Brief Project Description: HF recently undertook a comprehensive upgrade of an access control system for a multi-floor facility, replacing the existing Bodet door controllers, relays, and power supply units (PSUs) with advanced Paxton 10 units. This project involved a meticulous process of tracing and utilising existing cabling, repurposing enclosures as junction boxes and extending reader/PoE cables, RTE (Request to Exit) cables and lock cables to their respective Paxton 10 controllers.
Our fire & security engineers installed a new Paxton 10 system throughout the site. The transition to the Paxton 10 system was seamless, with all existing RTE/BG combinations retained and incorporated into the new setup. These were thoroughly tested to ensure full functionality.
As part of the security enhancements, new electric strikes were installed on multiple floors of the building.
At the main entrance, we retained the existing magnet/shear lock combination (as well as in the garden, kitchen door and bike store area) and upgraded the existing Paxton Access panel into a Paxton 10 system as the existing system was incompatible due to its age, necessitating the upgrade.
The buildings elevator also received a new Paxton 10 controller fitted to the existing junction box on the car roof, ensuring secure access to designated floors via card authentication.
Project Challenges: While the project was a success, it was not without its challenges. One of the primary difficulties was working with the existing fire & security infrastructure. Some older components that were fitted were incompatible with the new system. This meant that our team had to carefully assess each element and determine whether to integrate or replace it, ensuring a balance between efficiency and cost-effectiveness for the client
Another challenge was the complex nature of the site’s cabling. Tracing and repurposing existing wiring required precision and patience, particularly when extending cables to the new controllers. The team encountered situations where cabling had to be rerouted or extended in ways that minimised disruption to the site’s operations. Additionally, the integration of the fire alarm interface within the bin store posed a technical challenge, as it required precise coordination to ensure that all doors would unlock correctly upon fire activation. Rigorous testing was conducted to verify the system’s reliability in an emergency scenario.
Despite these obstacles, our Fire & Security’s expertise and problem-solving approach enabled the successful deployment of the Paxton 10 system without major disruptions. The project was completed within schedule, demonstrating our team’s ability to adapt and overcome challenges efficiently.
The successful completion of this project is a testament to our teams expertise in delivering high-quality security solutions. As one of the leading fire and security contractors in the UK, we provide nationwide, 24/7 call-out services and monitoring, ensuring that businesses and facilities remain secure at all times. With a commitment to innovation, reliability, and safety, HF Fire & Security continues to set the benchmark for excellence in the industry.

Our Fire & Security team played a vital role in the project by making fire alarm alterations to comply with building control requirements. These modifications ensured the venue met all necessary safety standards while integrating seamlessly with the updated design.
Project Challenges: One of the primary challenges of this project was working within the constraints of a heritage building. The team had to carefully navigate existing infrastructure while ensuring that all new installations were compliant with safety regulations and the specific requirements of the new darts venue. HF’s experience with complex installations allowed the team to quickly adapt and resolve challenges in a timely and cost-effective manner.
The Arrow Smiths darts venue at O’Neill’s is now a state-of-the-art facility offering a unique and entertaining experience for visitors. Client: RNLI
Completion date: October 24
HF divisions involved: Fire & Security
The RNLI (Royal National Lifeboat Institution) base in Perth needed an upgrade to its existing CCTV system to improve overall security, especially along the site perimeter. Their previous setup, an analogue CCTV system, had limited capabilities in terms of image clarity and coverage and this lack of comprehensive monitoring posed potential security risks to the facility. Our Fire & Security Engineers were called in to assess the site and install a modernised, high-definition CCTV system that would cover critical areas and ensure round-the-clock protection.
The key objectives of the project were to replace outdated analogue cameras with high-definition digital ones to enhance image quality and add new cameras to address coverage issues around the facility to strengthen perimeter protection. We started by removing the base’s older analogue cameras, replacing them with high-definition (HD) static bullet cameras. These HD cameras provide clearer images, essential for precise identification and monitoring, especially in areas where quick response may be required. The shift from analogue to digital technology also enables better image processing and remote monitoring capabilities, crucial for effective security.
To maximize coverage, our fire & security engineers conducted a comprehensive assessment of the RNLI base’s layout. We strategically positioned new cameras to ensure there were no blind spots. With these additional cameras, the base now benefits from seamless surveillance and enhanced security.
The high-definition static bullet cameras provide a clear, uninterrupted view of the surrounding area, allowing for better incident detection and acting as a visible deterrent to unauthorised access. By strengthening perimeter protection, we haveadded a vital layer of security to the base, giving RNLI staff greater peace of mind.
Project Challenges: Transitioning from an analogue to digital system presented an initial challenge for our engineers as we needed to ensure that there was no disruption to daily operations at the RNLI base. This meant that the decommissioning of the existing cameras and installation of new cameras had to be scheduled to ensure that all critical areas of the site, especially the perimeter were thoroughly covered with no blind spots.
Because we were upgrading the site from an old analogue system to state of the art digital security system, we had to ensure that the RNLI staff were properly educated on the benefits of HD digital systems over their legacy analogue setup.
Security is only as strong as the quality of its surveillance equipment. With the advances in modern security technology, older analogue systems are increasingly vulnerable, lacking the resolution and capabilities of today’s HD systems. At HF, we focus on installing high-quality, reliable surveillance technology for clients like RNLI which provides them with sharp, detailed visuals and faster response times. When it comes to security, quality matters, and our team emphasises this with every installation.
In addition to the upgraded system, we can offer the RNLI base our Manned 24 Hour Call-out Services, ensuring that support is always available whenever needed. Security systems occasionally face unforeseen issues, and our round-the-clock service means minimal downtime and immediate response to any problems, safeguarding the facility at all times.
With the CCTV upgrade work complete, the RNLI site now boasts improved Security Coverage. With new cameras addressing all previous security vulnerabilities, the RNLI base now enjoys comprehensive coverage across critical areas and the perimeter. This extensive surveillance capability greatly reduces the risk of undetected intrusions and strengthens the facility’s overall security. The newly installed HD bullet cameras deliver exceptional image clarity, far surpassing the quality of the previous analogue system. This is essential for detailed monitoring and effective incident response, giving the RNLI staff a more reliable and actionable surveillance solution. Upgrading from analogue to digital has provided the RNLI base with a future-proof system that can adapt to new security needs. Digital systems offer greater flexibility and can integrate advanced features, such as motion detection and remote access, which are invaluable for a responsive security environment.
With out commitment to delivering high-quality, customised security solutions, we have enabled the RNLI base in Perth to operate with greater security and confidence. With advancing technology, older systems can leave facilities vulnerable. Our Fire & Security team can conduct a thorough review of your current security setup and recommend tailored upgrades. Contact us today to discuss how we can enhance your security system, providing you with peace of mind and 24/7 support.
Client: Fettes College
HF divisions involved: Fire & Security
Project Description: Fettes College, one of Scotland’s most prestigious independent schools, approached our Fire & Security team with a need to enhance its security infrastructure. With over 1,000 students, staff, and visitors accessing the campus daily, maintaining high levels of safety and access control is a top priority for the college. After conducting an initial survey, we were commissioned to install a comprehensive access control system across 40 internal doors and 9 external vehicle and pedestrian gates, using an advanced Paxton 10 system.
As a large educational institution, Fettes College required a solution that would ensure safety for students, staff, and visitors by restricting unauthorized access. The new system had to embrace simplicity with management by centralising control over multiple entry points, both internal and external.
And on top of that, it had to provide flexibility for staff and students with varying access levels, ensuring smooth daily operations while offering enhanced security around the perimeter of the school to protect against external threats and ensuring controlled vehicle and pedestrian access.
As with any security system installation, we ensured that the new package will support scalability for future expansion and upgrades as the campus grows or security needs change.
Project Challenges: One of the primary challenges faced during this project was the need to complete the installation during the school holidays. This timeline was strategically chosen to ensure that the work could be carried out without disrupting the students and staff. Coordinating the project to take place during a limited window of time required advanced planning. We had to ensure that all materials and equipment were available and that our team was fully prepared to execute the installation efficiently within the holiday period.
With some areas of the campus remaining operational for maintenance and administrative functions, our team had to work around these restrictions while still ensuring that the installation met all safety and quality standards.
Even though students were not present, safety always remains a top priority for the entire HF Group. We implemented strict safety protocols and procedures to ensure that our team could work without incident, minimising any potential hazards during the installation process.
Completing integration testing and ensuring that all systems were fully functional before the students returned was critical. We had to thoroughly check every access point to guarantee that the system would operate seamlessly, providing a reliable security solution from day one.
By addressing these challenges head-on, we were able to successfully complete the installation on time, ensuring that Fettes College was fully equipped with an advanced security solution before the new school year began.
The new security access control system we installed was a Paxton 10 access control system, an integrated platform that offers both access control and video management, providing an all-in-one security solution.
Access Control for 40 Internal Doors:
Paxton 10 readers were installed across 40 key areas within the college, including classrooms, staff offices, and sensitive administrative areas. This system allows the school to manage who has access to specific zones, ensuring that only authorised personnel can enter certain areas. The system also allows time-specific access, meaning that doors can automatically lock and unlock at pre-set times according to the school’s schedule.
9 External Gates for Vehicle and Pedestrian Access:
To secure the perimeter, we fitted the system on 9 external gates, ensuring controlled entry for both vehicles and pedestrians. The system allows school security to monitor and manage who enters the campus, restricting entry after hours or during events. Paxton 10’s integration with external gates also ensures swift lockdown protocols in case of emergency situations.
Centralised Management:
Paxton 10 provides a cloud-based management platform, giving school administrators the ability to monitor all access points remotely in real-time. Any unauthorised access attempts trigger instant alerts, enhancing response times. This level of control ensures that the security team at Fettes College can manage the entire campus from a single dashboard, streamlining operations and ensuring that no area is overlooked.
The system we installed is designed to grow with the school. As Fettes College expands or needs to upgrade its security features, Paxton 10 offers seamless scalability, allowing more doors, gates, and features to be added without replacing the existing infrastructure.
In educational environments like Fettes College, the importance of robust access control systems cannot be overstated. Schools must not only protect their students, staff, and assets but also create an environment where learning can take place free from external threats. Modern access control systems offer:
Safety and Security: Restricting access to sensitive areas ensures that only authorised personnel and students can enter, reducing the risk of theft, vandalism, or more serious threats.
Student Protection: A robust security system helps protect students from external dangers, such as unauthorised visitors, while allowing staff to respond swiftly to emergencies.
Operational Efficiency: Integrated systems like Paxton 10 simplify the management of school facilities by centralising control, improving response times, and reducing administrative overhead.
For schools like Fettes College, a tailored security solution offers peace of mind that the campus remains secure and adaptable to any future needs.

They sought a comprehensive system that could seamlessly integrate access control, CCTV surveillance, and an intruder alarm system to ensure comprehensive protection against potential threats.
The client faced several challenges, including the need for a scalable and easily manageable security system that could adapt to their evolving needs. They required a solution that could provide real-time monitoring, remote access control, and seamless integration with their existing infrastructure.
Challenged to produce a tailor made solution that both fitted their needs for today but was also scalable for the companies future growth plans, we recommended that they embrace a cloud based security system.
With cloud based security systems, the business can benefit from AI-powered analytics and fully integrated technology to offer the client next level security technology.
Our Fire & Security team were tasked with fitting new Access Control Systems, CCTV and Intruder Alarm. The work included:
Utilising state-of-the-art IP/cloud-based technology, we deployed 2N access control devices renowned for their sleek design and advanced features. The access control system was seamlessly programmed via The My2N Management platform, providing the client with centralised control and management capabilities. Leveraging Bluetooth capabilities, the system enables secure and convenient access for authorised personnel.
We installed a range of CCTV camera across the site offering comprehensive monitoring of every access event, tracking its occurrence time and location, utilising robust, interoperable readers, cameras, and cloud-native software.
The CCTV cameras and related software oversee the entire system by linking video hardware with entry points. It allows the client to observe real-time access activity alongside live footage through integrated and customisable management dashboards, accessible from any device. This gives the on site security teams valuable operational insights through real-time reporting and custom AI-powered alerts and gives them visual verification of events on any device, from any location worldwide.
We implemented a hybrid intruder alarm panel that combined hardwired and radio devices to provide comprehensive coverage across the client’s premises. Multiple access points and keypads were strategically installed to ensure ease of use and accessibility for authorised personnel.
Leveraging the Eaton cloud management portal, we enabled remote monitoring, diagnostics, and servicing, empowering the client to maintain optimal security posture with minimal hassle.
We successfully addressed the client’s security needs by implementing a comprehensive solution that integrated access control, CCTV surveillance, and intruder alarm systems. By leveraging cutting-edge technology and innovative features, we provided the client with a scalable, easily manageable, and highly effective security infrastructure tailored to their specific requirements.

Client: S Norton
Completion date: April 2024
HF divisions involved: Fire & Security
S Norton is a leading scrap metal recycling company with a commitment to environmental sustainability and operational excellence. Operating across various locations, their River Clyde site is pivotal in their operations yet the site faced a critical need for enhancing safety measures, particularly concerning emergency lighting. With a significant portion of their operations housed in out-buildings and offices, ensuring safe exit during power failures became imperative.
Our Fire & Security team undertook the task of upgrading emergency lighting systems at the S Norton River Clyde site. Understanding the unique requirements of the client, we installed new emergency lighting systems tailored to their needs.
The solution comprised a strategic combination of twin spot and bulkhead fittings installed throughout the office and out-buildings. This approach ensured comprehensive coverage of the site, offering the S Norton team safe exit routes in the event of power failures or emergency situations.
Twin Spot Fittings: Positioned strategically to provide high-intensity illumination, twin spot fittings were installed in critical areas to ensure clear visibility and safe passage during emergencies.
Bulkhead Fittings: Deployed in corridors, stairwells, and other key pathways, bulkhead fittings provided reliable and consistent illumination, facilitating smooth evacuation procedures.
The new emergency lighting installation is integrated with Power Backup Systems, guaranteeing uninterrupted operation even during power outages.
We ensured that all installations complied with relevant safety regulations and standards, providing S Norton with peace of mind regarding regulatory compliance.
The upgraded emergency lighting system significantly improves the safety of the site, providing employees with clear and illuminated egress routes during emergencies. By adhering to regulatory requirements, S Norton mitigated the risk of non-compliance and associated penalties.
Project Challenges: While we often come across and then overcome many challenges during fire & security installation work, this project was relatively straightforward. The main challenge was ensuring that all work was completed safely during working hours with S Norton staff on site.
The successful implementation of the emergency lighting upgrade at the S Norton River Clyde site exemplifies our dedication to delivering tailored solutions that address the unique needs of their clients. By prioritising safety, compliance, and operational continuity, we continue to be a trusted partner in safeguarding businesses against potential risks and threats. Our Fire and Security Services are NSI Gold and NSI Fire Gold accredited and we can design, install and offer maintenance contracts for Fire Systems, Access Control Systems, CCTV and Intruder Alarms nationwide.

Client: Domestic Client
Completion date: March 2024
HF divisions involved: Fire & Security
Brief project description: We recently undertook a project to upgrade the CCTV cameras for a domestic client in Carluke. The client sought to enhance their surveillance capabilities to better safeguard their premises and turned to HF to help them upgrade their existing security system. The client expressed the need to upgrade their existing CCTV cameras to newer models capable of full-colour recording round-the-clock. Their primary objective was to bolster their security measures by deploying advanced technology that could serve as a potent deterrent against potential intruders, both during the day and at night.
Our Fire & Security Engineer replaced the existing CCTV cameras with new CCTV cameras that seamlessly integrated with the existing security infrastructure. The new CCTV cameras offer superior image clarity and low-light performance to effectively monitor the premises day and night.
Our fire & security engineers meticulously configured the cameras to synchronise with the client’s network, enabling centralised monitoring and management. The new CCTV cameras are fitted strategically across the client’s premises to maximise coverage and minimise blind spots.
Project Challenges: The main challenge was to ensure that the new CCTV cameras integrated with the clients existing home security system. Adhering to strict quality standards and industry best practices, we successfully completed the upgrade work and the clients home security system now offers a stronger deterrent against intruders, giving them peace of mind knowing that their premises were effectively safeguarded against potential threats, day and night.
Our Fire & Security Services are backed up with NSI Gold and NSI Fire Gold accreditation so that we can operate to the highest possible industry standard and guidelines across the UK.

Client: The Murrayfield Bar & Kitchen
Completion date: February 2024
HF divisions involved: Fire & Security
Brief project description: Murrayfield Bar & Kitchen is a popular establishment located in Edinburgh. Renowned for its vibrant atmosphere and just round the corner from the home of Scottish Rugby, the bar attracts a large number of patrons daily. However, to ensure the safety and security of both staff and customers, the management recognised the need for an upgraded intruder alarm system. Step forward our fire & security team.
The existing intruder alarm system at Murrayfield Bar & Kitchen was outdated and unreliable, posing a potential risk to the establishment’s security. Certain areas of the premises were not adequately covered by the existing system, leaving vulnerabilities that needed to be addressed and the client desired a modern intruder alarm system that could seamlessly integrate with their existing security infrastructure, including CCTV cameras and access control systems.
Our Fire & Security engineers conducted a comprehensive assessment of the premises and collaborated closely with the management of Murrayfield Bar & Kitchen to develop a tailored solution integrating the new system with the existing security infrastructure, ensuring seamless communication and centralised management. We completed the upgrade work on their intruder alarm system within the quoted time to ensure that their staff and premises are protected for the future.
Project Challenges: The main challenge with this intruder alarm upgrade was ensuring that all of the work was completed to a specified schedule working around the 6 Nations Rugby Fixtures. The Murrayfield Bar & Kitchen is a popular establishment for rugby fans both before and after Scotland home fixtures so our work had to be completed around the 2024 fixture list, ensuring no disruption to the business during these peak time periods. With our experience of installations, maintenance and alarm upgrades in the hospitality sector, our engineers we able to easily work around the required time restraints of the Edinburgh Bar & Kitchen.

Client: Scotmid Co-Op
Project Length: 3 weeks
Completion date: September 2023
HF divisions involved: Fire & Security
Brief project description: At the end of September, Scotmid officially opened their latest store in the mixed use development in Heartlands, West Lothian. The 4000sqft store features all of the usual produce and goods that Scotmid is famous for and our Fire & Security team were tasked with completing the complete fire and security system installation for the new store.
Our engineers installed the full compliment of Fire Alarm, Intruder Security System, Access Control Systems, CCTV and Fog Bandit.
Fog Bandit is a fantastic system that operates on the simple philosophy of ‘if you can’t see it, you can’t steal it’. The smoke system, when activated quickly fills a room with safe high density fog that leaves no residue. Alongside our other security features including motion detection and magnetic lock systems, this latest Scotmid store is armed with the latest in anti theft security systems.
We also supplied and installed a new L1 Fire Alarm System that includes automatic fire detection as well as sounders present throughout the new fit out that achieve a minimum sound level of 65dB(A).
The CCTV system allows the store to monitor the entire building and the access control system ensures that only authorised personnel can access restricted areas such as the stock room.
Project Challenges: Because this was a new store fit out in a brand new building, we had a lot more freedom to install all of the fire & security systems than we might have in a historic building that has existing wiring and installations. The biggest challenge was the deadline. The Scotmid had a fixed opening date so we had to ensure that all of the fire & security installation work was completed in time for the store to be fully fitted out and prepared for the grand opening.
Our Fire & Security Services are backed up with NSI Gold and NSI Fire Gold accreditation so that we can operate to the highest possible industry standard and guidelines across the UK. Combining this with the in house knowledge and service level capabilities that HF is famous for means we can take care of all your fire and security services 24/7.
With clients ranging from one off domestic properties to single unit business, all the way to large High St. brands.
We firmly believe in excellent client communication and throughout the entire group, we put this at the hub of everything we do. Our engineers have first-hand knowledge of all projects and vast experience of multi-discipline works. It all adds up to a service fully focused on protection and delivery your requirements on time and on budget – because anything else, quite simply, won’t do. Client: Scotmid Funerals
Project Length: 3 weeks
Completion date: May 2023
HF divisions involved: Fire & Security
Brief project description: The Scotmid store in the small mining town of Prestonpans near Edinburgh was converting part of their existing store layout to create a new ‘Scotmid Funerals’ branch within the existing site layout. The store fit out work required Fire & Security work to be completed which is why Scotmid turned to our Fire & Security division to complete the work.
We supplied and installed a new L1 Fire Alarm System that interfaced with the stores existing system. An L1 BS5839 classification fire alarm system includes automatic fire detection in all rooms, all escape routes and any void area over 800mm in height (unless it is an area of high risk). This particular fire alarm system also included sounders present throughout the new fit out that achieve a minimum sound level of 65dB(A).
Along with the fire alarm system, we also fitted a state of the art IP CCTV system and intruder alarm which runs independently of the main stores system.
Project Challenges: There were minimal challenges with this particular project. Our trained NSI Fire Gold accredited engineers were easily able to interface the existing fire alarm system with the new one that we were fitting while the CCTV and intruder alarm set up were successfully installed followed the required plans set out by Scotmid as part of the project. Because this was a new store built within the existing building floor space, we did not have to deal with existing wiring issues or access restrictions that can commonly present themselves to our fire & security installers on jobs in more historic buildings.

Client: Shortbread House, Edinburgh
Completion date: February 2023
HF divisions involved: Fire & Security
Brief project description: As part of their growth plans, Shortbread House Edinburgh had recently acquired a new premises beside their existing factory unit in Leith. With the new premises, they had a need to secure and protect the site and turned to HF and our Fire & Security division to complete the work.
We carried out the installation of a new Intelligent Fire Alarm System, Intruder Alarm System as well as CCTV for the new premises. As part of the installation, the new fire alarm system allows the customer to individually mark each fire detection point for a more accurate detection system.
These new premises that Shortbread House were moving into had an existing fire & security system that a previous occupier had installed. We were able to network this system and upgraded the intruder alarm to tie in with the newly installed system that we had fitted while also networking the existing fire alarm install.
Project Challenges: The main challenge that our installation team had to overcome was connecting the existing fire alarm system that was already fitted in the premises to the newly installed system that our Fire & Security team had been contracted to install. Fire Alarm Systems are a life saving necessity, especially in a facility like this so it was of the utmost importance that the new system was correctly installed and working reliably connected to existing devices that were already fitted.
Our Fire & Security team offer complete business and personal fire and security solutions. Our Fire and Security Services are NSI Gold and NSI Fire Gold accredited and we can design, install and offer maintenance contracts for Fire Systems, Access Control Systems, CCTV and Intruder Alarms nationwide. Our experience and skill allowed us to easily overcome the challenge of interlinking the existing system with ours and the new fire & security system was successfully installed, tested and commissioned without any problems.
With unrivalled levels of in house knowledge and service level capabilities, we can take care of all your fire and security services through multiple industry sectors across the country. With 24 hour call out service and 24 hour monitoring, our clients range from one off domestic properties or single unit business all the way to large High Street name brands.
At HF, we believe firmly in excellent client communication and the entire division puts this at the centre of everything we do. Client: Gaucho Newcastle
Completion date: March 2023
HF divisions involved: Electrical, Fire & Security
Brief project description: After the successful restaurant fit out work we completed for the new Gaucho restaurant that opened in Glasgow, we were once again contracted to complete the electrical installation of the new Gaucho Argentinian Steakhouse themed restaurant; this time in their new Newcastle location.
The works covered the full electrical wiring and installation work for the restaurant including the installation of new electrical wiring, power, lighting and dimming systems for the restaurant as well as new data wiring that would allow the new venue to have a higher level of security over wireless networks.
On top of the electrical work completed, our Fire & Security division completed the installation of a new Fire Alarm System, a new Intruder Alarm System and fitted a state of the art CCTV system for the restaurant.
The main challenge that we had to deal with during this project was the building itself. The new Gaucho Restaurant is sited in a Grade 2 listed building on Market Street right in the heart of Newcastle Town Centre. As with any historical listed building, there were many obstacles to overcome when we began stripping out old electrical wiring and fittings that had been used by previous tenants of the property. However with such a rich history in electrical installations both in the Hospitality & Tourism sector and on buildings of this vintage, our invaluable experience allowed us to complete the project to specification, on time and to the highest of standards.

Client: Eden Mill, Glasgow
Completion date: February 2023
HF divisions involved: Fire & Security
Established in 2012, Eden Mill have become one of the most popular Premium Gin brands. While based in St Andrews, they also have other sites including a packaging and distribution centre in Glasgow. To ensure the security of this facility, Eden Mill required upgrades to their sites existing security system and turned to our Fire & Security division to complete the security upgrade work. The works included the installation of a new access control system for both the main entrance to the facility as well as for the main warehouse area, the fitting of new CCTV cameras and the installation of a new intruder alarm system and bell box. We also repositioned existing CCTV cameras that had been installed at the premises to ensure better coverage.
The new CCTV cameras that we installed are state of the art and offer a complete 360 degree view of the facility while the access control system now helps to ensure that only designated personnel can access restricted areas.
Project Challenges:
The main challenge with this project was height. The building interior is very high so in order to install the new CCTV camera, we had to use an access platform. Because of the wide open spaces, it was relatively easy to position the mobile platform for each installation location but all work had to be carried out around existing work in the facility to ensure safety.
At HF, we can install the complete range of security systems that business needs to protect their employees and assets including:
Offering peace of mind for businesses looking for a reliable and affordable intruder alarm detection system.
From fire detection systems to control measures such as sprinkler systems to help minimise the risk of fire damage to importance business assets and employees.

And as part of their growth, they have been expanding into a new office in Perth that covers the region. At HF Fire & Security, we have been working with Alzheimer Scotland for a number of years and handle all of their fire & security needs across all of their sites in Scotland.
The new office in Perth is one of 24 sites they have across the country and we were responsible for the installation of a new intruder alarm system, access control system, automatic doors and fire alarm upgrade.
Project Challenges:
As with so many office fit out projects, the main challenges of installing fire & security systems is working around other contractors both in terms of timing and space. Client: Henrys Honda, Glasgow
Project length: 4 weeks
Completion date: November 2022
HF divisions involved: Fire & Security
Honda is one of the most recognisable car brands in the world and has been selling cars and bikes in the UK since 1966.
While Henrys Honda dealership in Glasgow may not have been around for the same length of time, they have been around long enough that the popular dealership in the South Side of Glasgow’s existing fire alarm system was due an upgrade.
The dealership wanted to improve their safety rating while upgrading their existing set up to a modern set up so called on HF Fire & Security to complete the fire alarm upgrade work.
We updated the existing fire alarm system which included the fitting of a new Fire Alarm Panel (FAP) to replace the previous unit along with the installation of new automated fire detectors and new manual call points across the building.
Project Challenges:
It was essential that normal business operations could continue while we carried out the fire alarm upgrade work. This meant that our engineers had to work around the existing day to day business operations of the dealership.
We had to keep the current fire alarm system operational while we completed the installation of new smoke detectors and call points before making the switch over and completing tests at convenient times that would cause no significant disruption to the branches sales and repair operations.
Our Fire & Security Services are backed up with NSI Gold and NSI Fire Gold accreditation so that HF Fire & Security can operate to the highest possible industry standard and guidelines across the UK. Combining this with the in house knowledge and service level capabilities means that trusting HF Fire & Security can take care of all your fire and security services throughout the year and throughout the country.

Client: Macphie
Project length: 6 Weeks
Project value: £44k +
Completion date: May 2022
HF divisions involved: Fire & Security
Brief project description: Our Fire & Security division were commissioned to install a new Fire Alarm System and Intruder Alarm System for the MacPhie food factory in Glasgow.
The client requested a P1 grade Addressable Fire Alarm System to be designed and installed for the protection of production facility. This new fire alarm system was installed to cover the ground floor and first floor offices, the attic space above the main factory production areas as well as all of the additional outbuildings on the site.
Linked to this fire alarm system in the main building was a new aspirating alarm system that provides coverage across the entire production area – nearly 1700m²! This aspirating smoke detector system (FAAS System) was designed to also cover their blast freezer which operates at -25°C.
The fire alarm system included a main control panel with 3 loops connecting over 150 devices including the aspirating system with two dual channel FAAST units, each with 4 detection zones set up to provide complete coverage of the main production hall.
Finally we installed a Grade 2 level of Intruder Alarm System. Grade 2 alarm systems offer an additional level of security over Grade 1 systems thanks to more sophisticated technology and are a more reliable set up. Grade 2 alarms offer more of a challenge for burglars who posses some level of experience and knowledge in what they are doing. Grade 2 alarm systems protect against multiple entry points in a building and are far more suitable for many commercial properties such as this.
Project Challenges:
Installing the aspirating smoke detector system across the production area and blast freezer was a design challenge. However, as ‘A Company Well Connected’, we were able to draw on the experience and skills of our Mechanical division and their commercial freezer installation work to design an aspirating system that would work properly through these areas.
The HF Group of companies offers clients an unsurpassed level of genuinely in-house capabilities and senior-level hands-on management from initial planning to final handover. Hugh M Fulton – Group Chairman says:
Client: Kinning Park Complex
Project length: 20 weeks
Project value: £700k +
Completion date: March 2022
HF divisions involved: Electrical, Mechanical, Plumbing, Heating & AC, Fire & Security, Automated Controls
Brief project description: HF were contracted to complete the Electrical, Mechanical and Fire & Security work for the refurbishment of the old Kinning Park Primary School that has been used as a local community centre since 1979. The job required multiple divisions of the HF Group included Automated Controls to be utilised as we help convert the historic building up to modern standards.
Electrical – Our electrical division were responsible for the complete installation of brand new mains power source, including upgraded CT metering and the installation of Distribution Boards throughout the building. As part of the complete rewiring of the building, we also fitted new electrical wiring from local distribution boards to new LED light fittings (and refurbished and upgraded fittings) as well as additional small power outlets.
The architectural designs required for the job included dimming controlled lighting in set ground and first floor open plan areas.
Working alongside our Mechanical division, we were responsible for the installation of new commercial kitchen equipment and the installation of Smoke Vent controls (required by our Fire & Security Division) that were connected to the roof Velux windows with main and remote panels located as required.
An elevator was installed by a specialist lift fitting contractor and to ensure the building was compliant, we a installed disabled refuge system on all main and half landing levels of the building that can be used in the event of an emergency.
We ensured that we stayed in close contact with our fellow contractors within HF to assist with power supplies and control requirements where necessary.
Mechanical – Our Mechanical Division were tasked with the installation of the buildings brand new central heating system and plumbing system. This included everything from new combi boilers to radiators, pipping, sink units, toilets and showers.
Because of the age of the building, we fitted a new Gas supply for both boilers and kitchen cooking equipment.
Our HVAC team were also tasked with installing new ventilation and extraction systems throughout the building.
Fire & Security – Our Fire & Security engineers installed a brand new L2 fire alarm system throughout the building that connected to various Mechanical installed gas systems. We fitted a variety of Security devices and CCTV cameras across the site ranging from tamper alarms on windows to motion sensors in hallways, bell boxes and security lighting outside. We installed video and pin code Access Control Systems that use simple to operate control handsets installed and interlinked across all offices throughout the building.
Controls – Our Automated Controls team were contracted to design, build and install a main control panel for the site that would be located within the plant room of the building. The control system included wire to all valves and pumps and was linked with newly installed zonal thermostats throughout all levels of the structure. The controls system our team designed included built and wired controls for kitchen extract and intake fans as well as heating battery controls for both the kitchen and ground floor toilet areas.
Project Challenges:
The architect/interior designers wanted to keep the authentic rustic look and feel of the original school building where possible. This meant that we had to work around existing interior design features. The Kinning Park Complex was originally built in 1910 as the science block of Lambhill Street Secondary School. Due to the age of the building, difficult access restrictions and the complex nature of rewiring such an old building while installing new plumbing and heating systems – all while ensuring that the building met the latest fire and security standards – understandably had its challenges. But as ‘A Company Well Connected’, we can provide Electrical, Mechanical, Fire & Security as well as Control System services all under the one roof. This means that through experience, skill and inhouse communication, our team were able to work through any obstacle that popped up during the site fitting.
The HF Group of companies offers clients an unsurpassed level of genuinely in-house capabilities and senior-level hands-on management from initial planning to final handover. The works included the installation of new power, lighting and dimming systems for the restaurant as well as new data wiring that would allow the new venue to have a higher level of security over wireless networks. We also installed the wiring for the new restaurants sound system.
Our Fire & Security Division were commissioned to upgrade the existing sites Fire Alarm Systems, a new Intruder Alarm System and state of the art CCTV system.
Project Challenges: Our Electrical Division had to carry out extensive electrical refurbishment works throughout the premises whilst retaining the main structure of the building, not damaging ceilings or walls which were being retained.

Client: All Bar One / Mitchells and Butlers
Project length: 19 days
Completion date: November 2021
HF divisions involved: Electrical, Mechanical, Fire & Security
Brief project description: We completed the electrical refurbishment of the Glasgow All Bar One ground and first floor public areas. Our work also required expertise from our Mechanical and Fire & Security divisions for the Plumbing Fittings and Fire & Safety Testing of the newly refurbished Restaurant and Bar in Glasgow City Centre.
The electrical work required the replacement of all existing wall and pendant light fittings in the public areas. These were replaced with new, client sourced, light fittings. We were also tasked with the installation of centre piece LED lighting used for ‘feature columns’ in the public spaces. These ‘feature columns’ form a big visual element of the interior design layout of the refurbishment of the restaurant/bar.
Additional lighting units were fitted to replace the existing track lighting units in the public spaces and we installed LED lighting strips to the back bar gantry, front bar area, masterclass bar and upstairs cabinets to help the restaurant/bar area ‘mood lighting’.
The newly fitted lighting systems were all connected through a Tiger dimming system which replaced the Bars existing individual dimmers for lighting circuits. This new system now allows the All Bar One hospitality team to set specific lighting scenes dependant on time of day.
Our electrical team also fitted new plug sockets throughout the premises, all of which came with decorative twin USB sockets.
Our Mechanical Division were tasked with all the new plumbing fittings work for the new kitchen area. We also provided all of the plumbing fittings for the public washrooms in the venue.
Our Fire & Security Division completed the Fire Risk Assessment work for the newly refurbished Bar/Restaurant and completed successful testing of the Fire Alarm System.
Project Challenges: This project was completed in Glasgow City centre while the COP26 conference was taking place. This meant that our electrical, mechanical and fire & security team had to deal with the many road closures in Glasgow as well as other unique obstacles caused during the running of COP26.
The biggest project challenge however was the very tight timescales. All Bar One officially closed for the Bar/Restaurant Refurbishment to commence on Sunday 17th October. The final handover was scheduled to be on Monday 8th November with the venue to re-open on Wednesday 10th. This meant that there was a large amount of work to be done in a very short space of time.
With multiple service contractors (including plumbers, tilers, joinery, decorating and flooring contractors) all present and all working in relatively small spaces, and with a short time scale to complete the project, it was challenging to coordinate our necessary works alongside the other trades and their schedules.
However, as a professional Restaurant/Bar fitters we have worked on many similar projects in the Hospitality & Tourism sector which has given us invaluable experience to allow us to complete this kind of work to these kind of deadlines to specification, on time and to the highest of standards.

Client: Macron SPA Bologna, Italy
Project length: 3 Weeks
Project value: £28k
Completion date: September 2021
HF divisions involved: Electrical
Brief project description: This is Macron’s new store at the AJ Bell Stadium in Manchester. HF Group and our Manchester Office were employed to deliver the full package of Electrical Services as we had previously carried out for the Macron stores in Glasgow and Murrayfield Stadium in Edinburgh.
Our services included the electrical work and data cabling. All works were carried out in-house and shop fitting & joinery works, flooring, painting & decoration and racking works were carried out as part of the shop fitting process.
The project was delivered on time and on budget including additional works requested and variations.
Project Challenges: Delivering the full package in under four weeks to reach the critical opening date with all trades working together in relatively small areas was a challenge. However, as with previous shop fitting projects, we operated with seamless site coordination on this project.
During the project, we encountered an issue with data communication between the AJ Bell Stadium and and the shop data links. This was resolved by our own Electrical Engineers and all of the systems were working perfectly in time for the opening..
Customer quotes:
“Absolutely delighted with the service received and works carried out by HF”.
Alex Buchanan.

Client: Bardyke Chemicals
Project length: 2-3 Weeks
Project value: £10k
Completion date: 31/08/2021
HF divisions involved: Fire and Security
Brief project description: The HF Fire & Security Team were tasked with installing an Analytical CCTV Security Monitoring System to provide 24 hour protection around the perimeter of our customers Chemical Manufacturing Facility. This CCTV system automatically contacts the HF monitoring station day or night if it has detected a potential intruder or visual disturbance.
Upon receiving and activation, the HF monitoring station personnel can then access the site CCTV system remotely and analyse and review the site video feeds for any issues and act accordingly. This gives our client peace of mind that their facility is being monitored for any and all potential intruders 24 hours a day.
Project Challenges: In a rural setting such as where the clients facility is based, false activations can always be a problem. However with the HikVision CCTV cameras installed, this is dramatically reduced as the system installed has 90% accuracy in detection of intruders. This increased accuracy was imperative as animals and debris in the surrounding area could have created issues with false activations
The installation of this CCTV system was conducted during live operations. As it is a chemical manufacturing site, health and safety was imperative due to manufacturing that takes place as well as the constant delivery traffic that was taking place in and out of the site buildings.
Customer quotes:
“Firstly I would like to thank you and your team for all the hard work that has gone into installing this CCTV system. The engineers were both very conscientious about keeping me informed about progress and asking about cable runs etc.”
Matt Howard

Client: OI Manufacturing Ltd
Project length: 6 months
Project value: £66k
Completion date: June 2019
HF divisions involved: Fire and Security
Brief project description: OI Manufacturing required sprinkler protection within their basement cullet systems, OI Glass is made in more than 20 countries around the globe. They create innovative, distinctive and beautiful glass packaging that builds brands and drives consumer intrigue. They produce over 1 million glass bottles per day from the Alloa site.
Project Challenges : All installation works had to take place with no disruption to production, the basement is underneath the forming machines and any glass bottles not deemed acceptable are pushed down the pipework toward the cullet system for regeneration.
This essentially means that bottles holding temperatures of over 1000c are sliding down the system creating a possible fire risk. HF created a fire safety plan for working within this area as well as erecting scaffolding and engineer protection.
In total HF installed 5 systems covering all areas of the basements deemed a fire risk.
Customer quotes: HF carried out the works in line with the relevant RAMS and performed the installation to a high standard. Clear communication was essential and again, HF performed their duties extremely well

Project length: 4 months
Project value: £30k
Completion date: April 2018

Brief project description: Design, supply & installation new electrical services installation to new conservatory.
Project Challenges: The challenge on this project was to design the electrical installation in keeping with the antique theme that exists within other parts of the building. Another challenge was ensure that no surface cabling would be visible within the conservatory structure. This was achieved by manufacturing bespoke pvc trunking disguised as framing which ensured that all cabling could be contained in a neat and tidy manner completely hidden from sight as displayed in the photograph below.

Client: Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh
Project length: 12 months
Project value: £600k
Completion date: August 2015
HF divisions involved: Electrical, Fire and Security
Services provided HF: Electrical Mains and Distribution, Lighting and Small Power, Fire Alarm System, Cat6E Data install (Brand REX), Intruder Alarms, Security Door Access
Brief project description: The purpose of the Lister project was to upgrade and refurbish existing space within the Royal College of Surgeons site at Nicolson St, Edinburgh. The site that has been occupied by the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh since the mid 1800’s and the college itself is one of the oldest surgical corporations in the world and traces its origins back to as early as 1505.
HF Electrical and HF Fire and Security with their unique skill sets and expertise of old historic buildings were a perfect fit for this type of works. HF were commissioned to strip out the services to an existing link corridor. Once enablement works were completed and the link corridor removed it allowed the substantial upgrade to commence. HF Electricals’ works included the supply, installation and commission of new MCCB panel boards in the main college switch room. New sub main distribution for the upgrade of areas in the Playfair Gallery, the Jules Thorn Gallery, the Dental Museum and the new atrium building. There was new LED lighting for displays along with supply and installation of new electrical power and data to accommodate the new museum layout.
As the site had to remain open, HF Fire and Security were set a different challenge, they had to ensure the existing Fire Alarm systems, Intruder alarms system and the security door access controls all had to remain operational. They were all adapted to suit the on-going works and on completion upgraded, extended, tested and commissioned to suit the new building use.
In May 2016 the Lister project received an award for the best permanent exhibition in the UK at the prestigious Museums + Heritage Awards for Excellence 2016. This award is regarded by most as the Oscars of the museums and heritage industry. It is an award that celebrates the achievements of pioneering projects of the past 12 months.
