensure minimise disruption both to the hotel staff but also, most importantly for the hotel guests.

This was particularly challenging when we have to shut off the electrical supply to the entire hotel which was necessary in order to connect the Hotel and Spa Distribution Boards.

Working in a specialist environment such as a swimming pool is deemed as a ‘Special Installations of Locations’ job that forms a significant part of the Requirements for Electrical Installation. This means that we have to follow strict installation guidelines to ensure that all electrical installation work was fully compliant with current standards.

electrical contractor for commercial work

Electrical – Our electrical division were responsible for the complete installation of brand new mains power source, including upgraded CT metering and the installation of Distribution Boards throughout the building. As part of the complete rewiring of the building, we also fitted new electrical wiring from local distribution boards to new LED light fittings (and refurbished and upgraded fittings) as well as additional small power outlets.

The architectural designs required for the job included dimming controlled lighting in set ground and first floor open plan areas.

Working alongside our Mechanical division, we were responsible for the installation of new commercial kitchen equipment and the installation of Smoke Vent controls (required by our Fire & Security Division) that were connected to the roof Velux windows with main and remote panels located as required.

An elevator was installed by a specialist lift fitting contractor and to ensure the building was compliant, we a installed disabled refuge system on all main and half landing levels of the building that can be used in the event of an emergency.

We ensured that we stayed in close contact with our fellow contractors within HF to assist with power supplies and control requirements where necessary.

mechanical contractor for hvac plumbing and heating services

Mechanical – Our Mechanical Division were tasked with the installation of the buildings brand new central heating system and plumbing system.  This included everything from new combi boilers to radiators, pipping, sink units, toilets and showers.

Because of the age of the building, we fitted a new Gas supply for both boilers and kitchen cooking equipment.

Our HVAC team were also tasked with installing new ventilation and extraction systems throughout the building.

fire & security installers

Fire & Security – Our Fire & Security engineers installed a brand new L2 fire alarm system throughout the building that connected to various Mechanical installed gas systems.  We fitted a variety of Security devices and CCTV cameras across the site ranging from tamper alarms on windows to motion sensors in hallways, bell boxes and security lighting outside. We installed video and pin code Access Control Systems that use simple to operate control handsets installed and interlinked across all offices throughout the building.

Controls Jobs

Controls – Our Automated Controls team were contracted to design, build and install a main control panel for the site that would be located within the plant room of the building. The control system included wire to all valves and pumps and was linked with newly installed zonal thermostats throughout all levels of the structure. The controls system our team designed included built and wired controls for kitchen extract and intake fans as well as heating battery controls for both the kitchen and ground floor toilet areas.

Project Challenges:
The architect/interior designers wanted to keep the authentic rustic look and feel of the original school building where possible.  This meant that we had to work around existing interior design features. The Kinning Park Complex was originally built in 1910 as the science block of Lambhill Street Secondary School.  Due to the age of the building, difficult access restrictions and the complex nature of rewiring such an old building while installing new plumbing and heating systems – all while ensuring that the building met the latest fire and security standards –  understandably had its challenges.  But as ‘A Company Well Connected’, we can provide Electrical, Mechanical, Fire & Security as well as Control System services all under the one roof.  This means that through experience, skill and inhouse communication, our team were able to work through any obstacle that popped up during the site fitting.

All Bar One

Client: All Bar One / Mitchells and Butlers
Project length: 19 days
Completion date: November 2021
HF divisions involved: Electrical, Mechanical, Fire & Security

Brief project description: We completed the electrical refurbishment of the Glasgow All Bar One ground and first floor public areas. Our work also required expertise from our Mechanical and Fire & Security divisions for the Plumbing Fittings and Fire & Safety Testing of the newly refurbished Restaurant and Bar in Glasgow City Centre.

The electrical work required the replacement of all existing wall and pendant light fittings in the public areas. These were replaced with new, client sourced, light fittings. We were also tasked with the installation of centre piece LED lighting used for ‘feature columns’ in the public spaces. These ‘feature columns’ form a big visual element of the interior design layout of the refurbishment of the restaurant/bar.

Additional lighting units were fitted to replace the existing track lighting units in the public spaces and we installed LED lighting strips to the back bar gantry, front bar area, masterclass bar and upstairs cabinets to help the restaurant/bar area ‘mood lighting’.

The newly fitted lighting systems were all connected through a Tiger dimming system which replaced the Bars existing individual dimmers for lighting circuits. This new system now allows the All Bar One hospitality team to set specific lighting scenes dependant on time of day.

Our electrical team also fitted new plug sockets throughout the premises, all of which came with decorative twin USB sockets.

Our Mechanical Division were tasked with all the new plumbing fittings work for the new kitchen area.  We also provided all of the plumbing fittings for the public washrooms in the venue.

Our Fire & Security Division completed the Fire Risk Assessment work for the newly refurbished Bar/Restaurant and completed successful testing of the Fire Alarm System.

Project Challenges: This project was completed in Glasgow City centre while the COP26 conference was taking place.  This meant that our electrical, mechanical and fire & security team had to deal with the many road closures in Glasgow as well as other unique obstacles caused during the running of COP26.

The biggest project challenge however was the very tight timescales. All Bar One officially closed for the Bar/Restaurant Refurbishment to commence on Sunday 17th October. The final handover was scheduled to be on Monday 8th November with the venue to re-open on Wednesday 10th. This meant that there was a large amount of work to be done in a very short space of time.

With multiple service contractors (including plumbers, tilers, joinery, decorating and flooring contractors) all present and all working in relatively small spaces, and with a short time scale to complete the project, it was challenging to coordinate our necessary works alongside the other trades and their schedules.

However, as a professional Restaurant/Bar fitters we have worked on many similar projects in the Hospitality & Tourism sector which has given us invaluable experience to allow us to complete this kind of work to these kind of deadlines to specification, on time and to the highest of standards.

before and after of oil tank replacement job

Brief project description: The oil tank for The Lochar Inn’s heating system had been vandalised and had fallen into a state of disrepair.  We were contracted to remove the old oil tank, replace it with a new oil tank, carry out repair work and create a new secure enclosure space as well as arranging for recommissioning testing that is essential for the property to continue trading.

Project Challenges: We found that the existing oil tank was positioned too close to the wooden security fencing which was within 760mm of the tank.  The existing fencing was not fit for purpose and was a fire hazard. As such, this was replaced with metal security fencing complete with gate access that was spaced as per OFTEC requirements.

We also discovered that the tank had been broken into with the tank lid snapped.  The oil tank was of an old, single skin design which, for safety and security reasons was replaced with a new bundled tank unit that comes with a more accurate digital gauge to allow the customer to monitor the oil levels in the tank.
