Brief Project Description: We recently completed a comprehensive multi-service installation for a new outdoor activity centre in Twecher. The facility, purpose-built to support a wide range of outdoor pursuits and educational programmes, required extensive mechanical, electrical, heating and fire & security installations to deliver a modern, functional and safe environment.

HF’s full-service offering brought significant value to this project. By coordinating across multiple in-house divisions, we were able to offer the client a seamless delivery of all core services with a consistent standard of quality and project management. Something that few contractors in the market can match.

Scope of Works

Electrical Installations

Our Electrical team was responsible for a wide range of installations across the new centre, both internally and externally:

Mechanical & Plumbing Installations

Our Mechanical team completed a full installation of:

Fire & Security Systems

HF’s Fire & Security division designed and installed a complete safety and security solution for the facility:

Project Challenges: One of the primary challenges on this project was the need to coordinate around a complex site schedule, where multiple other contractors were active.Ā Building contractors managing the new building construction, landscaping crews installing pathways, green spaces and signage as well as painters and decorators handling final finishes inside the building. Not to mention the specialist contractors used for surfacing the new access road and car park.

Whether it is the fit out work for an outdoor centre, bar, restaurant, office or one of the many other sectors we work in HF’s teams needed to work flexibly and precisely to a dynamic project programme, ensuring that our work meets key client deadlines without disruption to other trades on site. By maintaining excellent communication, detailed scheduling and proactive on-site management, we successfully delivered our installations to a high standard and on time.

This project highlights the key strengths that HF brings to complex installations. Our ability to deliver multi-discipline services under one roof means reduced risk and streamlined project management for the client. Consistent quality and integrity across every division ensures that all installations, from electrical to mechanical to fire & security, meet the same high standard. And because we are an in-house team that works collaboratively, we reduce the typical issues caused by sub-contracting and ensure greater project cohesion. Clients can trust that by appointing HF, they are working with a team that places quality, safety, and operational performance at the core of everything we do.

HF is proud to have supported the development of the new outdoor centre at Twecher, providing a robust and high-quality mechanical, electrical, heating and security installation that will serve the facility and its visitors for many years to come.

This project reflects not only the technical expertise of our teams, but also our reputation for collaborative working, integrity and dependable delivery — values that set HF apart in the industry.

Gael & Grain

Client: Speyside Property Services/Star Pubs & Bars
Project: Gael & Grain
HF divisions involved:

Electrical

Brief Project Description: Our Glasgow electricians delivered the complete electrical fit-out for ‘The Gael & Grain’, an exciting new bar located on Glasgow’s iconic Sauchiehall Street/Sandyford Place.

The venue, housed in a listed building, required a full electrical upgrade to bring it up to modern standards while preserving the charm and character of the original architecture. With extensive experience in hospitality installations and a proven track record of delivering high-quality projects on tight timelines, our electricians successfully carried out a comprehensive package of works. The end result is a beautifully lit, customer-focused venue designed to operate efficiently and reliably from day one.

The electrical works carried out by our team included:

• Electrical Rewiring: We carried out electrical alterations to the building’s outdated and insufficient electrical wiring installation and replaced outdated equipment with a modern system built to current standards, ensuring a safe and future-proof infrastructure throughout the venue.
• LED Lighting Upgrades: We upgraded all lighting fittings to energy-efficient LED solutions. New decorative lighting fixtures were installed to enhance the interior ambiance, while improving long-term energy performance.
• Bar Power & Lighting: A new central bar was installed, and our electricians provided:
– Dedicated power supplies
– Lighting strips for visual appeal
– Socket outlets to support bar operations
• Customer Amenities: New power sockets featuring built-in USB charging ports were fitted throughout the seating areas to offer added convenience for customers using phones, tablets, or laptops.
• Outdoor Beer Garden Lighting: Festoon lighting was installed in the outdoor beer garden to create a welcoming, warm, and atmospheric space – perfect for evening socialising.
• Downstairs Function Room: The lower level of the venue features a new function room and secondary bar. We delivered a full electrical installation in this space, including:
– New lighting design and installation
– Power supply for equipment and bar use
– Cable management and distribution

Project Challenges:Ā As is often the case in hospitality projects, timing was critical. The client required all works to be completed within a tight deadline, and installation activities had to be carefully coordinated with the other trades on site. For example, certain electrical elements, such as the bar’s power supply, could not be installed until the bar itself had been fitted. Additionally, the listed status of the building meant we had to carry out our works with extra care and consideration, working within the existing structure while meeting strict regulations and preserving historical features.

None of this presented any serious issues for our team however and with such a strong reputation for restaurant and bar fit outs in the UK, our team completed the work on time once again.

With senior-level hands on management involved from the initial project planning all the way up to work completion, this has been another successful pub fit out project for the HF team.

Whether you are looking for a hotel refurbishment, restaurant fitting, fire alarm checks for a museum or one of the hundred plus other services that we can offer in the hospitality sector, you will always find a world class company with dedicated core values guiding everything that we do.

Shakespeare’s Pub, Edinburgh

Client: Shakespeare’s Pub / Belhaven/Greene King, Edinburgh
Completion date:Ā December 24
HF divisions involved:
Electrical

Brief Project Description: Shakespeare’s Pub, a historic Belhaven/Greene King establishment in Edinburgh, wanted to switch from gas-powered kitchen appliances in favour of sustainable electric alternatives. This significant shift from gas to electrical required a comprehensive upgrade to the pub’s electrical infrastructure. HF was engaged to deliver a solution that not only met the technical demands of the new appliances but also ensured compliance with the latest safety standards and regulations.

The project involved modernising outdated electrical systems, combining two distribution boards to optimise space and introduce advanced safety measures to protect kitchen staff. Our Edinburgh Electricians were tasked with completing these upgrades while ensuring no down time for the pub and ensuring minimal disruption.

We identified the need for new electrical supplies to power the updated appliances. This included installing a three-phase supply for a new fryer and creating additional circuits for a new oven and hob. The project required careful planning to ensure that the work could be executed efficiently without compromising the kitchen’s functionality during peak hours.

electrical installation in Edinburgh

Beyond the installation of new supplies, our electricians fitted IP-rated sockets along the cook line to enhance durability and safety in the demanding kitchen environment. Existing sockets were modified to accommodate the new appliances, ensuring seamless integration. All circuits were equipped with RCBOs, providing the highest level of protection against electrical faults and safeguarding the kitchen staff who rely on these systems daily.

Project Challenges:Ā The primary challenge was addressing the limitations of the pub’s existing electrical infrastructure. The kitchen had two distribution boards (DBs), one of which was outdated and lacked sufficient capacity to support the new high-power appliances. To resolve this, our electricians proposed consolidating the DBs into a single, modern unit that could handle the increased load and comply with the 18th edition regulations.

Our electricians meticulous approach resulted in a modernised electrical system that met the client’s goals of sustainability, efficiency and safety. The consolidation of the two DBs into one not only created additional capacity but also simplified the system for future maintenance and upgrades. By bringing all electrical components in line with the latest regulations, our electricians ensured the infrastructure was both future-proof and compliant.

The project was completed to the highest standards, and Shakespeare’s Pub is now fully equipped to operate with a new system that not only supports the current appliances but is also adaptable for any future enhancements, providing long-term value for the client.

As a leading commercial electrician, this project perfectly highlights our ability to deliver tailored solutions for complex challenges while prioritising client needs. Whether modernising a commercial kitchen or delivering sustainable solutions, HF consistently exceeds client expectations. Bar + Block, Edinburgh

Client: Lloyd Catering / Bar + Block, Princes Street, Edinburgh
Completion date: December 24
HF divisions involved:
Electrical

Brief Project Description: When Lloyd Catering required essential electrical upgrades at Bar + Block, a bustling restaurant in the heart of Edinburgh, they turned to HF and our Edinburgh Electricians for a solution. Known for our expertise in delivering high-quality electrical services, the primary objective in this job was to install two new radial circuits for heat lamps and a fryer, vital to the restaurant’s day-to-day operations. The project required adherence to strict timelines, compliance with safety regulations and a commitment to minimising disruption during service hours.

We pride ourselves on delivering tailored solutions that meet the specific needs of our clients. For this project, our approach was methodical and client-focused. Our team began with an on-site survey to assess the existing electrical infrastructure. This allowed us to design a solution that seamlessly integrated with the restaurant’s operations. Our engineers installed the circuits ensuring compliance with all relevant safety standards and guidelines. By maintaining open communication with client, we ensured that the work was executed efficiently, with minimal impact on the restaurant’s operations.

Before completing the project, rigorous testing was conducted to confirm the functionality and reliability of the new installations. This step reflects our unwavering commitment to quality in every project we undertake.

Project Challenges: The primary challenge on this project was time. While the client was looking to upgrade their venue to accommodate the new radial heaters and fryer, they wanted minimal downtime to ensure that they didn’t loose out on any trade during one of their busiest months of the year.Ā  To ensure that this didn’t cause them any issues, we worked around their opening hours to ensure the absolute minimum of downtime.

The Slug & Lettuce

Client: The Slug & Lettuce
Completion date: November 24
HF divisions involved:
Electrical

Brief Project Description: The Slug and Lettuce recently took over a venue formally known as Missoula in central Glasgow and required upgrades to the existing electrical infrastructure to meet the demands of a modern, energy-efficient establishment. HF was tasked with enhancing the venue’s electrical systems, ensuring seamless integration with the venuesĀ  existing electrical set up which was to be retained.

Our team carried out the following key services:

Our experienced electricians began by assessing the site to create a tailored plan that incorporated the retained wiring. Working in tandem with other contractors, our team adjusted schedules and workflows to maintain steady progress ensuring all tasks were completed within the agreed three-week deadline.

Electrical install for Slug & Lettuce in Glasgow

The installation of new power sockets, each equipped with USB ports, added modern functionality for the venue while our electricians also upgraded the lighting system to LED fixtures that not only improved energy efficiency but also created a welcoming atmosphere for the new venue. Because of the new power requirements of the venue, we had to install a new distribution board which, once installed, was thoroughly tested to ensure reliable power delivery for the enhanced electrical system.

Project Challenges: The venue had legacy electrical systems that needed to be retained so our team carefully integrated new installations with the existing infrastructure to ensure functionality and compliance with safety standards. We also had to integrate all of the new and existing systems into the distribution board which we installed.Ā  This required meticulous planning and execution.

Multiple contractors were working simultaneously in this busy city-centre site during the fit out, requiring our electricians to coordinate closely with all parties to ensure smooth progress without delays.

The project was completed on time, transforming the venue’s electrical infrastructure to meet modern demands while retaining functional legacy components. The improvements provide the Slug and Lettuce with increased power accessibility, reliability andĀ  capacity coupled with significant energy savings thanks to the improved lighting quality of new LED lighting upgrades.

HF’s successful delivery of this project demonstrates our expertise in electrical solutions for hospitality venues. Whether integrating existing systems, coordinating with other trades or implementing state-of-the-art upgrades, our commitment to quality, safety and efficiency ensures outstanding outcomes for our clients in sectors including hospitality, leisure, commercial and so many more.

Royal Observatory

Client:Ā Royal Observatory
Completion date: December 2024
HF divisions involved:Ā Electrical

Brief project description: HF was entrusted with the vital task of conducting comprehensive fixed wiring testing and inspection for the Royal Observatory in Edinburgh, ensuring the facility’s electrical systems meet the highest standards of safety and reliability. The Royal Observatory Edinburgh is a UK government facility renowned for its cutting-edge research and development in satellite and ground observation technologies.

Since April, our electricians have been frequently to methodically carry out inspecting and testing electrical systems across the observatory’s diverse infrastructure. All electrical and testing work completed was carried out to SFG20 industry standards.

Our work has spanned the historically significant 1863 buildings and the state-of-the-art Peter Higgs Centre for Innovation, reflecting the site’s unique blend of heritage and cutting-edge technology.

The electrical testing work conducted by our electricians included a thorough examination of electrical installations to identify potential hazards. We tested for system performance and compliance with UK regulations and produced a 250-page Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR). This comprehensive document ensures transparency and actionable insights into the condition of the observatory’s electrical systems.

Electrical Testing in Edinburgh

Project Challenges: The Royal Observatory’s combination of historic structures and modern facilities presented unique challenges for our electricians. The older buildings required careful handling to preserve their integrity while ensuring their systems were brought up to current electrical standards. And the modern facilities, housing cutting-edge research equipment, demanded careful advanced planning to avoid disruption to ongoing research activities.

Our team adapted to these challenges by developing a phased approach to work during weekends to minimise disruptions to daily operations. With the culmination of this project, our efforts have not only ensured the electrical safety and compliance of the facility but also supported its critical research mission.

Electrical Testing and Inspection is designed to eliminate the risk of electrical hazards and minimise potential downtime while helping to spot any developing issues before they become big problems.

The main purpose of electrical testing is to ensure that all the electrical appliances, wiring and installations in a business are functioning to their full capacity and will continue to run trouble free. Electrical testing can help prevent office downtime, production problems and actually cut costs for a business should there be problems; all while helping to save lives.

Electrical testing is carried out both for commercial and residential properties but it is in the business sector where it is most important and more frequently called upon. Injuries caused by electrical failures are dangerous, can cause injuries to members of staff or customers and the business owner is the one liable. Regular testing and PAT testing are required by law as some of the most important requirements of the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 and are applied to business owners, landlords and their tenants.

To find out more about our electrical periodic inspection and testing and for a full range of electrical tests available to your commercial business or domestic home, please contact us on 0800 783 9480.

• Air Conditioning Repositioning: The existing air conditioning units were repositioned to better serve the new layout of the venue, ensuring optimal cooling during warm months.

Fire & Security Scope of Work

Our Fire & Security team played a vital role in the project by making fire alarm alterations to comply with building control requirements. These modifications ensured the venue met all necessary safety standards while integrating seamlessly with the updated design.

Project Challenges: One of the primary challenges of this project was working within the constraints of a heritage building. Old School House

Client: Old School House, Aberdeen / Belhaven
Completion date: November 2024
HF divisions involved:Ā Electrical,Ā Green Energy

Brief project description:Ā  Our Aberdeen electricians recently completed an impressive LED lighting installation project at the Old School House in the city centre. The project involved the careful placement of LED tape to enhance the faƧade of the historic building, providing an upgraded, energy-efficient lighting solution that helps elevating the venue’s ambiance and visual appeal.

The management of the Old School House reached out to HF to explore the possibility of adding LED tape along the front of the building to improve its night time aesthetics and visibility. After initial consultations with the on-site manager to discuss design preferences and placement strategies, we proposed installing three distinct sections of LED tape across the building’s various faƧades for optimal effect.

For this project, we selected Robus Atlantic LED tape, known for its robust performance and reliability. We have extensive experience with various types of LED tape and have found Robus Atlantic to be the most dependable, this ensured that the client would benefit from both high-quality illumination and a reduced need for future maintenance.

The installation process required a team of three electricians working over a span of three days. Utilising a boom lifter for safe and efficient access to elevated areas, we ensured that each section of LED tape was precisely installed according to the agreed design plan. The careful approach to the installation of this LED Lighting Tape not only met the client’s aesthetic expectations but also showcased our commitment to safe and effective project execution.

Project Challenges: The main challenge in this project was ensuring uniform lighting and seamless integration with the building’s historical architecture. We addressed this by segmenting the tape installation into three distinct sections, enabling comprehensive coverage and enhanced visual impact. Regular communication with the site manager ensured that adjustments were made in real-time to align with client expectations.

The completed project highlighted the Old School House with a modern touch, improving its night time visibility and overall appeal. The installation was flawless with no issues reported—a testament to the quality of materials and expert craftsmanship provided by our Aberdeen Electricians. The client expressed satisfaction with both the outcome and the professionalism demonstrated throughout the project.

Grosvenor Casino, Aberdeen

Client: Grosvenor Casino
Completion date: June 24
HF divisions involved:
Electrical

Brief Project Description: The Grosvenor Casino in Aberdeen is a popular gaming venue in the Granite City. As the venue looked to upgrade their premises, they turned to HF to tackle the issues that had been having with the lighting in its gaming area. The area was poorly illuminated due to multiple faulty fittings, which detracted from the overall gaming experience and created a less inviting atmosphere for patrons. To address these issues, a decision was made to undertake a comprehensive lighting upgrade.

The primary objective was to enhance the lighting in the gaming area by replacing the existing 60 faulty fittings with bespoke LED fittings. These new fittings were custom-made to suit the specific requirements of the casino’s ceiling, ensuring both aesthetic and functional improvements.

led lighting upgrade for casino in aberdeen

The project was meticulously planned to minimise disruption to the casino’s operations. The gaming area was only accessible by our electricians to work in after closing to the public, which was at 5:30 AM. This timing allowed our Aberdeen electricians to work through the early morning hours to ensure the area was ready for use by opening hours that afternoon.

The installation process was scheduled over four consecutive days. Our team of skilled electricians complete the following steps:

  1. Removal of Faulty Fittings: The old, faulty lighting fixtures were carefully removed to prevent any damage to the ceiling or surrounding structures.
  2. Installation of Bespoke LED Fittings: The new custom-made LED fittings were installed. These fittings were specifically designed to enhance the lighting quality and were tailored to the unique design of the ceiling in the gaming area.
  3. Testing and Adjustments: After installation, each fitting was tested to ensure optimal performance. Necessary adjustments were made to achieve the desired lighting effects and to ensure uniform illumination throughout the gaming area.

Project Challenges: The restricted working hours posed a challenge, as our electricians had to complete the work within a tight window each day. This was addressed through careful planning and efficient work processes, ensuring that all tasks were completed on schedule.

The bespoke nature of the LED fittings required precise installation to meet the aesthetic and functional requirements. Our expertise and prior experience in similar projects in the hospitality industry ensured that the fittings were installed correctly and met the high standards set by the casino.

By turning to LED Lighting, the Casino has improved the lighting quality in their gaming area, creating a brighter and more inviting environment for patrons. The LED fittings are more energy-efficient compared to the old fixtures, resulting in reduced energy consumption and lower operational costs for the casino while the bespoke design of the fittings complements the casino’s interior design, enhancing the overall visual appeal of the gaming area.

The successful installation of bespoke LED lighting at the Grosvenor Casino in Aberdeen highlights the importance of tailored solutions and meticulous planning in achieving project goals. The enhanced lighting has not only improved the functional aspects of the gaming area but also contributed to the overall ambiance and customer experience, demonstrating the value of investing in high-quality, custom-designed fixtures. Eastwood Golf Club

Client: Eastwood Golf Club
Completion date: June 24
HF divisions involved:
Electrical

Brief Project Description:Ā After a fault in the Pump House supply cable at Eastwood Golf Club was reported in the Spring time, it was up to our NICEIC Approved Electricians to find the source of the problem.

A thorough investigation was conducted by our electrician and groundworks operatives to identify and rectify the issue. The investigation employed a Cable Avoidance Tool (CAT) and Signal Generator to trace the fault along the cable route. The fault was located by scanning repeatedly from both ends of the cable.

A Cable Avoidance Tool (CAT) is a specialised device used for detecting and locating underground utilities, such as electrical cables, pipes, and telecommunications lines. Its primary purpose is to prevent accidental damage to these utilities during excavation or construction activities.

Having used the CAT to trace the fault,Ā  we found that the cable was fully severed below ground level.

Excavation was performed by a groundworks sub-contractor to access the damaged area before the two cable joints and a new section of cable were installed to restore the connection.

After installation, the power supply to the Pump House was retested and reinstated.

Due to the compromised insulation resistance, we recommended for the replacement of the entire Pump House supply cable to prevent any future faults and ensure long-term reliability.

Thanks to the work of our Electricians and the results of using CAT to locate the issue, we minimised any excavation required and have helped the Golf Club to address the issue.

Client: Premier Inn
Completion date: May 2024
HF divisions involved:Ā Electrical,Ā Fire & Security

With 800 hotels nationwide, Premier Inn is a well known hotel brand in the UK catering primarily to business travellers and tourists. Ensuring guest safety is paramount, and their hotel on Rose Street in Edinburgh turned to HF to upgrade the emergency lighting system to comply with current safety regulations and enhance overall guest safety.

Our electricians completed an initial survey of the hotel premises to identify all areas requiring emergency lighting before completing the required electrical work, replacing old fittings with energy-efficient LED emergency lights. We also tested each unit to ensure functionality and compliance.

The new emergency lighting improves the emergency evacuation capability of the hotel while the new lighting fixtures benefits from energy-efficient LED lamps to reduce operational costs.

Why Emergency Lighting is so Important

In the event of power failure, emergency lights are designed to assist the safe evacuation of a property / building. Careful consideration is required when it comes to the design of emergency lighting system as their sole purpose is to illuminate doors and escape routes. Around a third of fire related deaths in the UK are because of gas, smoke and toxic fumes.Ā  So getting away from them as quickly as possible is so vital.

Properly installed emergency lighting is therefore incredibly important which is why, as always, our electricians put a great focus on the correct, compliant installation of the new LED lighting for the hotel.

Project Challenges: As a functioning hotel, the upgrade needed to be carried out with minimal disruption to guests whilst also being completed within a limited time frame to avoid extended periods of potential non-compliance. Pavilion Theatre, Glasgow

Client: Pavilion Theatre
Completion date:Ā May 24
HF divisions involved:
Electrical

Brief Project Description: The Pavilion Theatre is a historic and iconic venue in Glasgow. And in an effort to modernise its back of house area, the famous Glasgow venue turned to HF to upgrade the existing fluorescent lighting to more energy-efficient LED lighting. The goal was to enhance the working environment for staff, improve energy efficiency, and reduce maintenance costs.

The project began with a thorough assessment of the existing lighting system. Our electricians collaborated with the Pavilion Theatre’s management to understand their specific needs and preferences. A detailed lighting design was developed to ensure the new LED system would provide superior illumination and energy efficiency. Our electricians then set to work removing the existing fluorescent lighting fixtures with minimal disruption to the theatre’s operations. The old fluorescent lamps were safely recycled.

The new light fittings were carefully installed, and high-efficiency LED lamps were fitted. The installation process was completed efficiently, adhering to all safety standards and regulations. After installation, the new LED lighting system was rigorously tested to ensure all fixtures were operating correctly and providing the desired lighting levels. Adjustments were made as needed to optimise performance.

The back of house area now benefits from brighter, more consistent lighting, enhancing the working conditions for theatre staff. The switch to LED lighting has significantly reduced energy consumption, aligning with the Pavilion Theatre’s sustainability objectives. LED lamps have a longer lifespan and require less frequent replacement, lowering maintenance costs and efforts and the upgrade has contributed to a reduction in the Pavilion Theatre’s carbon footprint, supporting broader environmental goals.

Project Challenges: Because of the busy schedule of events being held at the Pavilion Theatre, particularly at the back of house area that is vital for daily functions, our electrical upgrade work had to be completed at scheduled times to minimise any disruption. LED Lighting Upgrades

There are many advantages for commercial, retail and industrial business sectors when upgrading to LED lighting from inefficient halogen and compact fluorescent lamps (CFL). LED Lights are an affordable and simple way of reducing energy bills for a business.Ā  They are up to 90% more energy efficient than conventional lighting systems. LED lights can last up to 16 times as long as a halogen equivalent and unlike other lighting solutions, LEDs do not simply stop working when they reach the end of their life.Ā  Instead, after around 50,000 hours, they will gradually become dimmer before needing to be replaced. This compared to a halogen bulb which only has an average 3,000 hours life expectancy while Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFLs) have around 10,000 hours of light per lamp. This means that on top of annual energy savings, your business can save money on maintenance and replacement light bulbs as well.

Upgrading your businesses electrical lighting can save you money on your yearly energy bills and it can lower your yearly maintenance costs. Commercial LED lighting can be installed to meet your specific lighting needs and come in a variety of designs, shapes, sizes, styles, brightness and spectrum of warm and cool colours.

At HF, we are the first choice for some of the country’s leading businesses when it comes to electrical services. RetailĀ andĀ leisureĀ organisations,Ā property services clientsĀ andĀ global brands all benefit from the reassurance that HF are only a phone call away,Ā 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Orthodontist in Glasgow

Client: Glasgow Orthodontist
Completion date:Ā May 24
HF divisions involved:
Electrical

Brief Project Description: Our electricians have recently undertook an electrical project at an orthodontist surgery located in Glasgow. The client, concerned about the safety and efficiency of their electrical system, sought HF and our electricians expertise to conduct an Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR) on their premises.

The orthodontist surgery had been operating with three outdated, non-RCD protected consumer units. This configuration not only posed safety risks but also lacked the efficiency and protection required for modern electrical systems. The client needed a comprehensive solution to address these issues and bring their electrical infrastructure up to standard.

Our electricians conducted a thorough EICR, identifying several critical issues with the existing setup. Subsequently, we recommended a series of remedial works to enhance safety and efficiency. One of the key recommendations was the consolidation of the three old consumer units into a single modern, metal-cased, surge-protected unit. This new consumer unit features individual RCD protection for each circuit, significantly reducing the risk of electrical faults and improving safety measures.

Additionally, our Glasgow electricians installed a separate REC main isolator switch adjacent to the meter, further enhancing the control and safety of the electrical system. This strategic placement allowed for easy access and swift isolation of power in case of emergencies or maintenance requirements.

By implementing these recommended remedial works, we have successfully addressed the issues highlighted in the EICR. The modernisation of the electrical system not only enhanced safety standards but also improved the overall efficiency and reliability of the orthodontist surgery’s operations. The client now benefits from a robust electrical infrastructure that meets modern regulatory standards and ensures a safe environment for both staff and patients.

Through the consolidation of consumer units, installation of surge protection, and addition of an isolator switch, we have not only mitigated existing risks but also future-proofed the client’s electrical infrastructure against potential hazards. This project serves as a testament to our ongoing commitment to delivering high-quality solutions tailored to meet the unique needs of their clients.

HMRC / Bellrock Group

Client:Ā HMRC / Bellrock Group
Completion date:Ā April 24
HF divisions involved:
Electrical

Brief Project Description: We were entrusted with a significant project by HMRC on behalf of the Bellrock Group. The project aimed to conduct planned maintenance of all existing switchgear and busbar systems at HMRC facilities. However, what set this project apart was the emphasis on utilising infrared imaging technology to detect potential deterioration in electrical systems, thereby enhancing safety and efficiency.

HMRC, the UK’s tax authority, operates numerous facilities nationwide, handling critical financial data and government operations. Bellrock oversees maintenance and operational aspects for various clients, including HMRC. They turned to HF and our electrical testing and inspection team to complete this vital work for them.

The scope of the project involved conducting planned maintenance for all existing switchgear and busbar systems across multiple HMRC facilities. Traditional maintenance methods may not adequately detect early signs of deterioration in electrical systems, posing potential safety risks and operational disruptions. This is why we turned to the use of advancedĀ  infrared imaging to ensure the integrity of electrical systems.

We proposed a comprehensive solution that integrated traditional planned maintenance with advanced infrared imaging technology to systematically assess switchgear and busbar systems at HMRC facilities.

The cutting-edge thermal imaging technology was deployed to conduct non-invasive inspections of electrical components. This technology allowed for the detection of abnormal heat patterns, indicating potential faults or deterioration not visible to the naked eye.

Data captured through infrared imaging was meticulously analysed by our electricians and comprehensive reports were generated for each facility. These reports highlighted areas of concern, potential risks, and recommended actions for remediation.

We collaborated closely with Bellrock throughout the process, providing insights into the significance of detected issues and recommending preventive measures to mitigate risks.

Infrared imaging technology enabled the early detection of potential faults and deterioration in electrical systems, allowing for proactive intervention before issues escalated. By identifying and addressing potential safety hazards, our electrical services team have contributed to enhancing the overall safety and reliability of electrical systems at HMRC facilities. This proactive maintenance approach minimised downtime and operational disruptions for the client, ensuring seamless operations for HMRC.

The roots of electrical testing can be traced back to the late 19th century when the pioneers of electricity, such as Thomas Edison and Nikola Tesla, were laying the foundation for modern electrical systems. Basic testing tools like voltmeters and ammeters were employed to measure voltage and current. However, as electrical systems became more complex, the need for advanced testing equipment became evident.

Nowadays, our electricians can us advanced test meters, power quality analysers, digital oscilloscopes and thermal imaging cameras to conduct electrical testing and inspection and eliminate the risk of electrical hazards and minimise potential downtime while helping to spot any developing issues before they become big problems.

The successful completion of the planned maintenance project at HMRC facilities underscores our commitment to innovation and excellence in electrical services. By leveraging advanced technologies like infrared imaging, we not only met but exceeded client expectations, delivering enhanced safety, efficiency, and peace of mind to HMRC and Bellrock.

Ingram Brothers

Client: Ingram Brothers
Project length: 3 months
Completion date: January 24
HF divisions involved:
Electrical

Brief project description: Our electricians at HF were tasked to complete a full LED lighting upgrade of the factory, warehouse and office lighting for the Ingram Brothers headquarters in Paisley, Scotland.

This project covered both the design, build and installation of new LED lighting across the entire site. Our electricians had to make sure that the new LED lighting that we were installing met the required lux levels for the different areas of operation.Ā  Ā Lux is a measure of the amount of light level intensity, which is commonly referred to as unit of illuminance or illumination on a surface area. Lux is an SI unit that measures ā€˜luminous flux’ per unit area.

We liaised with lighting designers during the initial design phase of the project to create a fully compliant design which we then presented to the client for their comments. Ensuring that our clients are involved in all aspects of the design phases ensures consistency and quality in our work.Ā  With senior-level hands-on management from initial planning to final handover coupled with the opportunity to tap into a wide range of varied services and associated consultants means that we can offer our customers unsurpassed levels of genuinely in-house capabilities.

Following on from the initial design phase we introduced the idea of fitting new lighting control units to the sites corridors, offices and meeting rooms. We presented this option as a green energy solution that would allow Ingram Brothers to cut their energy costs by reducing lighting in areas that weren’t in use.Ā  These lighting control units save energy by switching off lighting in areas that are not in use which, along with the benefits of LED lighting will help them further reduce their electricity costs per annum.Ā  As with so many companies looking to both reduce energy costs and improve their green credentials, this solution was welcomed by the client and was incorporated into the LED lighting upgrade work.

Once the design stage was signed off, our electricians were able to schedule the installation work around the clients busy day to day operations, completing the LED Lighting Installation work on time and to the same high standards that HF have built our name on as the first choice for some of the country’s leading businesses when it comes to electrical services.

Project Challenges: There were two core challenges to overcome working on this project.Ā  The first being that the factory, warehouse and offices had to remain fully operational throughout the work.Ā  This meant that our electricians had to work around production schedules and other day to day operations within the company. With decades of experience working in ‘live’ environments, this was not a problem for us and we were able to successfully schedule all work safely around the companies working requirements.

The second challenge was more explosive in nature. The Ingram Brothers specialise in manufacturing high quality icing products for clients in the food industry.Ā  This means that they have, on site their own sugar mill which is defined as ATEX Zone 21.Ā  A Zone 21 area is classified as a location in which an explosive atmosphere consisting of a mixture with air or flammable substances (in the form of powder or dust) is likely to occur in normal operation occasionally.

As part of our initial design phase, all lighting in this area had to be intrinsically safe to comply with the Zone 21 requirements. This also meant that the installation of LED lighting in this part of the factory had to be completed by our CompEx trained engineers.

From large scale electrical installation work to manned 24 hour call out service and annual inspection and testing, Our Electrical services have become the first choice for some of the country’s leading Food & Drink brands. Hence, these two challenges were easily overcome by our brilliant design and installation team. The entire project was successfully completed safely and to the high standards that are expected of the HF brand.

Brief project description: 21-23 Slater’s Steps is a fully refurbished, open plan office space in Edinburgh, boasting double height ceilings that provide excellent natural light.Ā  As part of the sites refurbishment, HF were called in to compete the electrical work including the install of a new power supply, containment and LED lighting.

As a leading electrical contractor, our experience of working in office refurbishments meant that the installation of new electrical wiring and power supply went without a hitch.

air to air heat pump as part of office refurbishment

As part of the initial project requirements, we were asked to upgrade the offices existing electric panel heaters. However, after our team had completed a site survey, we advised the client that they would be better off taking advantage of a new air to air heat pump system.Ā  This would provide a far more comfortable office environment all year round and benefit the office space greatly over the heating system that they had originally wanted to refurbish. Air to air heat pumps are advanced, efficient heating and cooling systems that provide effortless temperature control for maximum comfort.Ā  They are also very energy efficient which will help the office to reduce their energy consumption whilst also helping to improve the air quality within the open plan office.

The new containment was utilised to install 4 x new Daikin ceiling mounted AC indoor units that our Mechanical team fitted to provide the site with energy efficient heating and cooling all year round.

Further green energy solutions were implemented including LED lighting upgrade work. The new LED lighting means that the refurbished office now benefits from superior lighting that is also more energy efficient, helping to further cut down on the sites yearly energy consumption.

Project Challenges: As with any project of this scope, the biggest challenge was working around other contractors.

Scotwood Interiors were responsible for the fit-out fabric works and our electricians and mechanical engineers successfully worked alongside them to ensure that all the electrical and mechanical work was completed to set schedules that would allow the office decorating to proceed without any delays.

Our clients satisfaction is always a sign that we have done a good job and with this project, the client was so pleased with the quality of our work that our fire & security engineers have already been contracted to replace the offices existing alarm system with a new and improved one.

Brief project description:Ā The family owned Glynhill Hotel & Spa located close to Glasgow Airport and just a few miles from Glasgow city centre is a popular choice for hospitality events ranging from weddings to corporate events, parties and so much more.

To ensure that the venue continues to offer consistently high standards for their guests, the hotel turned to HF to assist them with the upgrading of their four function rooms. They required new LED lighting and control systems to be fitted that gives them greater flexibility for future events whilst also reducing their energy bills.

Our electricians had to remove all of the existing light fittings and electrical wiring along with the existing dimmer control units and transformers.

The new LED lighting was installed along with new electrical wiring for each light fitting. All of the newly installed LED lamps were connected to a Casambi Dimmer Control Systems.

Casambi Dimmer Controls are a serious piece of kit. A sleek looking control system that will allows the hotel to control the lighting in the four different rooms with dimming options and multiple pre-set lighting options.

Project Challenges: The main challenge with this project was ensuring that we did not damage any of the ceilings while completing the electrical wiring replacement. With so much old electrical wiring to be removed and new wiring installed, this was a delicate job but our electricians were able to successfully complete the removal and installation of new wiring without incident.Ā  On top of this challenge, our electricians had to work to a set schedule to ensure that the hotel had the rooms available again for their busy pre-Christmas season. With a vast amount of experience dealing in tight deadlines for electrical installations, we were able to successfully complete the installation of all the required electrical wiring, control systems and led lighting within the agreed upon timeline.

Now fitted with LED lighting throughout the four rooms, the Glynhill Hotel will be able to benefit from an easier to use dimmer control system, modern electrical wiring and energy efficient LED lighting which will help to reduce their monthly energy costs.

Teagasc

Client: Teagasc Agriculture and Food Development Authority
Completion date: December 2023
HF divisions involved:Ā Electrical

Brief project description: Teagasc is the national body providing integrated research, advisory and training services to the agriculture and food industry in rural communities across Ireland and Northern Ireland.

The College required the installation of new LED lighting for the College and agricultural sheds but needed it completed to a tight deadline.Ā  Working to a strict 8 week turn around WHILE the college was fully operational (with both college students and livestock), our electricians managed to install an impressive two thousand, seven hundred new LED lights across the campus.Ā  The LED lighting upgrade work replaced the colleges previous light fittings which were both inefficient and costly to replace.

The LED upgrade works required our electricians to be working at height via MEWP’S and Scaffolding. While the timescale was tight given the scale of the job, we completed all the electrical work on time and on budget.

The Benefits of LED Lighting

There are many advantages for commercial and industrial businesses when upgrading to LED lighting from inefficient halogen and compact fluorescent lamps (CFL) including:

Energy Efficiency

Energy efficiency in lighting are looked at in two ways.Ā  Luminous efficacy and useful lumens.Ā  A business upgrading to LED lighting can result in 65% or more improvement in energy efficiency.Ā  If you are currently using outdated and energy inefficient lighting, this energy saving can be greater.

Long Life

A traditional light bulbs filament will weaken over time which causes the bulb to burn out – LEDs don’t burn out.Ā  An LED’s bulb produces low heat levels, is durable and energy efficient, outlasting other light bulb types by thousands of hours.

Increased Brightness and Intensity

Because LED lighting is capable of emitting such a high level of brightness, it can offer increase lighting power over halogen. This means that not only does it require less power to turn on an LED light, you actually need less LED lights to achieve the same room lighting. Which can save you even more in running costs.

Reduced heat output

LED lights are able to operate at a significantly lower temperature and what little heat they do give off is actually dissipated in a special heat sink.

Reliability

LED lighting is a far more reliable lighting option. They can operate in colder temperatures and are more durable to impact and vibrations because they have no filament or fragile parts.

Increased colour rendering

LED lighting has a strong Colour Rendering Index (CRI) (a measurement of lights ability to reveal the colours of objects) compared to natural light from the sun.Ā  LED lighting with a high CRI makes them an ideal solution for night time security lighting where they can illuminate more objects in a surrounding area thanks to a higher CRI.

Design Flexibility

LED lighting can be bunched into a unit to replace larger bulbs or be arranged in isolation on smaller devices.Ā  They can be strung out in a sequence and come in a wide range of colours.Ā  LEDs are available in a wide range of Correlated Colour Temperature (CCT) values ranging from Cool to warm, yellow, white light and so much more.

Instant results

While CFLs take a few moments to warm up and an incandescent bulb works by heating a filament to a temperature that produces light, LEDs are instantaneous and operate at full brightness the moment you flip the switch.

Brief project description: As part of the upgrades to a working farm in Tranent, East Lothian, the client turned to HF to assist them with the new electrical installation work they required.

They were looking for new sub-main supplies to five of their existing out buildings along with additional areas of the farm and needing an electrical contractor with experience of these kind of electrical installations in an agricultural setting.

Before we could begin the electrical installation, we first had to liaise with Scottish Power to move and upgrade the farms existing main electrical incoming supply.

The existing supply was simply too small and out dated to handle the new installation that the client was requiring. Scottish Power were able to complete this work with no issues and once completed, we were able to get to work.

Our electricians supplied and installed a new EIGHT WAY Electrical Panel Board in building #1, complete with main isolator and S.P.D protection with MCB’s for all outgoing circuits (the five out buildings) and KWH meter for proposed gym supply circuit.

Building #5 – In the farms cattle shed and straw shed we fitted a 6 way three phase distribution board.
Building #6 – This building is being renovated to become a proposed gym and in advance of any fitout works, we installed an 8 way three phase distribution board.

In the farm buildings #1, #3, #4 and #6 our electricians also fitted new LED flood lighting and double socket fittings at the new sub-main distribution board to help make any future work easier.
In building #5, we incorporated the existing electrical circuits (after inspection) into the new sub-main board.

Project Challenges: The main challenge with this project was completing the electrical installation work around an active farm with both livestock and heavy machinery.

This is where experience counts and specifically our experience of working in fully operational environments such as active farms.

The Millwood

Client: Admiral Taverns
Project length: 3 weeks
Completion date: August 23
HF divisions involved:
Electrical
Mechanical
Plumbing, Heating & AC

Brief project description: In July, a popular local Glasgow bar closed for refurbishment and a rebrand. Once the doors had closed on what was known as Finlay’s Bar our electricians, plumbers and gas engineers could get to work on the fit out work.

With a tight deadline to complete the work before the renamed bar opened again in August, our team had to complete all required mechanical and electrical work to a strict schedule. All while working around other contractors so that painters and decorators could complete the refit in time for the scheduled reopening date.

Our electricians were responsible for the complete electrical wiring of the venue. This involved both the fitting of completely new electrical wiring as well as the replacement of old electrical fittings in the venue.

A big part of the new bar redesign is the entertainment systems which required a complete rewiring; while behind the bar, we also fitted new electrical supply points and rewired older electrical fittings to meet the clients requirements.

On the Mechanical side, we removed the old, inefficient water meter and replaced it with a new one and fitted a new Worcester Bosch boiler that was linked to a Google Nest thermostat system. The new heating system was made complete with the installation of new radiators throughout the venue.

The ladies bathroom was completely refurbished by our team with new fittings and plumbing work and we also installed a new fan convector above the main entrance door.Ā  An ideal feature to welcome guests into the new pub when the Scottish Winter rolls in.

Project Challenges: Time was the biggest challenge on this project.Ā  The pub had announced on social media both their closure and opening days and this had been picked up by numerous news outlets. This meant that deadlines had to be met and there was no room for error.

At HF, we have become one of the leading electrical and mechanical installers for the hospitality industry and have proven time and time again that we can deliver when it comes to tight deadlines.Ā  So while the project timeline was tight, it posed no serious concerns for our engineers who, as always, delivered quality work for the client.

All the work was completed on time and the venue, known rebranded as ‘The Millwood’ was able to successfully open as intended in August.

University Hospital Hairmyres

Client: ISS
Completion date: July 2023
HF divisions involved:
Electrical
Mechanical
Plumbing, Heating & AC

Brief project description: Our Mechanical & Electrical team completed the complete rip out and refit of the University Hospital Hairmyres in East Kilbride.Ā  As ‘A Company Well Connected’ and with our range of in-house capabilities and service as a Mechanical & Electrical Contractor, we successfully completed the wide range of required strip out and re-fit works required.

We removed the existing (domestic) Girpi Pipe Water System and replaced it with new stainless steel piping throughout the ward while all existing sanitary ware in the ward was also stripped out so that they could be properly cleaned before being re-installed on completion of the works.

We fitted new shower valves and taps which had ‘end of line’ sensors fitted to them so that the hospital staff can monitor the DHWR temperatures. This is to ensure that the water temperature remains above 55 degrees Celsius in order to combat the threat of legionella.Ā  The sites water services were also sterilised on completion of the work; and to ensure that this was done thoroughly, samples of the water supply were tested to ensure that no bacteria was present in the system prior to us handing over the site upon completion.

For the hospital wards heating system, we installed new heating controls throughout the facility while the existing supply and extract ventilation was inspected and cleaned with new grilles installed.Ā  Once this work had been completed, the ventilation system was balanced.

Across the ward, we installed new medical gas points to every bed location while also fitting new alarm panels and the existing lighting system was upgraded to energy efficient LED lighting. We also fitted a new nurse call system throughout the bedrooms and bathrooms of the ward.

This new Nurse call system was designed especially for the ward by Wandsworth Healthcare. The new call system also now allows individual overbed lights to operate from a hand-held device.

Our electricians also changed over the main distribution board serving the ward (with a Type II surge protection device installed) and also installed RCBO’s to all outgoing circuits.

Project Challenges: The main challenge with this project was working around the schedules of all other contractors on site and ensuring that we met the completion date deadline given to us by the client.Ā  As with so much of what we do, being able to provide such a wide range of services all under the one roof allows us to work efficiently around these timescales and as such, meet the demands placed on us by the client.

Star Pubs & Bars

Client: Star Pubs & Bars
Project length: 1 Week
Completion date: May 2023
HF divisions involved:Ā Electrical,Ā Mechanical

Brief project description: Our Electrical and Mechanical team were refurbishing the kitchen for one of Star Pubs & Bars locations in Scotland.Ā  The actual work involved the fitting of a new canopy, gas interlocking system and the usual plumbing, gas and electrical work that is required for a commercial kitchen to operate.Ā  However when we turned up to complete the work, we noted that the Pubs LPG Tank was located in the middle of a car park and did not have adequate protection around it.Ā  After consulting the client on the health & safety risks, we fitted a new Arco Barrier system to protect the LPG tank and make the area safer for customers and employees at the venue.

lpg tank protection barrier

Project Challenges: The actual commercial kitchen fitting proceeded smoothly and we were able to complete the work within the quoted timeline to ensure minimal disruption to the venues day to day business operations.

For the car park barrier system, the main challenge was the location itself and safety.Ā  We were having to complete the work in an active car park location.Ā  At HF, Safety is one of our core values.Ā  Individually and collectively, we are all responsible. We ensured that correct safety precautions were followed throughout and we have left the site safer that it was when we first arrived.

Trades House

Client:Ā Trades House, Glasgow
HF divisions involved:Ā Electrical

Brief project description: The stunningly beautiful Trades House in Glasgow’s Merchant City was first completed in 1794 and now operates as a registered charity helping support the people of Glasgow. They raise funds by holding events such as weddings, meetings, conferences and other larger celebrations throughout the multiple halls that are part of the buildings internal layout.

As with so many historic buildings in Glasgow, when it came time to upgrade their electrical wiring and lighting system, they turned to HF and our electricians for our expertise in dealing with historic building electrical work.

We were tasked with upgrading electrical wiring and lighting in the Grand Hall, Saloon, Stairwell and Entrance Hall while completing complete general electrical work throughout the building.

The Grand Hall is the jewel in the crown of Trades Hall. Our electrical work included the illumination of the frieze above picture rails around the walls of the whole perimeter of the hall using LED tape lighting that was discreetly hidden yet provided a powerful lighting statement.
In the central cupola dome, we completed led lighting and illumination for the 14 crests that proudly sit around the inner perimeter of the cupola dome using micro LED pin spots fixed to a barrel strap that was secured to the existing chandelier.

In the Saloon, we installed an outreach projector spot light to back light over the 6 Coat of Arms. This created a stunning visual feature for the room.

In the stairwell, we installed LED lighting around the perimeter of the Atrium and illuminated the ‘Tree Plaque’ feature above the entrance doors to the Grand Hall.Ā Ā To complete the stairwell upgrade work, we designed, manufactured and installed 2 bespoke 400mm brass banded globe lights with finials to the bannisters at mid level.

In the Entrance Hall, we installed LED tape up lighting in the high level trough and replaced the 3 central lights with Georgian bell jar lanterns that better kept with the heritage of the buildings architecture.

All of the lighting systems in the Grand Hall and Saloon were connected through a multi channel programmable dimming system that allowed the lighting to be controlled both automatically and manually.

Project Challenges:Ā As with any electrical work in a historic listed building, care and precision were required in equal measure.Ā  With decades of experience dealing with electrical installations in historic buildings, we are very experienced in this type of electrical work and the project was completed without any issues.Ā  The main challenge we found in this project was coming up with the best solution to lighting problems.Ā  We are particularly proud of the led lighting work we completed for the Cupola Dome in the Grand Hall.Ā  Our electricians were able to think outside of the box to come up with a lighting solution that over delivered on our clients expectations yet was well hidden and did not detract from the aesthetic of the beautiful original features of the buildings interior.

NB: Following the successful electrical installation work completed on this project, we returned a year later to complete the full rewiring, lighting design and electrical installation of The Robert Adam Room in the building.

Brief project description: Our Mechanical & Electrical team were delighted to work alongside IZON Projects to carryout the electrical installation for the new Scottish Building Society branch that is now open on Frederick Street in Edinburgh.

We also completed the data installation, supplied and installed a new electric heating system for the entire branch. The final electrical work included the wiring for new intruder alarms and CCTV system that was due to be fitted.

On the Mechanical side, we fitted a new intake and extract ventilation system for the two newly formed offices.

Project Challenges: The electrical wiring had to be handled with care as we were installing the new cabling into existing walls and ceilings of the buildings ground and basement levels. Working alongside the IZON Projects team of joiners and decorators, the project ran smoothly throughout and we were able to complete the commercial electrical installation work and ventilation work without any problems.

Project Challenges:

The main challenge that we had to deal with during this project was the building itself.Ā  The new Gaucho Restaurant is sited in a Grade 2 listed building on Market Street right in the heart of Newcastle Town Centre.Ā  As with any historical listed building, there were many obstacles to overcome when we began stripping out old electrical wiring and fittings that had been used by previous tenants of the property.Ā  However with such a rich history in electrical installations both in the Hospitality & Tourism sector and on buildings of this vintage, our invaluable experience allowed us to complete the project to specification, on time and to the highest of standards.
